Neech Bhang Yoga, and what a calculator cannot settle for you

Neech Bhang Yoga means the cancellation of a planet's debilitation. A planet sitting in the sign where tradition calls it weakest can, when certain other conditions are present in the same kundli, stop behaving like a weak planet. A calculator can check those conditions mechanically and tell you whether one or more of them is met. What it cannot do is tell you how much that matters in your chart, because the classical texts do not agree on the list of conditions, and because the answer depends on your birth time being right. That is the honest version.

What debilitation means in the first place

Each of the seven planets is assigned one sign where it is said to be at its strongest and the sign opposite to it where it is said to be at its weakest. The weak sign is its neecha, its debilitation.

Rahu and Ketu are left out of that table on purpose. The mainstream tradition does not assign them exaltation and debilitation signs the way it does the seven above, and the lists you find online for them disagree with each other, so a debilitated Rahu is not a thing this page can settle.

Debilitation is not a verdict and it is not a dosha. It is a statement about fit. The sign a planet sits in does not suit the way that planet naturally works, so the matters it governs tend to be expressed awkwardly, late, or with more effort than the same placement would need elsewhere. A debilitated Venus is not a person who will never be loved. It usually indicates that the Venus side of life, comfort, taste, partnership, is worked out through something plainer and more practical than Venus would choose for itself.

It also matters where in the sign the planet falls. Each planet has one exact degree of deepest debilitation, and a planet several degrees away from it is not in the same condition as one sitting on it. That degree is the first thing I look at, before any question of cancellation comes up.

The conditions that are said to cancel it

The classical sources for this are Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika, and they give overlapping but not identical lists. The conditions that appear most consistently are these.

The lord of the sign the planet is debilitated in sits in an angle. The angles are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, counted either from the ascendant or from the Moon. Venus debilitated in Virgo, with Mercury in one of those houses, is the standard example.

The lord of the planet's strongest sign sits in an angle. For that same debilitated Venus, this would be Jupiter, who owns Pisces, placed in an angle from the ascendant or the Moon.

The debilitated planet is joined by, or receives the aspect of, one of those two lords. Contact with the sign lord or with the lord of the exaltation sign is treated as relief.

The debilitated planet is joined by, or aspected by, a planet in its own strongest sign. Some texts extend this to any strong benefic in close contact.

The debilitated planet itself sits in an angle from the ascendant or the Moon. Some of the classical lists include this one; others treat it as supporting rather than sufficient.

Some later writers add a further condition drawn from the divisional charts an astrologer also casts, where a planet weak in the main chart sits well in the subdivision. I use that as confirmation, not as the deciding factor.

You will notice that a single chart can satisfy two of these and fail three. That is normal, and it is the reason two competent astrologers can look at the same kundli and describe the same planet differently.

What a Neech Bhang Yoga calculator is doing

A calculator takes your date, time and place of birth, computes the chart, finds any debilitated planet, and then tests the rules its author chose to program. That is genuinely useful. Checking whether Mercury is in the 4th from the Moon is arithmetic, and a machine does arithmetic better than either of us.

Three limits are worth knowing before you trust the output.

It is only as good as your birth time. The house positions, and therefore most of these conditions, move when the birth time moves. Twenty minutes of error can move the ascendant into the next sign and change every angle in the chart. If your birth time came from memory rather than from a record, treat any yes or no as provisional.

It is only as good as the rule list its author picked. Two calculators can disagree on the same chart, and both can be defensible, because they are following different texts.

It says nothing about degree of strength. A planet one degree from its deepest debilitation with one condition met, and a planet at the edge of the sign with four conditions met, will both return the same word. They are not the same chart.

Use it the way you would use a blood test result you have not yet discussed with anyone. It is a real reading, and it is not the diagnosis.

What cancellation does not mean

This is where the internet writing on this topic goes wrong, and I want to be plain about it.

Cancellation is not promotion. A debilitated planet whose debilitation is cancelled is not thereby an exalted planet. The texts describe the removal of a weakness, not the granting of a strength. When you read that Neech Bhang Raja Yoga makes a person a king, you are reading a translation of a hopeful classical phrase, not a prediction about your career.

It is also not the whole chart. One combination sitting in a chart with a hundred other factors does not decide a life. Whether the affected planet is running its mahadasha, the years that belong to it, which house it rules for your ascendant, and what else is sitting with it all change the reading considerably. A condition met on paper by a planet that governs nothing important in your chart is a footnote.

And it is not a promise about timing or outcome. Tradition holds that the difficulty around such a planet tends to be front-loaded, and that the same matters are handled more capably later. That is a tendency described in texts and seen in charts, not a guarantee, and I would not tell you an age by which anything must happen.

How I read it when someone asks

When a person brings me a chart with a debilitated planet, the degree of the debilitation and what that planet actually governs for their ascendant settle most of the answer before the word cancellation comes up at all. What I end up saying is rarely yes or no. It is stronger or weaker, and in which department of life.

That is less satisfying than a calculator's one word answer. It is also closer to what the chart supports.
