How a wedding muhurat is actually chosen

A wedding date is not picked off a published list. It is narrowed in four steps: first the seasons when marriages are not fixed at all are removed, then the days in what is left that the panchang rules out, then the days that do not suit the bride's and groom's charts, and finally the days the two families can actually manage. What is left is usually a handful of dates, and one of them is the muhurat.

The first two steps are the same for everybody and can be published, and they are below. The last two are not, which is the honest reason no page can give you your date.

The closed seasons, and why

Four things close a stretch of the calendar to weddings. None of them is about your chart, and none of them is Mercury retrograde, which is the wrong filter and the one most people arrive holding.

The Sun in Sagittarius, and the Sun in Pisces. Traditionally no marriage is fixed while the Sun passes these two signs. That is roughly 16 December to 14 January, and roughly 15 March to 14 April, every year. This is why March, which people search for constantly, is a short month for weddings: in most years only the first two weeks of it are open.

Chaturmas. From Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha to Prabodhini Ekadashi in Kartik, about four months, no weddings are fixed. This is the longest closure of the year and it takes out the whole monsoon.

An adhik maas. When a lunar month contains no solar sankranti it is counted as an extra month and inserted into the calendar. Weddings are not fixed in it.

Venus or Jupiter too close to the Sun. When either is within about ten degrees of the Sun it is counted as set, and marriages are not fixed while that lasts. Venus and Jupiter are the two planets a marriage muhurat leans on, so this rule can remove a fortnight from an otherwise open stretch.

Here is how those fall across the current season, computed rather than copied.

The two rows that say a planet is set are the ones a printed festival list will not give you, so it is worth saying where they come from. Jupiter comes within ten degrees of the Sun on 16 July 2026 and stays there into the middle of August, which closes the last nine days before Chaturmas anyway begins. Venus does the same from 6 July 2027, eight days before Chaturmas opens again on 14 July 2027. Venus is also set for a fortnight from about 18 October 2026, but that falls inside Chaturmas and removes nothing that was not already closed.

Two cautions on that. The degree at which a planet is counted as set is not identical in every tradition, and a few panchangs put Jupiter's limit at eleven and reduce Venus's when it is moving backwards, which shifts these edges by a day or two either way. And this overlay has been worked out only as far as the rows above. Do not carry a "nothing is set" conclusion forward into a season nobody has checked.

What the panchang then rules out

Inside an open stretch, not every day is available.

The old texts name a set of nakshatras as fit for marriage: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati are the usual list. The moon passes through one nakshatra roughly every day, so this alone cuts the available days by more than half.

Then the tithi. Fourth, ninth and fourteenth of either fortnight are avoided, and so is amavasya. Then the weekday: Tuesday is generally avoided. Then a handful of named unfavourable stretches within the day itself, which is why muhurats are given as a time band and not as a date.

None of this is mysterious and none of it is secret. It is a filter, and applying it to an open month leaves perhaps six to ten candidate days.

Then the two charts, which is where it stops being general

This is the part that cannot be published, and it is the part that actually matters.

The date is checked against the moon's position in the bride's chart and in the groom's, which is different for each of them and different from the general list above. Whether Sade Sati or a difficult period is running for either of them is looked at. The seventh house of both charts is looked at, and so is the state of Venus and Jupiter in each of them on that day.

Two couples looking at the same open fortnight will end up with different dates. That is not an astrologer being awkward. It is the only reason to consult one rather than to use a printed list.

If you want that done properly, both birth details are needed, and it is worth doing at least three months before the date is announced, because the list of workable days is short and venues do not wait. A reading covers it, and if the compatibility question is still open then Guna Milan is done first and the date afterwards. If the question underneath is not which date but whether marriage is near at all, that is a different reading.

What a muhurat is and is not

A well chosen muhurat is a considered start. Tradition holds that a thing begun in a favourable moment carries some of that moment with it, and I have no argument with that. It is also true that the ceremony being calm, the families being agreed and the couple being ready matter more to the marriage than the minute the knot is tied.

I want to be plain about the limit, because a lot of wedding astrology content is not. A muhurat does not guarantee a marriage will go well. It does not prevent difficulty. It cannot fix a mismatch that showed up in the compatibility check and was ignored. Nobody in the tradition claims otherwise, and anyone telling you a particular date will make your marriage happy is selling you a date.

The other honest thing to say is that if the only dates the two families can manage fall in a closed season, that is a real conflict, and it is a family decision rather than an astrological one. People marry in Chaturmas. I would rather say that than have someone pay for a date that was never going to work for them.

Questions people ask

Can you give me a list of good wedding dates for next year?

Not one that means anything. The general open windows are published above and are the same for everybody. The dates within them are worked out from the bride's and groom's charts, and a list produced without those is a list of days that are merely not bad.

Why is March such a difficult month for a wedding?

Because the Sun enters Pisces around the middle of March every year, and no marriage is fixed while the Sun is in Pisces. That leaves only the first fortnight of March open in most years, and the panchang then removes several of those days.

How far ahead should the date be fixed?

Three to six months, and earlier if the season you want is a short one. The candidate days in any open window are few, and once venue and travel are added the choice narrows fast. Ask before you book, not after.
