Ugadi 2026, the new year in the panchang, and what the year actually holds

Ugadi 2026 falls on Thursday 19 March. It is the first day of Chaitra, the first month of the lunar year, and the same day is kept as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra. What a new year reading can honestly offer is not twelve forecasts keyed to birth months. It is an account of where the slow planets sit for the year, and what that means for your rashi.

One practical note on the date before anything else. The tithi is short this year. Chaitra Shukla Pratipada begins at about 6:53 on the morning of the 19th and ends at about 4:52 on the morning of the 20th, so it does not cover sunrise on either day. What Ugadi actually marks

The Indian lunar month runs from new moon to new moon in most of the country, and Chaitra is the month that begins with the new moon falling around the start of spring. The first tithi of its bright half is Ugadi: yuga plus adi, the beginning of an age, or more modestly the beginning of a cycle.

It is a calendar event before it is an astrological one. The year gets a new name from a cycle of sixty, the almanac for the year is read out, and the household eats bevu bella, the neem and jaggery mixture whose whole meaning is that the year will contain both. That is a better piece of astrology than most predictions.

If you want the year's name, take it from the panchang you actually follow. The northern and southern reckonings of the sixty-year cycle do not always land on the same name in the same year, and the disagreement is old.

Where the slow planets are in this year

This is the part that can be stated exactly, because it is arithmetic rather than opinion.

Saturn is in Meena for the whole of the year. It entered Meena on 29 March 2025 and does not leave until June 2027. Why there is no real prediction for every sign

A rashifal written for all Meena readers has to be true of roughly one in twelve people alive. What it can legitimately say is what the transits do relative to that moon sign: Saturn is crossing your rashi this year, Jupiter moves into the second house from your Moon in June, and so on. That is real, and it is general.

What it cannot say is whether you will change jobs, whether the loan will come through, or when you will marry. Those depend on the whole chart, on the house positions that come from your birth time, and on the period you are running underneath the transit. Two people with the same rashi, born a year apart, are often in completely different years.

Is Ugadi the same as Gudi Padwa?

Yes, in the sense that both fall on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and mark the same lunar new year. The customs differ by region, and Ugadi is the name used in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana while Gudi Padwa is the Maharashtrian name. Where a panchang differs by a day, the difference is in how the tithi is resolved against sunrise, not in the underlying calculation.

Is Ugadi a good day to start something new?

Tradition treats the day itself as auspicious, and that is why so many purchases and openings are set for it. If you are choosing a time within the day for something specific, that is a separate calculation and it depends on your own chart as well as the day's panchang.
