Angarak yoga: Mars with Rahu, and the March 2026 conjunction

Angarak yoga is the name given to Mars and Rahu occupying the same sign. Angarak is one of the old names of Mars, meaning the burning coal, and the yoga takes its name from that heat. During 2026 the two were together in Aquarius from the twenty-third of February to the second of April, and the meeting was exact on the thirteenth of March, near fourteen degrees of the sign, with the fourteenth still close.

Those dates are past now. The reason to write about them properly is that a great deal was published in advance about what they would do to people, most of it frightening and almost none of it defensible. What a transit like this actually is, and what it is not, is worth setting out for the next time it comes around.

What Mars with Rahu is read as

Mars is initiative, heat, the willingness to act before consensus arrives. Rahu takes whatever it sits with and pushes it past its normal limits, in an unconventional direction, without the sense of proportion the planet would have on its own.

Together the tradition reads them as force with the brakes off. In a person's chart that shows two ways at once. There is impatience, a temper that arrives faster than the thought behind it, quarrels that escalate further than the matter warranted, and carelessness at speed. There is also unusual drive, a tolerance for risk that other people find alarming, and the ability to do hard, physical, dangerous or unconventional work for years without complaint. Surgeons, engineers, people who work with machinery, fire, land or armed services, and a great many people who built something on their own from nothing, carry this combination.

It is not a curse and it is not a gift. It is a strong instrument that cuts in whichever direction it is pointed.

The confusion with Mangal dosha

In parts of India, Angarak dosha is used as another name for Mangal dosha, the placement of Mars in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house, which is looked at when charts are matched for marriage. Several traditions in use in India count the second house as well, so the list you are given may be five houses or six depending on who is reading. That is worth asking about too, because it decides whether the same chart is called Mangal or not.

That is a different subject. Angarak yoga means Mars sitting with Rahu. Mangal dosha means Mars sitting in one of those five houses, with or without Rahu anywhere near it. If someone has told you that you have Angarak, it is worth asking which of the two they meant, because the readings and the remedies attached to them are not the same.

A transit is not a personal event

This is the part that matters most and gets said least.

When Mars and Rahu meet in the sky, every living person is under the same conjunction at the same moment. Whatever is written about accidents, disputes and losses is being written about the entire population at once, which is why it can be written so confidently and why it means so little.

What differs from person to person is where that sign falls in their own chart. Aquarius is the tenth house from a Taurus lagna, the seventh from a Leo lagna, the fourth from a Scorpio lagna, and so on. The transit touched work for one person, partnership for another, home for a third, and passed almost unnoticed for most. It also matters whether Mars or Rahu are doing anything of consequence in the birth chart to begin with. A transit activates what the chart already holds. It does not import something new.

So the honest reading of a period like March 2026 is narrow. It was a window in which haste cost more than usual, in which arguments were harder to step back from, and in which anything involving speed, sharp tools or heat deserved a little extra care. That advice is worth following. It is also worth keeping in proportion.

The dates, and the next one

By the sidereal positions this site computes, Mars entered Aquarius on 23 February 2026 and left it on 2 April 2026. Rahu held Aquarius across that whole stretch, moving slowly backwards, and did not leave the sign until the first week of December 2026. The conjunction was exact on 13 March near fourteen degrees of Aquarius, and the two stayed within about a degree of each other through the fourteenth. That is the peak the old pages were pointing at, and they had the days right.

By the same calculation, Mars and Rahu next come together on 7 January 2028, near nine degrees of Capricorn, and after that at the start of November 2029 in Sagittarius. Mars laps the zodiac in about two years and Rahu drifts slowly backwards, so the meeting comes round a little under every two years, each time in a different sign, which is what changes who it touches.

If you want to know which house Aquarius, or Capricorn in 2028, falls in for you, count from your own rising sign. The free kundli on this site will lay the houses out for you.

What tradition prescribes, and what plain sense says

For a difficult Mars period, the observances families keep are Tuesday-centred: Hanuman Chalisa, giving red lentils or jaggery, restraint in food and speech on that day. Where the family already keeps such a practice, keeping it more attentively through the window is reasonable and settles the mind, which is not a small thing.

I will not tell you a stone or a ritual removes a transit. What I have seen work, over twenty-five years of watching people through these windows, is duller and more reliable. Do not drive tired. Do not send the message the same evening you wrote it. Put a day between a provocation and your reply. Hold off on signing something that only makes sense if you move fast. None of that is superstition and none of it costs anything.

Questions people ask

Was March 2026 dangerous?

It was an ordinary transit window with a well-known signature. Mars and Rahu met in Aquarius, and the tradition reads that as a period where impatience carries a higher price. For most people nothing followed from it. For people whose own chart has Mars or Rahu placed prominently, or who have Aquarius on a sensitive house, it was a period worth handling carefully. Anyone who told you in advance what would happen to you personally was not reading your chart.

I have Mars and Rahu together in my birth chart. Should I be worried?

No, but it is worth understanding. In a birth chart the combination is permanent and it is part of how you are built, not an event waiting to happen. Which house it sits in, which houses Mars rules for your lagna, and whether other planets moderate it, decide what it means. Most people with this combination read as intense and driven rather than as unfortunate. The practical work is learning where your own haste costs you, which most people with it can name straight away.

Does Angarak yoga affect marriage?

Only through the same route anything else does, by where it sits. If the combination falls in the seventh house, or on the lord of the seventh, it is read in a marriage discussion. Otherwise it is not a marriage matter, and it should not be brought into a matching conversation just because the name sounds severe. The name Angarak sounds heavier than the combination usually is.

Angarak is one of a handful of conjunctions the tradition gave a name of its own, and yogas in a kundli sets out where such names sit among the larger families and why so few of them decide anything by themselves. If you want your own chart looked at rather than a general answer, a focused reading takes one question at a time.
