Rahu in the seventh house, and what it says about partnership
Rahu in the seventh house of a kundli is traditionally read as a pull away from the ordinary script for partnership. The tradition associates it with a strong pull toward someone unfamiliar, a marriage that crosses a line the family did not expect, and a habit of seeing a partner through an amplified picture before seeing them plainly. It is not a mark of divorce, and it does not mean marriage is denied.
That last sentence is the reason I am writing this. Most of what circulates online about this placement is written to alarm. People arrive at a consultation already convinced their marriage is doomed because a website told them so. Rahu occupies one house out of twelve, so roughly one chart in twelve carries it in the seventh, and the marriages in that set run the same range as any other set of marriages: long and settled, ended, begun later than the family expected. A feature that common cannot carry a single fate. The placement describes a tendency. It does not hand down a verdict.
The seventh house, in plain words
The seventh house is the house of union. It covers marriage and the life partner, but it also covers business partners, contracts, and how you meet the person across from you generally. It sits opposite the first house, which is you. That opposition is the whole idea: the seventh describes what you are drawn to because it is not already yours.
When astrologers talk about the marriage chart, they mean a finer chart drawn from the same birth details that is read alongside the main kundli for partnership questions. The reading of Rahu in the seventh of that chart runs along the same lines as what follows here, with the finer chart usually treated as the more specific of the two. The reading below holds either way.
What Rahu adds
Rahu is the amplifier. Wherever it sits, it enlarges appetite and blurs judgement in the same motion. It is associated with the foreign, the unconventional, the thing outside your own circle, and with a hunger that is difficult to satisfy because the wanting itself is part of the point.
Put that in the house of union and you get the classic description: attraction to a partner who is different from you and from your family, an intensity in the early phase that can outrun what either person actually knows about the other, and a later stage where, tradition holds, the real person has to be met once the amplified picture fades.
What the placement is traditionally held to indicate
Read carefully, the tradition says roughly this.
Partnership across a boundary. A different community, language, region, religion, age gap, or a partner met far from home. In earlier centuries that was remarkable. In an India where people work in other cities and meet online, it is ordinary, which is one reason the old alarmed readings age badly.
A strong first pull. The attraction tends to arrive fast and feel significant. Tradition treats this as the placement's real risk, not because the attraction is false, but because decisions made inside it can be made quickly.
A gap between the image and the person. Rahu is associated with the projected picture. The work of the placement, as the tradition frames it, is coming to know the actual partner and staying interested in them.
Restlessness with the conventional. Tradition associates the placement with restlessness inside a match assembled purely on paper, and with deeper commitment to a partnership the person chose themselves.
Where Ketu sits opposite, in the first house, the tradition adds a second theme: a person who is somewhat detached from their own image and finds their sense of self through the other. Venus in the chart, being the significator for marriage and pleasure, changes the tone considerably depending on where it sits and what aspects it takes.
Birth placement and transit are two different questions
This is the confusion I correct most often, and searches about a particular year are usually this confusion in disguise.
Rahu in your birth chart never moves. It is a lifelong feature of how you approach partnership. Rahu in transit is where Rahu is in the sky now, and it passes through every house of your chart in turn. It spends roughly eighteen months in a sign and takes a little over eighteen years to complete a circuit, which is why people notice its passage through the seventh house once, sometimes twice, in a lifetime.
Which house Rahu is transiting for you depends on your own rashi, so a headline about what Rahu does in a given year is meaningless without your chart in front of it. I am not going to print a table of dates here for that reason. Any panchang will tell you where the planets actually are on a given day, but where they fall in your houses needs your birth details, so bring those and we will look at them.
A transit through the seventh is generally read as a period that stirs the partnership area: new attraction, renewed negotiation inside an existing marriage, restlessness. It is a season, not a sentence, and it ends.
What it does not mean
Let me be blunt about the claims that get attached to this placement online.
It does not mean you will be betrayed. It does not mean divorce. It does not mean your spouse will deceive you, or that you must not marry until some ritual is performed. Any page that tells you a single placement produces a fixed outcome is selling you the remedy on the next line.
It also does not mean the opposite. I cannot tell you that everything will be fine. What a chart offers is a description of the pattern you are working with, and some sense of when the pressure in that area rises and falls. What you do inside the pattern is yours.
The same placement, very different lives
Two people can share this placement and live nothing alike. What separates them, in the chart, is everything around it: the condition of Venus, whether Jupiter looks at the seventh house, the strength of the chart's ruling planet, the planetary period running now, the mahadasha, and the seventh house from the Moon as well as from the ascendant. Outside the chart, it is separated by the ordinary things, whether the couple can talk honestly, whether either has been married before, what the families do.
That is why a one line internet reading is worth so little, and why I will not give a partnership reading without the birth time. If your birth time is uncertain, say so at the start. It matters more for this question than for almost any other, because the seventh house can shift entirely with a change of twenty minutes.
What I actually look at
For a marriage question with this placement in the chart, I read the seventh house and its ruler, Venus and Jupiter, the same houses seen from the Moon, and then the timing: which mahadasha is running and what the coming years activate. Where a partner's chart is available, I look at Guna Milan and, more usefully, at whether the two charts stress the same areas at the same time.
That is the whole method, and it produces a description with dates attached, not a prophecy. If you want that done properly on your own chart, the readings I write are where to start. If numbers rather than planets are what brought you here, I have written separately about what numerology can and cannot say about a future partner.
Common questions
Does Rahu in the seventh house delay marriage?
Sometimes, and not because of Rahu alone. Tradition associates the placement with a person who does not settle for a conventional match, which in practice can mean marrying later than the family expected. Saturn's involvement with the seventh house is the more usual indication behind an actual delay. A chart can suggest that timing is not yet ripe, but no chart can name the month you will marry.
Is an inter-caste or foreign marriage certain with this placement?
No. It is one of the classical associations, not a rule. Plenty of people with this placement marry inside their own community, and plenty without it marry outside. The steadier reading is that the partnership will feel unconventional to the family in some way, and that way is not always about community.
Do the remedies sold for this placement work?
I do not sell remedies for a placement. Tradition prescribes practices for Rahu, and people find real steadiness in them, but a practice is not a mechanism for producing a spouse, and any promise of that kind is a commercial claim, not an astrological one. If you want something practical, spend the money on understanding the chart properly and take the decision yourself.
