Gudi Padwa 2018 festival, will mark the beginning of New Year for the people of Maharashtra.
In South India festival is also celebrated in the form of Ugadi mostly in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states of India.

In terms of Marathi Vedic calendar or panchang ,Gudi Padwa will be celebrated in Maharashtra on 18/03/2018.

Gudi Padwa the name itself signifies Sanskrit name, which also means Chaitra Shukla Pratipada or Chaitra Shukla Paksha.

The festival is celebrated in the month of March (lunar month) or first day of Chaitra month which also signifies Vikram Samvat, the beginning of New Year.

The word padwa has its own significance which means first day of bright moon in terms of Vedic calendar. It marks the end of winter season and start of summer harvest season.

As per traditional beliefs and according to vedic puranas Lord Brahma created the universe on this auspicious day.

Gudi Padwa Celebrations

  1. Prepare rangoli at the entrance of main door of house.
  2. Prepare toran ring with flowers and mango leaves and hang outside entrance door.
  3. Prepare ‘Gudi’ with copper pot vessel inverted with clean colorful cloth (sari), garland of flowers decorated with sugar crystals on top and worship the same for 10 to 15 minutes with all family members.
  4. Chant the mantra of Lord Brahma
  5. Host the ‘Gudi’ with wooden bamboo stick outside the main door or terrace of your house at right corner.
  6. You should distribute the bhog or prasad among the family members
  7. The pooja is completed when you drink water from the inverted cooper vessel pot next day.
