An empty 7th house means nothing is wrong. It is the single most common worry people bring me after looking at their own chart online, and the answer is the same every time: a house with no planet in it is read through its sign, through the planet that rules that sign, and through the planets that look at it. Marriage is not cancelled because nobody is sitting in the room.

The same is true in the Navamsa, the division chart drawn by cutting each sign into nine parts, which astrologers read alongside the birth chart when the question is marriage. An empty 7th house there is just as ordinary, and it is read the same way.

The arithmetic nobody mentions

There are nine grahas in a kundli and twelve houses. Even if every one of them sat in a different house, three houses would still be empty. And they do not spread themselves out politely. The Sun, Mercury and Venus travel close together and are never far apart in a chart, so grahas arrive in clusters and the real number of empty houses in a given kundli is usually higher than three.

Put plainly: an empty house is the normal condition of a house. If emptiness were a problem, almost every chart ever drawn would be a problem chart. What matters is not whether a planet is sitting in the 7th but what the 7th is connected to.

How an empty 7th house is actually read

There are four places I look, in this order.

The sign on the 7th. This is fixed by your ascendant and it is never absent. A 7th house in Capricorn behaves differently from a 7th house in Cancer, planets or no planets. It sets the temperature of the way you partner: cautious or open, formal or easy, quick or slow.

The lord of the 7th, and where it has gone. This is the main thread. The house that lord occupies points at the setting your marriage life plays out in. Tradition reads a 7th lord in the 10th as marriage and work that keep meeting, in the 12th as distance, a different city or a different country, in the 6th as friction, service or health running as a theme in the household, and in the 11th as a match that tends to come through friends or a wider circle. Where that lord sits, and whether it is strong or troubled, does most of the work of the reading.

Venus, and for a woman's chart traditionally Jupiter. Venus is the significator of marriage for everyone. Its condition says a great deal about how easily a person gives and receives affection.

What looks at the 7th. A house with nothing in it is still receiving aspects. Jupiter's view of the 7th is read as protective. Saturn's is read as slowing and steadying. Mars brings heat. Those aspects matter more in an empty house, not less, because there is nothing else there to compete with them.

Add the period running now, and you have an actual reading. Nothing in that sequence needed a planet in the 7th.

The Navamsa is drawn by taking each sign, cutting it into nine parts, and noting which part each planet fell in. It is used as a second look at marriage and at the strength of the chart as a whole.

An empty 7th house there means exactly what it means in the birth chart: read the sign, read the lord of that sign and where it sits in that chart, read Venus and Jupiter, read the aspects. Astrologers weigh the two charts together rather than letting one overrule the other.

One caution matters more here than anywhere else. The Navamsa is very sensitive to your birth time. On average its rising point changes every quarter of an hour or so, and depending on the season and where you were born it can change faster. If your birth time is a family memory of "about eight in the evening", the division chart is a guess dressed as precision, and any astrologer who reads it confidently off a rounded time is overreaching. In that situation I say so, work from the birth chart, and treat the division chart as supporting evidence at most.

What the empty 7th does not say

It does not say you will marry late. It does not say you will not marry. It does not say the marriage will be cold, and it certainly does not describe your spouse's face. The old pages that ranked for this question leaned on those claims, and none of them survives contact with the actual method.

If anything, the honest reading runs the other way. An empty 7th house means the marriage question in your chart is being carried by a planet somewhere else, and that planet has its own house, its own sign, its own strength and its own period. Which means there is more to say about your marriage, not less. It just has to be looked at properly rather than guessed from a blank box.
