Hasta nakshatra, the famous names, and what auspicious actually means

Three well known Indians are almost certainly born with the Moon in Hasta: the scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose, born 30 November 1858, when the Moon was in Hasta for all but the last nine minutes of the day, Nana Patekar, born 1 January 1951, and the singer Shamshad Begum, born 14 April 1919. In each case the Moon sat in Hasta for more than twenty-one hours out of twenty-four, so the birth time barely matters.

The word auspicious in the phrase auspicious Hasta nakshatra is doing something different from what most readers assume, and it is worth clearing up before the list, because the misunderstanding causes real disappointment.

What auspicious actually refers to

In the panchang, nakshatras are classed by what they suit. Hasta belongs to the group traditionally called light or swift, along with Ashwini and Pushya, and days when the Moon is in Hasta are recommended for starting work, for travel, for learning a craft, for buying tools, and for anything that should be quick and clean.

That is a statement about choosing a day. It is not a statement about the people born on it.

I say this because families arrive believing that a Hasta birth guarantees a fortunate life, and are then confused when life behaves normally. Choosing a good day to begin something and being born on such a day are unrelated ideas that share a vocabulary. Nothing in the classical material claims that being born in an auspicious nakshatra makes a person lucky.

What Hasta is

Hasta is the thirteenth nakshatra, running from 10 degrees to 23 degrees 20 minutes of Virgo. The Moon governs it, Mercury rules the sign. Its presiding deity is Savitr, the Sun in its quickening aspect, the one that sets things in motion at daybreak. Its star group lies in Corvus.

The name means hand, and the symbol is an open palm. Every association follows from that. Hasta is the nakshatra of skill in the hands: craft, making, healing touch, precise work, and the older texts add a second sense of the hand, which is the one that reaches out and takes hold of what it wants. Dexterity and acquisition sit side by side in the classical descriptions, and so does the accompanying caution about cleverness used for its own sake.

The names that survive a check

The Moon crosses a nakshatra in about thirteen hours and twenty minutes, so a birth date alone identifies the nakshatra correctly only about half the time. Nearly every celebrity nakshatra list is built from dates, which is why they contradict each other. Computed with the Lahiri ayanamsa used on this site, this is how the common Hasta names sort out.

Effectively certain, because the Moon was in Hasta for almost the whole day: Jagadish Chandra Bose, 30 November 1858; Nana Patekar, 1 January 1951; and Shamshad Begum, 14 April 1919.

Very likely: Madhubala, born 14 February 1933, with the Moon in Hasta until about 19:42; and Jyotirao Phule, born 11 April 1827, with the Moon in Hasta until about 18:04.

Very likely for a different reason: Swami Vivekananda, born 12 January 1863. The Moon was in Hasta until about 16:53 that day, so the whole morning and most of the afternoon fall inside Hasta. His birth time is commonly given as about 6:33 in the morning, which sits well inside that window, and it is worth saying that this figure is a received one rather than a documented record, in the same way as nearly every published birth time for a nineteenth century figure. The Hasta result does not depend on it.

Conditional on the hour, so given as conditions: P. V. Sindhu, born 5 July 1995, with the Moon entering Hasta at about 08:22; Ajay Devgn, born 2 April 1969, entering at about 07:40; and Anurag Kashyap, born 10 September 1972, leaving at about 11:42.

One name that fails on its own birth time

Subhas Chandra Bose appears on Hasta lists regularly. On 23 January 1897 the Moon entered Hasta only at about 16:25 in the evening. His birth time is widely published as a quarter past twelve in the afternoon, which places the Moon in the previous nakshatra, Uttara Phalguni, not in Hasta.

That example is worth keeping in mind whenever you read one of these lists. The date is not enough, and where a birth time does exist it quite often overturns the claim rather than confirming it.

What a birth nakshatra is genuinely used for

Three things, and they are all practical.

It fixes the traditional syllable a child is named from. It is one of the inputs when two charts are matched before a marriage, alongside the Moon signs and the seventh house. And it sets the starting point from which the planetary periods of a life are calculated, which is why an astrologer asks for it before almost anything else.

What it does not do is assign a personality. Look again at the confirmed names above: a plant physiologist, a character actor and a playback singer of the 1940s. A shared birth nakshatra did not give them a shared life. Anything that varies between them comes from the parts of the chart that need a birth time and place.
