# Anuradha Nakshatra

*Nakshatra*

Anuradha (अनुराधा) is the 17th of the 27 nakshatras of Vedic astrology, spanning 213°20' - 226°40' of the zodiac in Vrishchika. Its lord is Shani and its deity Mitra. Symbol: Lotus / staff. It is of deva gana, deer yoni and madhya nadi, and its lord's Vimshottari dasha lasts 19 years.

## What is Anuradha nakshatra?

Anuradha is the 17th of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 213°20' to 226°40' of the zodiac, wholly inside Vrishchika. Its lord is Shani, its deity is Mitra, and its symbol is a lotus, in some lists a staff. The name means "after Radha": Vishakha, the nakshatra before it, was also called Radha.

Mitra is the Vedic god of friendship, agreements and the given word. The lotus growing out of mud is the image tradition pairs with him.

## Which rashi is Anuradha in, and who is its lord?

All four padas of Anuradha lie in Vrishchika, the fixed water sign ruled by Mangala, while the nakshatra itself is ruled by Shani. Its lord's Vimshottari dasha lasts 19 years. Shani rules three nakshatras spaced evenly round the zodiac: Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada.

A Moon in Anuradha at birth means life begins in the Shani dasha. You do not get all 19 years: the balance left depends on how far the Moon had already travelled through the nakshatra, so a Moon near 213°20' starts with almost the whole period and one near 226°40' with very little.

## What are the four padas of Anuradha?

A pada is a quarter of 3°20', and each falls in a navamsa, the ninth-part division used to judge how well a placement holds up and, in the D9 chart, marriage. The four padas fall in the navamsas of Simha, Kanya, Tula and Vrishchika. Anuradha does not cross a sign boundary, so all four sit in the Vrishchika rashi. In the fourth pada the navamsa is Vrishchika too, which the texts call vargottama and treat as steadier. Anuradha is not one of the gandamool nakshatras.

## What does tradition say about people born in Anuradha?

The texts describe Anuradha natives as loyal friends who bring people together round a shared aim, which follows from Mitra, and as able to keep going where others stop, which follows from Shani and the lotus. Tradition holds that they often do well away from their birthplace. The classical lists also mention a sharp tongue and some restlessness of feeling, since the Moon is not at ease in Vrishchika. Deva gana is said to add courtesy. These describe a temperament, not a forecast about anyone.

## Which careers are traditionally linked with Anuradha?

Tradition links Anuradha with work that rests on trust and organisation: running teams and institutions, diplomacy and liaison, partnerships and associations, and long, patient work in research or engineering where Shani's persistence counts. The 10th house and its lord decide the work, not the birth nakshatra.

## What does Anuradha mean for marriage and kundli matching?

Anuradha is of deva gana, deer yoni (female) and madhya nadi. In Ashtakoota matching nadi carries 8 points, gana 6 and yoni 4. Deva gana matches deva fully and is usually accepted with manushya; the classical concern is a deva and rakshasa pair. The deer yoni agrees best with deer, and Jyeshtha is its male counterpart. Two madhya nadi Moons score zero on nadi, the condition called nadi dosha, and the texts themselves list exceptions.

Matching scores the two Moons and nothing else. The marriage itself is read from the 7th house, its lord, Shukra and the dashas running in both charts.

## What does Anuradha not tell you?

Anuradha is one factor among hundreds. It says where the Moon was, not the ascendant, the houses or which grahas are strong. It also needs an accurate birth time: a Moon near 226°40' is a few hours from Jyeshtha, which has a different lord, gana and dasha. And the Shani dasha at birth, often described as a hard start, may have only a year or two left for a child born late in the nakshatra, after which the Budha dasha runs. Two people born in Anuradha can live very different lives, and I read it from the whole chart.
