Angarak yoga, Mars with Rahu, and the three things it gets confused with
Angarak yoga is the name given to Mars sitting with Rahu, either in a birth chart or in the sky as a transit. Angarak is one of the old names of Mars and means the burning ember, so the label is really just Mars at his hottest, with Rahu beside him.
If you came here for the 2026 dates, here they are, and they have already passed. Mars and Rahu shared the sign of Aquarius from 23 February 2026 to 2 April 2026, and were exactly together on 14 March 2026. The next time it happens is late December 2027 to early February 2028, in Capricorn, exact around 8 January 2028. These are sidereal positions, the ones an Indian panchang uses.
That is the honest answer to the date question. The rest of this page is what the tradition actually says about the combination, and the three quite different things people arrive here having mixed up with it.
Three things that are not the same
Angarak yoga is Mars with Rahu. That is this page.
Mangal Dosha is Mars placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, and it comes up in marriage matching. Rahu has nothing to do with it. A chart can have one, both or neither, and they are read separately.
Angaraki Chaturthi is not a difficulty at all. It is Sankashti Chaturthi falling on a Tuesday, an observance kept for Ganesha, and in Maharashtra it is one of the better attended days of the month. People in Nagpur ask me about this more than any other item on this list, usually after reading something frightening about Angarak yoga and assuming the two are related. They are not. The shared word is only the name of Mars, whose day is Tuesday.
What the tradition holds about Mars with Rahu
Mars in this tradition is heat, force, the will to start and the willingness to fight. Rahu is amplification and appetite, the pull to go further and faster than is sensible. Put them in one sign and the reading is consistent across the older sources: impulse with the brakes off.
In practice, that is described as haste, a shorter fuse than usual, arguments that escalate past the thing being argued about, decisions taken while hot, and accidents that follow from speed rather than from bad luck. Some texts also connect it to fire, sharp implements and machinery, which is worth knowing without being worth dreading.
There is another side, and honest sources give it. The same combination reads as unusual drive. Mars supplies the force and Rahu removes the hesitation, and in the matters of the house where they sit that can look like a person who pushes through something other people would not attempt. Surgeons, sportspeople, soldiers, people who run towards trouble for a living. Which face shows depends on the rest of the chart, on the house involved, and on what the person does with it.
What I will not do is tell you what the combination will cause. A chart indicates a tendency. It does not remove your hand from the wheel, and in this particular case your hand on the wheel is exactly the point.
Where it matters in a chart
Three things decide whether this combination is a footnote or something to read carefully.
The house it falls in. Mars and Rahu together in the third house is not the same matter as Mars and Rahu together in the seventh. The house tells you which part of life takes the heat.
What the two planets rule for you. Mars is the natural ruler of energy and conflict for everyone, but in your chart he also owns two specific houses, decided by your ascendant. That ownership matters more than the general reputation of the combination.
The distance between them. Same sign is the usual definition. A few degrees apart reads more strongly than twenty five degrees apart, though I would not be precise about a boundary that the texts themselves do not fix.
To check any of this you need an accurate birth time, since all of it is counted from the ascendant. A free kundli is here. If you want it read against the actual houses rather than against a general description, that is what a reading does.
What a transit like the 2026 one actually touches
When Mars and Rahu meet in the sky, they meet in one sign, and that sign sits in some particular house of your chart. That is the whole mechanism. In February and March 2026 the sign was Aquarius, so the weeks touched a different area of life for a Taurus ascendant than for a Scorpio one.
A transit is also short. The two shared a sign for about five weeks and were tightly together for a few days around 14 March. Anything described as a life changing period on that basis is being oversold. What a transit of this kind reasonably asks for is a few weeks of not being in a hurry.
Remedies, said plainly
Tradition prescribes the Mars observances: Tuesday, Hanuman, the Hanuman Chalisa, red lentils or red cloth given in charity, restraint in speech and in food, and for Rahu the customary charity on Saturdays. If you keep any of these already, keep them. They are old, they cost little, and they settle a person.
Here is the part that is usually left out. No observance moves Mars or Rahu. What actually reduces the risk in a period the tradition reads as hasty is behaviour: drive slower, do not sign or send anything while angry, do not take a physical risk you would normally think twice about, let an argument wait a day. That is the ordinary advice of the tradition put in plain words. The remedy that works is the one that changes what you do, and the observance, at its best, is the reminder to do it.
Anyone selling you an expensive stone for Angarak yoga, or a costly ritual to remove it, is selling you something. Be careful with red coral in particular, which is commonly pushed for anything with Mars in it and which no honest astrologer would recommend without reading the whole chart first.
Questions people actually ask
Is Angarak yoga bad for marriage?
Not in itself, and the fear usually comes from confusing it with Mangal Dosha, which is a separate matter of Mars occupying one of five houses. If Mars and Rahu sit together in the seventh house or afflict its lord, that is worth reading carefully, and it is still one factor among several. What decides marriage matters in a chart is the seventh house and its lord, Venus and Jupiter, and the timing of the period the chart is running, weighed together and against the other person's chart.
How often does Angarak yoga happen in the sky?
Roughly once every year and nine months to two years, because Mars takes about that long to catch up to Rahu, who is slowly moving backwards. It happened in Aquarius in early 2026 and comes next in Capricorn around January 2028.
I was born with Mars and Rahu together. Should I be worried?
No. It is a common enough combination and it describes a temperament more than an event: quick, forceful, impatient with obstacles. What I look for in such a chart is whether the person has understood that the same speed is their strength and their weak point at once, because that is where the reading becomes useful to them. What the combination deserves is care about anger and about physical risk, not a life lived braced for something.
