Vaidhriti yoga in the panchang, and what it does not mean
Also in: हिन्दी
People find me after they have read something about Vaidhriti and gone quiet. Usually it is a wedding date that a relative has objected to, or a birth certificate someone has looked up in a panchang, and the reading they found online was written to frighten them. So let me put it plainly, the way I would across a table.
What Vaidhriti actually is
Open the panchang for any day and you will find five entries. The tithi, the day, the nakshatra, the yoga, and the karana. The fourth of those, the yoga, is not a talent or a blessing. It is arithmetic.
Take where the Sun stands along the zodiac and where the Moon stands, add the two together, and divide the total into twenty seven equal parts. Whichever part the sum falls in gives the day its yoga. Vishkambha is the first. Vaidhriti is the twenty seventh and last.
That is the whole of it. It is a measure of how far the Sun and the Moon have drawn apart since they were last together, nothing more mysterious than that. It moves on its own schedule, roughly one every day, and it comes round every few weeks for everybody on earth at once.
Why tradition marks it
Four of the twenty seven are set aside in the older texts as unsuitable for beginning things: Vyatipata, Parigha, Vaidhriti and Vishkambha, with the first three treated most carefully. The advice attached to them is narrow and it is worth reading exactly as it is written.
It says: do not begin. Do not fix the wedding here, do not lay the foundation here, do not open the shop here, do not sign here if you can sign a day later.
It does not say the day is cursed. It does not say a person born on it is marked. Choosing a good moment to begin something and reading the chart of a person already born are two different pieces of work, and the rules of the first do not transfer to the second. Almost everything frightening written about Vaidhriti online comes from that one substitution.
Being born under it
Roughly one person in twenty seven is born under Vaidhriti. That is a little over two hundred and fifty thousand people a day. Whatever it is, it is not rare, and it cannot be doing anything dramatic on its own.
The classical descriptions attached to it are temperamental rather than predictive: a mind that runs at two speeds, strong feeling that arrives before the reason for it does, a stubbornness that is useful in the right work and expensive in the wrong one. That reading follows from the arithmetic. The yoga is the Sun and the Moon measured against each other, and the Sun and the Moon are the two things in a chart that most describe how a person holds themselves together.
But it is one line in a chart with a few hundred lines in it. The rising sign, where the Moon sits, which houses the planets fall in, what is running now: all of it weighs more. I have read charts for people born under Vaidhriti who are the steadiest people I know, because the rest of the chart said so. If someone tells you your birth yoga explains your life, they have not looked at your chart.
What I would actually do with it
If you are picking a date. Take the objection seriously and move the date. Not because the day is dangerous, but because a wedding at which one side of the family is uneasy is worse than a wedding a week later. The tradition is cheap to follow here and there is no reason to fight it.
If you were born under it. Do nothing. There is no remedy for a birth yoga, because there is nothing to remedy. If something in your life is genuinely stuck, the answer is in the chart as a whole and in the period you are running, and that is a reading, not a line in a panchang.
The same substitution happens with the karana. If somebody has told you that being born in Vishti, or Bhadra, marks a person, that is the day rule moved onto a birth again.
If you are afraid because of something you read. Notice what the page was selling. A gemstone, a puja, a subscription. Fear is the easiest thing to sell in this field and it is the reason so many people arrive at astrology once and never come back.
The honest summary
Vaidhriti is the twenty seventh yoga. It is the Sun and the Moon, added and divided. Tradition asks you not to start something new under it, and that is worth respecting when you have the choice. It is not a verdict on anyone's birth, and no one can tell you what it means for you without looking at your whole chart.
If you want to know what your panchang actually said on the day you were born, the free kundli on this site will compute it for you, and you can read the line yourself.
