Your lagna, and the second chart that is read beside it

Your lagna is the rashi that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact minute and place you were born. It changes roughly every two hours, so two people born on the same day in the same city can have completely different charts, and this is the single reason an astrologer keeps asking you for the birth time.

Beside the main chart, tradition reads a second one built from the same positions by splitting every rashi into nine equal parts. Most astrologers call it the navamsa. It is not a separate horoscope and it does not overrule anything. It is a magnifying glass held over the same planets, used most often when the question is about marriage.

What the lagna actually is

Stand where you were born, at the moment you were born, and look east. The zodiac is turning overhead at about one degree every four minutes. Whichever rashi was coming up over that horizon is your lagna, also called the ascendant or the rising sign.

Three inputs are needed and all three are needed exactly: the date, the clock time, and the place. The place matters because the horizon is different in Nagpur than in Guwahati at the same instant. The time matters because four minutes of error moves the chart by roughly one degree, and about two hours of error moves it into an entirely different lagna.

The lagna becomes the first house of your chart, and every other house is counted from it. So the lagna is not one more piece of information about you. It is the frame that decides which part of life each graha is speaking about. Move the frame and the whole reading moves with it.

Why your newspaper sign is not your lagna

Most people carry three different signs and do not know it.

The sun sign is the rashi the Sun was in. In the sidereal reckoning used in India this is usually one rashi behind the western date ranges you may have seen, because the two systems differ by about twenty four degrees. Someone born on the 20th of April is often Aries here and Taurus in a western column.

The moon sign, the rashi the Moon was in, is what Indian astrology actually leans on for daily and yearly predictions. Sade Sati, the rashifal your mother listens to on the radio, the temple pandit's advice, all of it is worked from the moon sign, not the sun sign.

The lagna is the third, and it is the one that needs a birth time. When someone says a chart is "Kanya lagna", that is what they mean.

The chart built from ninths

Take any rashi, thirty degrees wide, and divide it into nine parts of three degrees twenty minutes each. Every graha falls into one of those nine parts, and each part maps to a rashi by a fixed rule. Do that for all nine grahas and the lagna, and you have the second chart.

What is it for. Tradition treats it as a check on strength. A graha that sits well in the main chart and also lands well in this one is read as genuinely capable of delivering what it promises. A graha that looks impressive in the main chart but falls badly here is read as promising more than it gives. When a graha keeps the same rashi in both charts, that is taken as a mark of it being well settled.

It is read most closely for marriage, because the seventh house of this chart, and the position of Venus in it, are held to describe the marriage partnership more finely than the main chart alone. This is where a lot of over promising happens on the internet. The tradition indicates temperament and the general shape of the partnership. It does not produce a photograph of a spouse, a face, a height, or a city. Anyone who tells you it does is selling something.

The other honest limit: since these are three degree twenty minute slices, this chart is far more sensitive to birth time error than the main one. If your time is remembered rather than recorded, this second chart may simply be wrong, and a careful astrologer will say so rather than read it anyway.

If you do not know your birth time

This is common, and it is not a dead end.

Some things still read cleanly. The moon sign is stable unless the Moon changed rashi that day, and the Moon moves about one rashi in two and a quarter days, so a whole day of uncertainty usually still leaves it in place. The slower grahas move so little across a single day that what a reading says about their mutual relationships is unaffected.

What does not read is anything that depends on houses: career questions, the seventh house on marriage, health, property. Those need the lagna.

A birth time can sometimes be narrowed by working backwards from events whose dates you know for certain, a marriage, a move, an illness, a job change, and seeing which lagna makes the timing line up. That process is honest work when it is done carefully and it is guesswork when it is done quickly. I will tell you which one you are getting.

Questions people ask

How much birth time error can a chart tolerate?

For the main chart, ten to fifteen minutes is usually survivable, because a lagna lasts about two hours and you are only in danger near its edges. For the ninth division chart, even a few minutes can move a graha into a different slice. Ask where in the lagna you fall. If the chart says you are close to the boundary, treat every house based reading as provisional.

Is the lagna more important than the moon sign?

They answer different questions. The lagna sets the houses, so it governs which area of life a result shows up in. The moon sign carries the mind and the running conditions, which is why transits and Sade Sati are read from it. A serious reading uses both, and disagreements between them are information rather than a contradiction.

Can this second chart tell me what my husband or wife will be like?

It indicates temperament and the general character of the partnership as tradition reads it, and that is the ceiling. It does not give appearance, initials, profession or the city they live in, whatever you have been shown online. What a careful reading can offer is the shape of the relationship and the periods in which such matters tend to settle, said as an indication and not as a fact.
