Neech bhang raj yoga, and what actually cancels a debilitated planet

Neech bhang raj yoga means that a planet sitting in its weakest sign has been given support by something else in the chart, so the weakness does not read the way it otherwise would. The tradition says that when the cancellation is genuine, the same planet can end up giving strong results, sometimes stronger than an ordinary placement, because the person builds capacity in an area where they first met difficulty.

That is the whole idea. Everything else is the checking, which is where most free calculators fall down, because the classical conditions are not one rule but several, and the texts do not fully agree on them.

First, what debilitation is

Each planet has one sign where it is held to be at its weakest and the opposite sign where it is at its strongest. The pairs are fixed and do not depend on your chart.

The classical texts also give an exact degree in each sign where the weakness is deepest, and the strength falls away as the planet moves further from that degree. A planet at the far end of its weak sign is in a much softer position than one sitting on the exact degree. Calculators rarely make this distinction and it matters.

Rahu and Ketu are treated differently by different schools, and there is no settled classical position on their weak and strong signs. When someone tells you Rahu is debilitated in your chart, ask which authority they are following.

The conditions that are said to cancel it

Different texts list these differently, and I am setting out the ones that most classical writers agree on. Read them as conditions a careful astrologer checks, not as a checklist that produces a yes or a no.

The lord of that sign is in an angle. If a planet is weak in Libra, Venus rules Libra, so Venus is its host. If Venus sits in the first, fourth, seventh or tenth house counted from the lagna, or from the Moon, the weakness is held to be relieved. This is the condition most texts lead with.

The planet that would be strongest in that sign is in an angle. Saturn is strongest in Libra. So a planet weak in Libra is supported if Saturn occupies an angle from the lagna or the Moon.

The host looks at the weak planet, or sits with it. A planet weak in Libra that is joined by Venus, or looked at by Venus, is held to be supported directly.

The planet strongest in that sign looks at it. Same logic, from the other side.

The weak planet is itself in an angle from the lagna or the Moon. Some writers accept this alone. Others treat it as a supporting point rather than a cancellation in its own right.

The two planets exchange signs. If the weak planet and its host are sitting in each other's signs, the exchange is read as a strong relief, and several writers rate it the strongest form of all.

Beyond these, some traditions add that a weak planet moving retrograde is not really weak, and some hold that a weak planet is relieved when it is strong in the divisional charts. Both are real positions held by real authorities, and both are disputed. An honest reading tells you which one it is leaning on.

Confirming it in the divisional charts

The divisional charts are smaller charts worked out from the main one by cutting each sign into equal parts. The ninth division is the one traditionally used to test the underlying strength of a planet, and the tenth is used for work and standing.

The usual test is simple to state. Take the planet that is weak in the main chart and find where it lands in the ninth divisional chart. If it sits there in its own sign, or in its strongest sign, or with the same host that supports it in the main chart, the cancellation is held to be confirmed. If it is weak in both charts, it is not.

I use this test, but with a caution I want to be plain about. The divisional charts magnify the birth time. The rising sign of the ninth divisional chart changes roughly every thirteen minutes, and the tenth changes about as fast. If your birth time comes from family memory rather than from a written record, the ninth divisional chart is being built on an assumption, and confirming a cancellation from it is confirming your assumption back to you.

So the order I work in is this. Establish the cancellation, or fail to, from the main chart, where a few minutes either way changes nothing. Use the divisional chart to add weight to a conclusion you already have reason for. Do not let it create the conclusion.

Why the calculators disagree with each other

One accepts the weak planet's own presence in an angle as sufficient, another does not. One counts retrograde motion, another ignores it. A planet weak in Libra, supported by a Venus that is itself buried in the eighth house with difficult company, has been rescued by a rescuer who needs rescuing. That reading requires a person, not a rule.

What the cancellation actually indicates

Tradition holds that a cancelled debilitation gives results late rather than early, and after struggle rather than instead of it. The same writers hold that the area of life the weak planet governs is where a person is tested first and grows capable later. The texts that call it a raj yoga are pointing at the size of the eventual capacity, not promising a particular result.

What it does not indicate is a reversal of fortune on a date. The phrase is often heard as a promise that an outcome is owed, and that is not what the tradition claims. The chart shows what is available and roughly when the ground is more favourable. The work stays yours.

No. That is a common overstatement. The classical position is that the weakness is relieved and the planet becomes able to give its results, often with unusual force in the areas it rules. It does not acquire the qualities of its strongest sign. A relieved planet still carries the history of where it sits.
