# Ashwini Nakshatra

*Nakshatra*

Ashwini (अश्विनी) is the 1st of the 27 nakshatras of Vedic astrology, spanning 0°00' - 13°20' of the zodiac in Mesha. Its lord is Ketu and its deity Ashwini Kumaras. Symbol: Horse's head. It is of deva gana, horse yoni and aadi nadi, and its lord's Vimshottari dasha lasts 7 years.

## What is Ashwini nakshatra?

Ashwini is the 1st of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 0°00' to 13°20' of Mesha. Its lord is Ketu, its deity the Ashwini Kumaras, the twin physicians of the gods, and its symbol is a horse's head. The name comes from ashva, horse. It is identified with the two bright stars in the head of the Ram, Beta and Gamma Arietis, and it opens the whole zodiac: every sidereal longitude is counted from its first degree.

## Which rashi is Ashwini in, and who is its lord?

Ashwini lies wholly in Mesha, the sign of Mangala, but the nakshatra's own lord is Ketu, and its lord's Vimshottari dasha lasts 7 years. Ketu also rules Magha and Mula.

If the Moon was in Ashwini at birth, life begins in Ketu's dasha. How much of it is left depends on how far the Moon had travelled through the nakshatra: a Moon near the start leaves almost all seven years to run, a Moon near the end leaves only a few months.

## What are the four padas of Ashwini, and is it gandamool?

The four padas fall in the navamsas of Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna and Karka. The navamsa is the ninth-division chart (D9), where each pada becomes a sign of its own. All four padas sit in Mesha; the first is vargottama, Mesha in both charts.

Ashwini is one of the six gandamool nakshatras, and its gandanta zone is 0°00'-3°20', the seam where Meena, a water sign, ends and Mesha, a fire sign, begins. The classical concern is narrower than it is usually made out to be: it is about the junction itself, not about everyone with an Ashwini Moon, and it is one factor among many, never a verdict.

## What does tradition say about people born in Ashwini?

The texts describe Ashwini natives as quick, direct and drawn to beginnings. Varahamihira's verse calls them fond of adornment, good-looking, well liked, capable and intelligent. Tradition holds that the healing twins give an instinct to help fast, and the horse a dislike of waiting. Deva gana is said to bring a well-meaning temper, and Ketu a streak of detachment: someone who starts many things and is not held by any of them.

## Which careers are traditionally linked with Ashwini?

Tradition links Ashwini with medicine and healing, emergency and first-response work, riding, transport and vehicles, sport, and any work that rewards speed. These are associations, not a forecast. Work is read from the 10th house, its lord and the dashas running; the birth nakshatra only colours the style.

## What does Ashwini mean for marriage and kundli matching?

In Ashtakoota matching Ashwini counts as deva gana, horse yoni (male) and Aadi nadi. Deva gana agrees fully with deva, is accepted with manushya and scores lowest against rakshasa. Of the 36 points, nadi carries 8, gana 6 and yoni 4. Two Aadi nadi Moons is the classical concern, called nadi dosha, and the texts themselves give exceptions, for example when the two Moons share a rashi but not a nakshatra.

Matching only scores the two Moons. The marriage itself I read from the 7th house, its lord, Shukra and the dashas both people are running.

## Which syllables belong to Ashwini?

By tradition the four padas give Chu, Che, Cho and La, in order. A family uses the syllable of the Moon's pada as the first sound of a child's name.

## What does Ashwini not tell you?

It does not tell you where Ketu itself sits, how strong Mangala is as the sign lord, or which house Mesha falls in, and those decide far more. Two people with an Ashwini Moon born an hour apart can have different ascendants and read as different people. Even the gandamool question needs the Moon's exact degree, which needs an exact birth time. The nakshatra is one factor among hundreds, and I read it from the whole chart.
