Your moon sign, how it is found, and why India reads it first

Your moon sign, the janma rashi, is the rashi the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. To find it you need your birth date and place, and ideally the time, because the Moon crosses one rashi in about two and a quarter days and can change sign in the middle of any given day.

This is the sign Indian astrology actually uses. The rashifal in the newspaper, the Sade Sati your aunt keeps mentioning, the Guna Milan done before a marriage, all of it is worked from the moon sign. When a pandit asks for your rashi, he is asking for this, not for the sign you read in an English magazine.

Why the Moon and not the Sun

Two reasons, one practical and one about what the tradition thinks the Moon is.

The practical one first. The Sun stays in a rashi for a month, so a sun sign puts you in a group of one twelfth of everyone born that year. The Moon changes rashi every two and a quarter days, and changes nakshatra every day or so, which is a finer division and lets predictions be tied to the sky as it moves rather than to a calendar month.

The other reason is that the Moon in this tradition carries the mind. It is read as temperament, mood, memory, what comforts you and what unsettles you, and the mother. The Sun is read as the self in the world, authority, vitality and the father. The lagna is the frame, the body and the visible shape of a life. So when a reading wants to know how a period will feel to you rather than what it will do to your paperwork, it goes to the Moon.

Transits are read from the Moon for the same reason. Saturn crossing your moon sign is a description of pressure on the mind, and that is why Sade Sati is counted from the moon sign and not from anything else.

Any correctly cast chart shows it. Put your birth date, time and place into the free kundli and read where the Moon sits.

Three things to know before you compare it with something you have seen elsewhere.

Indian charts use the sidereal zodiac. Western charts use the tropical one, and the two differ by about twenty four degrees at present. So your Indian moon sign is very often the rashi before your western moon sign. Neither system is a mistake, they measure from different starting points, but do not mix results from the two and then wonder why they disagree.

The time matters more than people expect. If the Moon changed rashi on your birthday, then a morning birth and an evening birth give different answers. A rough time is usually enough to settle it, and if nobody remembers even that, an astrologer can often narrow it down.

The nakshatra is part of the answer. Alongside the rashi, a chart gives the nakshatra the Moon occupied, one of twenty seven, and the quarter of it. That pairing is what a serious reading works from, because two people can share a moon sign and sit in quite different nakshatras.

The naming syllable

This is why many families ask for the moon sign in the first week of a child's life. Each nakshatra is divided into four quarters, and each quarter has a syllable traditionally assigned to it. The child's formal name is chosen to begin with the syllable of the quarter the Moon occupied at birth.

It is a naming custom, and a nice one. It carries no prediction and it is not binding on anybody. Plenty of people go through life with a name that has nothing to do with their chart, and nothing in the tradition says this harms them. If you are naming a child and want the syllable, the chart will give it to you.

What the moon sign does not decide

It does not decide your career, your marriage or your health. Those are read from houses, and houses are counted from the lagna, which needs a proper birth time. A reading based on the moon sign alone can speak about temperament and about what transits are currently doing, and it should say plainly that it cannot do the rest. If you have been given a detailed forecast of your job and marriage from a moon sign and nothing else, you were given a general reading with your name written on it.

It also does not fix your character. Tradition holds that a particular Moon indicates a particular emotional grain, quick or slow, restless or settled, and I find that description genuinely useful when I say it to someone and watch them recognise themselves. Indicating is as far as it goes. People with the same moon sign live entirely different lives.

Questions people ask

Can I find my moon sign without a birth time?

Usually yes. The Moon spends about two and a quarter days in a rashi, so a whole day of uncertainty still leaves it in the same sign a little over half the time. Where it changed sign that day, you will need at least a rough time. The nakshatra, which changes about once a day, is more sensitive and does need a time.

Why is my Indian moon sign different from the one on a western site?

Because of the twenty four degree difference between the sidereal zodiac used in India and the tropical zodiac used in the west. If the Moon sat in the early degrees of a rashi, the two systems will name different signs. Both are computing the same Moon.

Which should I read, my moon sign rashifal or my sun sign horoscope?

The moon sign one, if you are reading Indian material, because that is what it was written for. Read either with the same caution: a forecast written for one twelfth of the population cannot know anything about your chart. It is a pleasant daily habit, not a reading.
