Raj yoga in a kundli, and what neech bhang actually cancels

A raj yoga is formed when the lord of a kendra house and the lord of a trikona house come into a working relationship in the kundli. The kendras are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses. The trikonas are the first, fifth and ninth. When the rulers of one group connect with the rulers of the other, tradition reads it as an indication of rise in standing, responsibility and recognition.

Neech bhang raj yoga is a different rule that gets bundled in with it. It applies to a planet sitting in the sign where it is weakest, and it describes the conditions under which that weakness is held to be lifted. The two are worth separating, because people arrive at a reading having been told they have one when they have the other, or that they have both when the chart shows something quieter.

What counts as a relationship

Four kinds of connection are read as making the yoga:

• The two lords sit together in the same house.
• They look at each other. In the tradition every planet aspects the seventh house from itself, and Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have additional aspects of their own.
• They exchange signs, each one occupying the sign the other rules.
• One of them sits in a house ruled by the other.

The lagna lord belongs to both groups at once, since the first house is a kendra and a trikona together. That is why so many charts show at least one such connection. Of all the pairings, the one the texts hold highest is the ninth lord with the tenth lord: fortune joined to action, the thing a person believes joined to the work they actually do.

The part that is usually left out

Almost every chart has a raj yoga of some kind. Four kendras and three trikonas, with the first house counted in both, produce so many possible pairings that a connection of some sort turns up in most charts I look at. If a website tells you that you have three raj yogas, it is probably telling the truth and it is telling you very little.

Three questions decide whether a raj yoga means anything in a life.

Are the two planets actually in good condition? A yoga made by two afflicted planets, one of them combust and the other debilitated, is a promise written on paper with no money behind it.

Does the same planet also rule a difficult house? A planet rarely rules only one house. If your kendra lord also rules the sixth or the twelfth, whatever it gives it also complicates. This is ordinary in charts and it is the main reason a strong-looking yoga produces a mixed life.

Does its period run when it can be used? A yoga expresses through the mahadasha of the planets that form it. If those periods fall between the ages of two and eighteen, the same combination shows up as a good school and an easy childhood rather than as a career. I have seen more disappointment come from ignoring this than from any other single thing.

There is also a separate family called viparita raj yoga, formed when the lords of the sixth, eighth and twelfth houses relate among themselves. Tradition reads it as rise that comes through reversal, through the failure of an opponent or the collapse of a situation the person was stuck in. It is not the same thing as a kendra-trikona yoga and should not be counted as one.

Neech bhang: what debilitation is first

Every planet has one sign where it is held to be at its weakest. That is the neecha sign, and the list is fixed:

Rahu and Ketu are not agreed on across the texts, so I leave them out of this.

Debilitation is not damage to the person. It describes a planet that has to work in conditions that do not suit it. Mars in Cancer still acts, but it acts through feeling and protection rather than through direct force. Read that way, a debilitated planet is often the most interesting thing in a chart.

The conditions that cancel it

The classical texts give a set of conditions, any one of which is held to lift the debilitation. The common ones:

• The lord of the sign the planet is sitting in occupies a kendra, counted from the lagna or from the Moon. For a debilitated Sun in Libra, that lord is Venus.
• The planet that would be exalted in that same sign occupies a kendra from the lagna or the Moon. For Libra, that is Saturn.
• The debilitated planet is joined with, or aspected by, either of those two planets.
• The debilitated planet itself sits in a kendra, with a strong lagna lord.

Some texts add that a debilitated planet which is retrograde behaves differently, and there is genuine disagreement about that one. Where the texts disagree I say so rather than pick a side.

When the condition is met, the tradition calls it neech bhang, and where the planet also carries a kendra or trikona lordship the combination is named a raj yoga. The reading attached to it is specific: a person who struggles early in the matters that planet governs and comes into their own later, often past the middle of life, and often in a field connected to the very thing that was difficult.

What it is not is a promise of wealth or standing. A cancelled debilitation means the planet is not as damaged as the placement first suggested. That is a correction, not a windfall.

Working it out from your own lagna

Debilitation is fixed by sign, so the house it falls in depends on your lagna. Count from your rising sign to the sign in the table and you have the house.

Seven of the twelve lagnas carry a debilitation in the first house itself: Aries lagna has Saturn in Aries, Cancer has Mars in Cancer, Virgo has Venus in Virgo, Libra has the Sun in Libra, Scorpio has the Moon in Scorpio, Capricorn has Jupiter in Capricorn, and Pisces has Mercury in Pisces. Whether the planet is actually there in your chart is another matter, and that is what you check.

For Taurus lagna the Moon's weak sign, Scorpio, falls in the seventh. For Gemini, Jupiter's weak sign, Capricorn, falls in the eighth. For Leo, the Sun's own weak sign falls in the third. Working out the house is arithmetic. Working out whether the cancellation applies needs the whole chart, because it turns on where two other planets are sitting.

Questions people ask

Does a raj yoga mean I will become rich or powerful?

No. It is an indication of capacity for rise, not a forecast of one. Whether it shows up in a life depends on the condition of the planets, what else they rule, and whether their periods run during working years. A chart shows what is supported. What is built on it is the person's own work.

Is neech bhang raj yoga rare?

It is not rare. Debilitations are common, and the cancellation conditions are broad enough that many of them qualify in some form. What is uncommon is a debilitation cancelled cleanly, in a chart where that planet also rules something important. That combination is worth noting. A single condition met on a minor planet is not.

I was told I have five raj yogas. Should I expect something?

Expect the count to be real and the meaning to be thin. Counting yogas is easy, which is why software does it. Ask instead which planets form them, what condition those planets are in, what else they rule, and when their periods run. If the person who gave you the count cannot answer those four questions, the count is not worth much.
