# Vish yoga in astrology, the Moon with Saturn, read plainly

> Vish yoga is the name popular astrology gives to the Moon joined with Saturn. Tradition reads a heavy mind and delayed comfort, not poison in a life.

Vish yoga is the name popular astrology gives to the Moon and Saturn sitting
together in the same sign of a chart, and in some traditions to the two of them
in mutual aspect as well. The word vish means poison, and that name is doing far
more work than the reading behind it deserves.

What the tradition actually describes is a mind that carries weight. Saturn is
restraint, delay, duty and time. The Moon is the mind, the feelings and the early
home. Where the two sit together, the tradition describes a temperament that is
serious early, slow to be satisfied, and inclined to expect the difficulty
before it arrives. That is the reading. It is not a curse and it is not a
diagnosis.

## What forms it

The Moon and Saturn in the same sign. That is the version almost everyone means.
Some astrologers count the two in mutual aspect, and some regional traditions
use the name Punarphoo for the same pairing with a somewhat different emphasis,
mostly around delay in marriage and in settling.

Two things change the reading immediately, and any astrologer will look at them
before saying anything else. The first is how close the two planets are by
degree. A gap of two degrees is a different matter from a gap of twenty, even
though both count as the same sign. The second is which house the pairing falls
in, because that is the area of life the combination actually describes. The same
conjunction in the 4th house and in the 11th are not the same statement.

## Why the pairing is read as heavy

Take the two planets on their own terms.

The Moon in Vedic astrology is not romance. It is the mind: how a person takes in
the world, how quickly they recover, how much comfort they need. It also carries
the mother and the early years at home.

Saturn is the planet of limits. It slows things, it asks for proof, it withholds
until the work is done. Nothing about Saturn is malicious in the texts; it is
simply the principle that things take time and cost effort.

Tradition reads a mind under Saturn as one that had to mature early. It
associates the combination with a childhood in which comfort was short
or affection was rationed, with a habit of holding back, with loneliness in
company, and with satisfaction that arrives later than it does for other people.
It also associates it, and this half is left out of most of what you will read,
with endurance. People with this pairing tend to be able to work at one thing for
years without applause. That is not a small thing to be given.

## What softens it

The classical conditions, and they are conditions rather than guarantees:

- Jupiter aspecting the pair. This is the one every tradition agrees on. Jupiter
is read as restoring faith and easing the weight.
- The Moon strong in itself, meaning near full rather than near new, and in a
  sign it is comfortable in.
- Saturn in a sign it owns or is exalted in, which is Capricorn, Aquarius or
Libra. A Saturn at home is a Saturn doing its own work rather than fighting.
- A wide separation by degree, or the two planets in different houses despite
  sharing a sign.
- A well-placed lord of the house the pairing falls in.

Where several of these hold, the combination reads mostly as a serious
temperament, and I would not raise it at all in a reading unless the person
brought it up.

## What it is not

It is not a prediction of mental illness. I want to be direct about this because
the fear is common and the internet feeds it. A chart indicates a tendency of
temperament. If you are genuinely struggling, see a doctor, and do that first.
No astrologer should be your only counsel on that and no honest one will want to
be.

It is not a marriage blocker either, though that claim is everywhere. The
tradition holds that delay in settling is a common theme with this pairing,
particularly where it touches the 7th house. Delay is not denial, and marriage
timing is read from several indications together rather than one.

And the name is later than the reading. The classical descriptions of Saturn
with the Moon do not use it. The dramatic label came afterwards, and it has
frightened more people than it has informed.

## Three different things called vish

This is worth untangling, because the searches for all three land in the same
place.

**Vish yoga in a birth chart** is the Moon with Saturn.

**Vishkumbha** is the first of the twenty seven daily yogas listed in the
panchang. It is a feature of the day, not of your chart, and it is used when
choosing a time to begin something. It is unrelated to the Moon and Saturn in
your kundli despite the shared syllable.

**Vish ghati**, sometimes written visha ghatika, is a short inauspicious segment
of the day tied to the running nakshatra, used in the same way when picking a
muhurta. Also a feature of the day, also unrelated.

If someone quoted vish yoga at you from a daily panchang, they were talking about
the second or the third of these.

## What tradition prescribes

Saturday observances, feeding and serving the old and the poor, and care shown to
one's mother are what the tradition offers here, and the Hanuman Chalisa is the
common recitation. I will say what I say about all of it: these are practices of
attention and discipline, they suit a Saturn reading because Saturn responds to
consistency, and none of them is a switch that turns a combination off. Anyone
selling you a stone or a ritual that removes vish yoga is selling you the fear,
not the fix.

If you want to know what this pairing is actually doing in your own chart, which
house it sits in, how close it is, and what else is aspecting it, a
[reading](/services) will tell you that in plain terms. The related piece on
[raja yoga in a kundli](/learn/raja-yoga-in-kundli) explains how a single named
combination is weighed against the rest of a chart, which is the habit worth
having with all of these.

## Questions people ask

**Is vish yoga in my chart a serious problem?**

Usually not on its own. Its weight depends on how close the two planets are, the
house they fall in, the condition of the Moon, and whether Jupiter aspects them.
In a great many charts it describes a serious, patient temperament and nothing
more dramatic than that.

**Does vish yoga delay marriage?**

Tradition associates the pairing with delay in settling, especially where it
involves the 7th house, and delay is not the same as denial. Marriage timing is
judged from several indications at once, so no single combination should be read
as the answer.

**How long does vish yoga last?**

It does not come and go; a conjunction in a birth chart is there for life. What
changes is when it is prominent, which is chiefly during the long planetary
periods of Saturn and of the Moon. Outside those years, most people notice it far
less.
