Sanyasa yoga in a kundli, and why a calculator will over-report it

Sanyasa yoga, called pravrajya yoga in the older texts, is the name given to a small group of combinations that the classics connect with renunciation. The best known of them is four or more planets sitting together in one house.

Before anything else, the thing you actually came to find out. Having this combination in your kundli does not mean you will leave your home and family, and no astrologer should tell you it does. The grouping that triggers it is far more common than the outcome the old books describe, and any calculator that checks the geometry alone will report it for a great many ordinary lives.

What the classics describe

Two conditions carry most of the weight in the older sources.

The first, and the one everybody means, is four or more planets with strength occupying a single house. The texts then say the strongest planet in that group indicates the kind of path the person takes, and they name orders of renunciates that existed when those verses were written, some of which no longer exist in the same form. Saturn is given the most austere of them. That detail is historically interesting and I would not build a prediction on it.

The second is the Moon standing under Saturn's influence and cut off from Jupiter's, with the texts adding finer conditions from divisions of the chart that no reader can check from a birth chart alone. The sense of it is a mind trained early towards restraint and away from attachment.

Beyond these, the sources put weight on the twelfth house, on Ketu, and on Saturn generally, since between them they cover withdrawal, dissolution and the giving up of things.

Several of the same texts also give conditions under which the renunciation does not follow at all. Where the lord of the ascendant or a strong benefic influences the group, they say, the person stays in the world and leads within it rather than leaving it. That qualification is in the tradition itself, and it is the first thing dropped by pages written to alarm you.

Why the geometry alone over-reports

This is worth understanding, because it explains why a calculator hands out sanyasa yoga so freely.

Mercury never appears more than about a sign away from the Sun, and Venus never much more than two. The two of them are tied to the Sun and travel with it. So Sun, Mercury and Venus in one sign is a common arrangement rather than a remarkable one, and it takes only the Moon passing through, or Mars in the neighbourhood, to make four.

Groups of four planets in one house are therefore not rare. Renunciates are. Any rule that fires far more often than the thing it claims to predict is a rule that needs the rest of the chart before it means anything, and the classics knew this, which is why they attach conditions about strength, about aspects and about the ascendant lord.

What it usually looks like in an actual life

What I look for in a chart with a heavy grouping is temperament, not departure, and that is what the tradition describes when it is read carefully rather than dramatically.

A pull towards solitude that other people find hard to understand. An indifference to accumulating things, which a family can mistake for a lack of ambition. Long stretches of interest in practice, study or teaching. A readiness to walk away cleanly from situations other people cling to, in work as much as in relationships. And a period, often a Saturn or Ketu period, in which a person withdraws for a while and comes back changed.

That is the sort of thing such a chart indicates. Not a bag and a bus ticket. A cast of mind that holds the world a little more loosely than average.

There is one more thing worth saying, because it is the honest half of the picture. Where four planets sit in one house, that house takes on an enormous concentration of the chart. Whatever it governs becomes the main business of the life. That concentration is often the more useful reading, and it has nothing to do with renunciation at all.

What a calculator can and cannot do

A calculator can tell you whether the geometry is present. Four planets in one house, the Moon with Saturn, the twelfth house occupied. That much is arithmetic and it needs your date, exact time and place of birth. You can get a chart made here.

What it cannot do is weigh the group, and weight is the whole of the tradition here. Are those four planets strong or are three of them scorched by proximity to the Sun. Is the ascendant lord looking at them. Is Jupiter connected to the Moon or not. Which house is it, and what does that house rule for your ascendant in particular. Is the chart otherwise engaged with the world, full of house lords in good positions and a working tenth house.

Those judgements are what a reading is. If a page has given you a yes or no on sanyasa yoga from a form with three fields, it has given you the first ten per cent of the question. If you want the rest, that is what a reading covers.

A word about how this topic gets used

I will be blunt, because this particular combination has done real damage in families.

Parents ask me this after a printed chart has told them their child will become a sadhu. Families ask it after a marriage proposal has been questioned on the strength of a single line. People ask it after being sold an expensive remedy to prevent something the texts never promised would happen. When I look at what the finding rests on, it is usually four planets in one house and nothing else weighed at all.

I do not make that prediction, and I do not think it can be responsibly made. What can be said honestly is what a chart indicates: a temperament, an area of life that carries unusual concentration, and periods when withdrawal is likely to appeal. What a person does with any of that is theirs.

Does sanyasa yoga mean I will leave my family?

No. The classics themselves make the outcome conditional on the strength of the group and on the influence of the ascendant lord and of benefics, and they describe cases where the person remains in the world and leads within it. The grouping that triggers the rule is common, and the outcome described in the verses is rare. Treat it as an indication about temperament, not as a forecast about your life.

Four planets are in one house of my chart. Is that the whole test?

It is the trigger, not the test. The tradition asks whether those planets have strength, whether the ascendant lord or a benefic aspects them, and which planet among them is strongest. It also matters greatly which house it is. A concentration in the tenth house reads as a life absorbed by work far more often than as renunciation.

Can sanyasa yoga be cancelled or removed?

The word cancelled belongs to a different discussion. The texts do not treat this as a defect to be repaired, the way they treat a debilitated planet in neecha bhanga. They treat it as one possible reading of a concentration, qualified by other factors in the same chart. Anyone offering to remove it for a fee is trading on your fear rather than on the tradition.
