Lucky numbers for a vehicle or a phone, and what they can honestly do

Your lucky number is worked out from your date of birth, and it takes about thirty seconds of arithmetic to find. A vehicle number or a phone number is then read by adding up its digits and reducing them to one digit, and seeing whether that digit sits well with yours.

That is the whole method. It is number lore, not chart reading, and it is worth being clear at the start about how much weight it can carry. A number plate does not drive a car and a phone number does not earn money. What this tradition offers is a small, harmless preference, not a lever on your life.

The two numbers that come from your birth date

Indian number lore gives every person two numbers. Both are just sums reduced to a single digit.

The birth number, called mulank, comes from the day of the month you were born on. Born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5. Born on the 9th: it is already 9. Born on the 30th: 3 + 0 = 3. That is it.

The destiny number, called bhagyank, comes from the whole date. Take 23 November 1988. Add every digit: 2 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 33, and 3 + 3 = 6. So this person is a 5 by birth number and a 6 by destiny number.

Two rules people get wrong. Reduce all the way down to a single digit, one to nine, unless you follow the schools that stop at 11 and 22. And use the calendar date, not the Hindu tithi. This particular tradition runs on the ordinary date.

The planet behind each digit

The reason numbers are read at all in India is that each one is tied to a graha. The mapping is the same in almost every book you will find:

Once you know that, the friendships between numbers are simply the friendships between the grahas. Sun and Jupiter and Mars sit together comfortably, so 1, 3 and 9 are read as an agreeable set. Venus and Saturn and Mercury are the other cluster, so 6, 8 and 5 are read together. Numbers ruled by grahas that do not agree are described as clashing.

This is also where the fear comes from. Number 8 belongs to Saturn, and Saturn has a heavy reputation, so people are told to avoid 8 in every plate and every SIM. I would not run my life that way. Saturn is slow and demanding, not malicious, and plenty of steady, long-built careers belong to people whose numbers are full of eights.

How a vehicle number or a phone number is read

Same arithmetic, applied to the number itself.

For a vehicle, take the numeric part of the registration. MH 31 AB 4729 gives 4 + 7 + 2 + 9 = 22, and 2 + 2 = 4. That vehicle reads as a 4, which is Rahu. Some practitioners add the letters too using their alphabet positions. I do not, because the letter series is issued by the RTO in sequence and carries no intent at all.

For a phone, add every digit of the ten digit number and reduce it the same way. A number that totals to 5, Mercury, is the one people ask for most, because Mercury is the graha of speech, trade and messages, and a phone is a speech instrument. That is a tidy piece of reasoning and it is the honest reason behind the preference, rather than any promise of income.

Then compare. If the number reduces to your own birth or destiny number, or to one of its friends, the tradition calls it suitable. If it reduces to a clashing digit, it calls it unsuitable. Nothing stronger than that is claimed in the older material. The stronger claims came later, from people selling numbers.

What I actually tell people who ask me to choose

People ask me this most often about a new car before a delivery date, or about a SIM being sold at a large premium.

If you have a genuine choice between two plates or two numbers at the same price, pick the one that reduces to your birth number or its friends. It costs you nothing and it will let you stop thinking about it, which is most of the value.

Do not pay a premium for a number. Do not delay a delivery for one. Do not change a phone number you have used for a decade, because the loss of every person who can reach you on it is real and immediate, and the gain is not. And if someone has told you that your current number is the reason a business is slow, please treat that as a sales pitch. In twenty five years I have never seen a chart where the number on a SIM was the thing to fix.

The other honest limit: this is number lore and your kundli is a different instrument. When somebody wants to know why work has stalled or when a marriage may settle, the answer is in the chart, in the positions and the long period you are running, not in an eight on a number plate. Questions people ask

Is number 8 really unlucky for a vehicle?

No. Eight belongs to Saturn, which is the graha of slowness, endurance and consequences, and that reputation has been flattened into "unlucky" by repetition. Tradition treats 8 as demanding, not dangerous. Road safety comes from the brakes, the tyres and the driver.

Should I use my birth number or my destiny number to check a phone number?

Use the birth number first, since it is the one this tradition leans on for everyday choices, and the destiny number as a second opinion. If a number agrees with both, that is the clean case. If they disagree, it is not a problem to solve, it just means the number is neutral for you.

Can changing my mobile number change my luck?

Nothing in the tradition claims that, and I do not claim it. A number that suits you is a small comfort and a small piece of order. If your income or your work is genuinely stuck, that belongs in a chart reading, alongside what the moon sign in your kundli shows, not in a new SIM card.
