Famous people born under a nakshatra, and why most of those lists are guesses

Almost every list of celebrities born under a nakshatra that you will find online is unverifiable, and a good number of them are simply wrong. The reason is arithmetic, not scepticism: the Moon changes nakshatra roughly once a day, so a birth date without a birth time gives you two candidate nakshatras, not one.

I checked how often a date settles it. Over the fifty years from 1950 to 2000, the Moon crossed a nakshatra boundary at some point during the day on 96 days out of every 100. Only about four days in a hundred have a single nakshatra running from midnight to midnight. Which means that unless someone knows the person's birth time, the list they published is a coin toss dressed as a fact.

So here is the version I can stand behind. For each of the four nakshatras people ask about most, I have taken public figures whose birth date is a matter of public record, computed where the Moon was on that date, and given the window in Indian Standard Time during which the Moon was in that nakshatra. Born inside the window, the nakshatra holds. Born outside it, it does not. Every line can be checked against any ephemeris.

What I did and did not verify

The dates below are public record: they come from published biography, obituary and official record, the class of date that can be checked in a library rather than on an astrology site. If any one of them is wrong, the calculation built on it is wrong with it, and I would rather you know that than assume the table is beyond question.

The times, in almost every case, are not public record. Birth times for public figures circulate widely in astrological writing, and most of them trace back to somebody's guess, a rounded memory, or a rectification done backwards from the person's life. I have not treated any of them as established.

Positions are computed against the fixed stars using the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard used by the Indian national calendar. Another sidereal reckoning, Raman's for instance, sits about one and a half degrees away from Lahiri, and the Moon covers that in roughly two to three hours. So the windows below are close but not absolute, and near an edge a different reckoning can hand you a different answer.

Rohini

Rohini runs from 10 degrees to 23 degrees 20 minutes of Taurus. It is the Moon's own nakshatra, and tradition gives it the pleasantest reputation of the twenty seven: fertile, attractive, comfortable with material things, stubborn once settled.

Read the first two lines as the strong ones. Anyone born on 11 September 1895 after half past three in the morning has the Moon in Rohini, which is most of that day. The last two are close to even odds, and I would not repeat them as fact without a time.

Swati

Swati runs from 6 degrees 40 minutes to 20 degrees of Libra, entirely inside one sign. Rahu rules it, its deity is Vayu, the wind, and its old symbol is a young shoot bending in a breeze without breaking. Tradition reads it as independent, mobile, good at trade and at persuading people.

Amitabh Bachchan is the case people cite most. His birth time is usually given as late afternoon on 11 October 1942, which does fall inside the Swati window, so the attribution is probably right. It rests on a commonly repeated time rather than on a document, and it should be stated that way.

Uttara Phalguni

Uttara Phalguni straddles a sign boundary, from 26 degrees 40 minutes of Leo to 10 degrees of Virgo. The Sun rules it and its deity is Aryaman, associated with patronage, contracts and keeping one's word. Tradition reads it as steady, obligated, better at sustaining a thing than at starting it.

For Subhas Chandra Bose the birth time repeated in astrological writing is around midday in Cuttack, which sits inside the window. That time comes from tradition rather than from a record, so read it as likely rather than settled. The last two lines are the weak ones: both women would have to have been born in the early morning.

Mula

Mula runs from 0 to 13 degrees 20 minutes of Sagittarius. Ketu rules it, its name means root, and its symbol is a bundle of roots pulled up out of the ground.

Sri Aurobindo is the most solid case on any Mula list: the Moon held Mula until half past five that evening, and every birth time in circulation for him is a morning one.

Mula needs a word that the other three do not. Older texts attach warnings to it, and some families still hear that a child born in Mula is dangerous to the father or to the household. That fear, and the longer list of names, are taken up properly in famous people born in Mula nakshatra. The short version is this.

What the tradition actually holds is that Mula is a nakshatra of uprooting, of things being pulled out at the root so that something else can grow, and that its first quarter in particular was treated with care. It does not hold that a child is a curse. No classical text makes a single nakshatra placement the cause of a family's fortunes, and the texts that discuss Mula recommend care in the early years rather than pronouncing a verdict. If someone told you otherwise about your child, you were told something the texts do not support.

Why these lists get repeated anyway

Because they are easy to write and impossible for a reader to check. Nobody publishes the calculation, so nobody notices when the same actor appears under three different nakshatras on three different websites. Once you have the boundary times, you can check any such list in a minute, and most of them fail.

There is a second problem underneath the first. Even where the attribution is correct, the people in the tables above have very little in common beyond a Moon in the same thirteen degrees of sky. Reading backwards from a famous life to a placement always works, because you already know the answer you want, and it is the least reliable way to learn what a placement does.

Questions people ask

Can you tell me a celebrity's nakshatra if I give you their birth date?

I can tell you which one or two nakshatras it could be, and the hour at which it changes. Fixing it to one requires a birth time from a reliable source, which for most public figures does not exist.

Why do different websites give the same actor different nakshatras?

Usually because each site assumed a different time of day, or used a different ayanamsa, or copied a third site that had done one of those. The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so an assumption of morning rather than evening can move the answer by a whole nakshatra.

Does sharing a nakshatra with a famous person mean anything?

Only that your Moon and theirs occupied the same thirteen degree stretch of sky. Roughly one person in twenty seven shares any given nakshatra, which is about fifty million people in India. It is a starting point for a reading, not a forecast of a life.
