Red flags in a relationship, and what a chart can honestly tell you
No chart will tell you whether the person you are with is treating you badly. That question is answered by what happens in your house on an ordinary Tuesday, and you already hold that evidence. What a chart can honestly show is friction: where two people want different speeds, where money or family is likely to be the sore point, and which stretches of time put a relationship under more weight than usual.
I want to be blunt about this at the start, because the version of this page that used to sit here was one of the more harmful kinds of astrology writing. Lists of placements that supposedly mark a toxic partner. Sun signs that are said to be manipulative. A confident tone on a question where confidence is not available.
Why placement lists are the wrong tool
Two reasons, and both are simple.
The first is that no placement makes a person cruel. Every configuration people list as a warning sign belongs to millions of ordinary, decent people. If a placement predicted cruelty, you could identify cruel people from birth data alone, and no astrologer in any tradition has ever been able to do that.
The second is what these lists do in real life. Someone reads that a certain placement in their husband's chart means he is controlling. Now every argument has a piece of evidence attached to it that cannot be answered. Or the reverse, which I have seen more often and which is worse: a woman is told her own chart carries a dosha, and she concludes that the way she is being treated is something she brought with her. Astrology used that way is not a tool for understanding. It is a tool for settling arguments unfairly.
What a chart genuinely shows about a marriage under strain
The honest list is shorter and less dramatic.
The seventh house and the planet that rules it describe how you approach partnership and what kind of union you tend to make. Under pressure, they read as a marriage that takes effort, and often as one where the two people want different things from the same house.
Venus stands for affection and for the spouse, and its condition says something about warmth, about whether comfort flows easily in the relationship or has to be worked for.
Mars brings heat. Where Mars is strongly involved with the marriage part of a chart, arguments tend to be loud and fast rather than cold. That is a description of temperature, not of harm, and it is worth saying that loud households are not automatically unhappy ones.
Saturn brings weight, duty and delay. A period like Sade Sati running over the Moon often coincides with a marriage feeling heavy and joyless for a stretch. That is genuinely useful to know, because it is a stretch, and stretches end.
Timing. The most valuable thing in the whole reading. Knowing that the pressure of the last year belongs to a period that runs for another eleven months and then lifts changes what you decide this week.
Notice that none of that tells you what to do. A chart can say this is a hard year for the two of you. It cannot say leave, and it cannot say stay.
The flags that are actually flags
None of these are astrological, and all of them matter more than anything in a kundli.
Money you do not have access to, or an account you must justify. Being asked to account for ordinary spending while the same standard does not run the other way.
Distance from your own people that grew slowly. Fewer visits home, fewer calls with old friends, and a reason each time.
Being checked on. Phone, location, messages, who you were with. This gets normalised very quickly and it should not be.
Contempt rather than anger. Anger passes. Contempt is a settled position about who you are, and it is the one I have seen do the most lasting harm.
The cycle: a serious incident, a period of extraordinary warmth, and then the same incident again. If you have been round that loop three times, the loop is the relationship.
Fear. If you find yourself planning your evening around what mood you will find, that is information, and it does not require confirmation from anywhere else.
If any of that is present, the question is not astrological and I am not the right person to answer it. In India, 112 is the emergency number and 181 is the women's helpline. A person outside both families, a counsellor or a lawyer, is worth more at that point than any reading.
Where a chart does help
Three places, and they are real.
It tells you what season you are in. People in the middle of a hard stretch almost always believe it is permanent. Often it is not, and a period that has an end date is easier to think inside.
It tells you something about yourself that is hard to see from where you stand. That you idealise people early and then feel betrayed by ordinariness. That you go quiet instead of arguing, for months. That the pattern of the marriage was set in the first house you lived in, not in this one.
It gives families a language they will accept. This one is unglamorous but I use it often. A family that will not hear a young couple's reasons will sometimes hear that this is a heavy period and that no decision should be forced right now. That has bought people the months they needed.
If you want the timing worked out properly for your own chart, that is what a reading covers. Where the pressure is Saturn's, Sade Sati and a love marriage is the more useful piece.
What I would say across the table
Separate two questions that get tangled together. Is this safe, and is this repairable. The first is urgent, is not astrological, and is answered by the list above. The second is slow, and a chart, a counsellor and time can all contribute to it.
Do not take an irreversible step in the worst week of a bad stretch, and do not stay for years on the strength of an astrologer's assurance that it improves after the next period. Both of those are ways of handing your own decision to someone else.
Questions people ask
Can a chart tell me if my partner is cheating?
No. Astrologers do read some indications about the seventh house and about attachments elsewhere, and I have seen those readings be wrong in both directions often enough that I will not put a person's marriage on them. If you have a real suspicion, it is a matter between the two of you, and a chart will only give you something to point at.
My kundli was said to show a difficult marriage. Is that fixed?
No chart is a sentence. What such a reading usually means is that the marriage area of your chart takes effort, or that a heavy period is running over it. Plenty of marriages described that way are working, because two people worked at them. Ask the astrologer what the indication rests on and over what years it runs, and treat anything vaguer than that as opinion.
Should I do a puja to fix a bad marriage?
If it belongs to your family's practice and it steadies you, that is a reasonable thing to do, and tradition holds these observances as ways of settling the mind. What I would not do is pay a large sum to an astrologer who found the problem and is now selling the solution, and I would not treat any ritual as a substitute for the conversation that actually needs to happen.
