Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga, when a weak planet is said to recover
Neecha bhanga means the cancellation of debilitation. When a planet sits in the sign where it is weakest, and certain supporting conditions are present elsewhere in the chart, tradition holds that the weakness is lifted and the planet is able to act after all. Where that lift is strong, the older texts attach the words raja yoga to it, meaning a rise in position.
The two things worth fixing in your mind before anything else: the debilitation is said to be lifted, not turned into strength, and the classical conditions are not agreed on between texts. Both of those get flattened in most of what is written about this, and both change how much weight the finding deserves.
Which placement counts as debilitated
Each planet has one sign in which it is held to be at its weakest, and one opposite it in which it is strongest.
The Sun is weak in Libra and strong in Aries. The Moon is weak in Scorpio and strong in Taurus. Mars is weak in Cancer and strong in Capricorn. Mercury is weak in Pisces and strong in Virgo. Jupiter is weak in Capricorn and strong in Cancer. Venus is weak in Virgo and strong in Pisces. Saturn is weak in Aries and strong in Libra. For Rahu and Ketu the texts do not agree, and I would not build anything on a claimed debilitation of theirs.
Debilitation on its own is common. Any given planet is in its weak sign in about one chart in twelve, and with seven planets in play, debilitation turns up in roughly half of all charts. It is an ordinary feature of an ordinary chart, not a misfortune.
The conditions under which it is said to lift
Here are the ones the classical material actually gives, and I am listing them separately because they are not equal in weight.
The lord of the sign is well placed. If the planet that owns the sign of debilitation sits in a kendra, the first, fourth, seventh or tenth house, from the ascendant or from the Moon. Mars in Cancer is the standard example: Cancer is the Moon's sign, so a Moon placed in a kendra is held to lift Mars.
The planet that would be exalted there is well placed. The sign in which one planet is weakest is where another is strongest. If that other planet sits in a kendra from the ascendant or the Moon, the same lifting is described. Saturn is strongest in Libra, so a strong, well placed Saturn is held to lift a Sun that is debilitated in Libra.
A direct connection between them. The debilitated planet joined with, or aspected by, the lord of that sign or the planet exalted in it.
An exchange. The debilitated planet and the lord of its sign sitting in each other's signs.
Later commentaries add more conditions, and the list has grown over the centuries rather than stayed fixed. That growth is the practical problem with the whole subject. When enough conditions are admitted, almost any debilitated planet in almost any chart can be shown to qualify, which is exactly what a good deal of astrology software does. If a report tells you that you have neecha bhanga raja yoga, the useful next question is which condition, and how strong the planet doing the lifting actually is.
What it is said to produce
The traditional description is not of an easy ascent. It is of a rise that arrives after difficulty, in a life where the early part is harder than the later part, and where the person makes something out of a position that did not look promising. The planet involved tells you the area. A lifted Mercury is described through communication, trade and learning. A lifted Saturn through endurance, labour and structures that take years.
Notice that the shape of the description is the shape of the mechanism. Something was weak. Something else held it up. The result the texts describe is competence recovered late, not competence granted freely.
The honest statement is the same one every time: it indicates a leaning, not an outcome. A chart cannot tell you that a rise will happen. It can tell you that the difficulty in one area has a support behind it, and that the support tends to show in the mahadasha of the planets concerned, which is where the timing conversation begins.
Three corrections worth making
Lifted is not exalted. A debilitated planet whose weakness is cancelled is not thereby the strongest planet in your chart. It is a planet that can now do its work. Pages that describe neecha bhanga as making the planet more powerful than an exalted one are quoting an enthusiastic commentary, not the mainstream position.
A planet in its own sign, or in its sign of exaltation, is not debilitated to begin with. Saturn owns Capricorn and Aquarius and is exalted in Libra, so a Saturn in any of those three signs is not weak and there is nothing to cancel. This confusion turns up constantly, and it comes from muddling the one sign in which a planet is held to be weakest with the signs in which it is at home.
A benefic sitting alongside is not automatically a cancellation. Jupiter in the same house as a debilitated planet may soften matters, and it counts under the connection condition only where Jupiter is the sign lord or the exaltation lord of that sign. Otherwise it is a helpful influence, described in its own terms, rather than the technical cancellation.
Where it sits among the other combinations
Neecha bhanga belongs to the wider family of raja yogas, and like the rest of them it is one line in a chart and not the chart. It is read against the ascendant, the strength of the other planets, and the periods running, and the answer that matters is what those together indicate for the years in front of you. That is what a reading is for.
Questions people ask
Is neecha bhanga raja yoga rare?
The genuine, well supported version is uncommon. The version software reports is not, because the accumulated list of qualifying conditions is loose enough to catch a great many charts. Ask which condition is being claimed and how strong the planet said to be doing the lifting is.
Does neecha bhanga mean the difficulty goes away?
Tradition describes it as a difficulty that is worked through rather than one that never arrives. The common picture is a harder early stretch, a slow build, and a position reached later than expected. It indicates a pattern rather than a promise.
Which planet's debilitation matters most in my chart?
Usually the one that owns or occupies a house central to your question, and the one whose period is running or approaching. A debilitated planet governing a corner of life you rarely think about matters far less than one governing work or marriage when its period is due.
