Raj yoga in the kundli, and why a date of birth alone cannot find it
Raj yoga is not a single thing you either have or do not have. It is a name for a family of combinations in the kundli where the lord of a supporting house and the lord of an angular house come together, and tradition holds that such a pairing raises a person's standing, work and circumstances. And a date of birth alone cannot find it. The houses of a chart are fixed by the moment the horizon cut the zodiac at your birth, so without a time and a place there are no houses, and without houses there are no house lords to pair.
That is the honest answer to the question most people are really asking when they look for a raj yoga calculator by date of birth. Any tool that gives you a result from a date alone is telling you about planet positions in signs, which is a real thing, but it is not raj yoga.
What the combination actually is
The twelve houses of a kundli are divided, for this purpose, into two groups.
The angles are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses. They carry the visible, structural part of life: the self and body, home and inner ground, partnership, and public work.
The supporting houses are the first, fifth and ninth. They carry merit, intelligence, the fruits of past effort, and fortune in the older sense of the word.
A raj yoga forms when the lord of an angle and the lord of a supporting house connect. The classical ways of connecting are four, and they are not equal in strength.
They may sit together in one house. They may look at each other across the chart. They may exchange places, each sitting in the other's sign. Or one may sit in the other's house. The first three are read as stronger than the last.
The first house belongs to both groups, which is why the lagna lord turns up in so many of these combinations, and why almost every chart has some raj yoga in it somewhere. That fact alone should tell you how much weight to put on the phrase.
Why almost every chart has one
There are four angles and three supporting houses, and one house is counted in both. In an ordinary chart, some pair of those lords will end up in the same house, or facing each other, simply by arithmetic. This is why the internet is full of people who have been told they have a raj yoga and are still waiting for it to mean something.
The presence of the combination is the beginning of the reading, not the end of it. What decides whether it carries any weight is a set of plainer questions.
Are the two lords in reasonable condition, or is one of them weak by sign, hemmed in by difficult company, or sitting in a house that undercuts what it rules? A pairing between two damaged planets is a pairing between two damaged planets.
Where does the combination sit? The same two lords joined in the tenth house speak about work and standing. Joined in the twelfth, the same pair speaks about expenditure, distance and withdrawal, and the reading changes with it.
Is a period of either planet running? A combination in the chart is a standing capacity. Tradition holds that it shows its results during the period of one of the planets involved, or a sub-period inside it. A person can carry a strong pairing for forty years and meet it late.
Does anything else in the chart argue with it? A chart is read whole. One good combination does not overrule everything around it, and one difficult placement does not cancel everything either.
The other combinations people mean by the word
Three other families get called raj yoga in ordinary conversation, and it is worth separating them.
The Panch Mahapurusha combinations form when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn sits in an angle from the lagna, in its own sign or its sign of exaltation. These are about the character and bearing of the person rather than about status directly, and each of the five is described differently in the texts.
Wealth combinations join the lords of the second and eleventh houses with the lords of the first, fifth and ninth. They speak about money arriving and staying, which is a narrower claim than standing.
Cancellation of debilitation is treated as a raj yoga by several classical writers when the conditions are met properly. That one has its own article, because it is the combination most often claimed and least often checked. You can read it at neech bhang raj yoga.
And the pairing that most texts rate above the rest is the one between the ninth lord and the tenth lord, which is set out separately in dharma karmadhipati yoga.
How to check your own chart
Cast the chart with your birth date, your birth time as accurately as you can get it, and your birth place. Note the sign rising, which fixes the lagna and therefore every house.
Find the lord of the first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses. Find the lord of the fifth and the ninth. Write down the six planets that result, allowing for the fact that some planets will rule two of them.
Then look for the four connections. Two of those lords in the same house. Two of them facing each other. Two of them in each other's signs. One in the other's house.
If you find one, note which houses the lords rule, where the meeting happens, and what condition the two planets are in. That short note is worth more than any label a calculator prints.
What a raj yoga does not promise
Older astrological writing came out of a court world where raj yoga meant a share of actual royal power, and the language stayed after the world changed. Read plainly, the combination indicates capacity in the areas the two houses govern, and a period of life when that capacity is more available than usual. It does not indicate an amount of money, a title, or a date.
This is worth saying plainly, because the question comes up constantly. A chart shows the ground you are standing on and the weather you are standing in. It does not walk for you. If someone has told you that a raj yoga in your kundli guarantees a particular outcome, they have overstated what the tradition itself claims.
If you want the combinations in your own chart identified and weighed properly, with the periods they belong to, that is what a written reading is for.
Questions people ask
Can a raj yoga calculator work with only my date of birth?
No. Every raj yoga is defined by house lords, and the houses come from your birth time and place. A date alone can show which signs the planets were in that day, which is useful for other things, but the house lords remain unknown.
I have a raj yoga and nothing has happened. Why?
The most common reasons are that the combination involves planets in poor condition, that it sits in a house that turns its meaning inward, or that the period of neither planet has run yet. Tradition ties the fruit of a combination to the periods of the planets that make it. A capacity that has never had its season looks, from inside, exactly like no capacity at all.
How many raj yogas are good?
Counting them is the wrong measure. One well-placed pairing between two strong lords, in a house that suits what they rule, with a period to carry it, says more than six weak ones. Astrologers who quote a count are usually quoting software output rather than a reading.
