Secrecy and distance in a relationship, and why sign lists get both wrong

There is no rashi that keeps relationships private, and no rashi that is built to handle distance. Lists of that kind sort eight billion people into twelve boxes on the basis of one planet, and they are written to be shared rather than to be true. What a chart does show, when it is a whole chart, is where privacy sits in a person's life and where separation sits, and those are house positions rather than sign labels.

I am rewriting two old pages into this one. Their old addresses say what they were: one exposed which zodiac signs keep secret relationships, the other ranked the signs most likely to make long distance work. Neither claim can be defended, so both are replaced by this.

Why the sign list version does not work

Two problems, and the second one is specific to Indian readers.

The first is resolution. A sign covers a twelfth of everyone. Whatever your Venus is doing, whichever house your 12th is, whatever period is running, the list gives you the same paragraph as a twelfth of the country, more than ten crore people. It cannot be wrong, because it never says anything narrow enough to be wrong.

The second is that the sign in those lists is usually not even your rashi. Western sun sign lists use the tropical zodiac. A kundli uses the sidereal zodiac, and the two currently sit about 24 degrees apart. So a person told they are a Scorpio, and given the paragraph about intensity and secrecy, is very often a Libra in their own kundli. The list was never about them to begin with. Where a chart actually locates privacy

The 12th house is the house of what is not on display. Tradition gives it expenditure, sleep, foreign places, withdrawal, and private life including the private side of a relationship. The 5th house holds romance and attraction. The 7th holds formal union, the relationship that has been declared.

So a relationship that is kept private tends to show as a connection between those houses. The 5th lord placed in the 12th, or the 7th lord in the 12th or the 8th, or Venus sitting in the 12th, or Rahu with Venus, are the placements tradition reads as attachment that stays out of view. The 8th house matters too, because it covers what is not spoken about.

Say plainly what that means and does not mean. It means the chart carries a private streak in matters of attachment. It does not mean the person is deceiving anyone. In India a relationship is very often kept quiet for reasons that have nothing to do with character: family that will not accept a community, a caste or a religion, a job in another city, a first marriage that ended, an age gap, a household where the subject cannot be raised. The chart shows privacy. It does not tell you the reason, and it certainly does not tell you the person is at fault.

I would add one more thing, because people write to me asking how to check whether a partner is hiding something. Do not use a chart for that. It will not give you a reliable answer, and the asking usually damages something that a conversation could have repaired.

Where a chart locates distance

Distance is a different set of houses. The 9th is long journeys, and the 12th is foreign places and residence away from home. The 3rd is short travel and, importantly, communication. The 4th is home and the pull back towards it.

A relationship that involves distance shows most often as the 7th lord placed in the 9th or the 12th, or as the 7th house holding a planet connected to those. Tradition also reads Saturn's involvement with the 7th as distance and delay, which in a marriage very often turns out to mean exactly that: two cities, or two countries, and a lot of waiting.

Whether distance is survivable is a different question from whether it is indicated, and the chart is more useful on the second than the first. What I would look at, if someone asked me seriously:

The moon, and its nakshatra. The moon describes emotional need. A moon that needs daily physical presence finds separation genuinely hard, and no amount of goodwill changes that. A moon that is comfortable alone finds it much easier. This is the single most useful factor in the chart for this question, and no sign list ever mentions it.

Mercury, because a relationship conducted mainly through a screen runs on communication. A well placed Mercury makes the difference between calls that carry the relationship and calls that drain it.

Saturn, because distance is endurance. Saturn's condition in a chart says a lot about how a person handles a long stretch of nothing improving.

And both charts, always. This is a two person question and half the data is in the other kundli. A great deal of what looks like incompatibility in one chart turns out to be the meeting of two charts, which is what Guna Milan is for.

What decides it

Not the chart. Distance is survived by people who talk honestly about how long it will last and what the plan is for ending it, and it fails when there is no end in view. Privacy holds where both people have agreed to it and stops being tolerable when only one of them has. A chart can describe the tendencies each person brings and the periods when the arrangement tends to come under most pressure. It cannot make the arrangement work, and it should not be asked to decide whether it is worth it.

Which zodiac sign keeps relationships secret?

None of them, as a group. Privacy in a relationship shows in a chart through the 12th and 8th houses and their connection to the 5th and 7th, which is a placement question and not a sign question. Two people of the same rashi can be entirely different on this.

Which zodiac signs are best at long distance relationships?

There is no reliable ranking, and any list offering one is guessing. The factors that actually matter in a chart are the moon and its nakshatra, which describe how much closeness a person needs, Mercury for communication, and Saturn for endurance. All three vary within every rashi.

Can an astrologer tell me if my partner is hiding a relationship?

I would not answer that question from a chart, and I would be careful with anyone who offers to. A chart can indicate a private disposition in matters of attachment. It cannot establish a fact about another person's conduct, and using it that way tends to do more harm than the doubt it was meant to settle.
