Vyaghata yoga in the panchang, and what it actually affects

Vyaghata is one of the twenty seven nitya yogas listed in the panchang for every single day. It is the thirteenth in that list, it lasts roughly a day, and it comes back about once a lunar month. Tradition counts it among the yogas under which one does not begin important new work.

That is the whole of it. Vyaghata is a calendar signal. It is not a mark on a person, and being born on a Vyaghata day says very little about a life.

What a nitya yoga actually is

The panchang has five limbs. Tithi, vaar, nakshatra, yoga and karana. The yoga here is not a planetary combination in a birth chart. It is a simple arithmetic quantity: take the position of the Sun along the zodiac, take the position of the Moon, add them, and divide the circle into twenty seven equal parts of thirteen degrees and twenty minutes each. Whichever part the total falls into gives the yoga of the moment.

Because the Moon moves quickly and the Sun slowly, this total advances through one part in about a day. The exact length varies, roughly nineteen to twenty seven hours, because the Moon's speed is not constant. So the yoga changes at an odd hour, not at sunrise, and a panchang will always give you the clock time at which it ends.

The twenty seven run in a fixed order, from Vishkambha at the start to Vaidhriti at the end. Vyaghata sits at number thirteen. The word means a blow or an obstruction, and the traditional lists count nine of the twenty seven as unfit for beginnings: Vishkambha, Atiganda, Shula, Ganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Vyatipata, Parigha and Vaidhriti. Several of those nine are set aside only in part, which is the point of the next section.

What tradition asks you to do on a Vyaghata day

Not much, and it is mostly about scheduling.

The muhurta texts ask that a new undertaking not be started under Vyaghata. In practice that means a wedding date, a housewarming, the first day of a shop, the signing of a purchase, a journey begun for a specific purpose. Those get moved by a day where they can be moved.

What is not asked is that you stop living. Work already under way continues. Daily duties continue. Medical treatment that is needed is never postponed for a panchang reading, and no astrologer with any sense will tell you otherwise. Routine matters, ongoing matters, repairs, study, and anything remedial or charitable are all held to be fine.

Many almanacs also mark part of the day rather than all of it. The first portion of certain yogas is treated as the difficult one and the later portion as usable. If a date genuinely cannot be moved, this is the seam a practitioner will look for, along with the tithi and the nakshatra running at the same hour. Vyaghata is not one of the yogas that carries a settled half rule of its own, so what is being looked for is a stretch of the day where the other limbs of the panchang are sound.

Born under Vyaghata

This is where the internet does the most harm, so let me be direct.

Roughly one person in twenty seven is born under any given nitya yoga. That is about four in a hundred people, which in a country of this size is tens of millions. Any claim that a birth yoga alone produces a life of obstruction is arithmetic nonsense before it is anything else.

The nitya yoga does appear in a birth chart reading, but as a small background note, well behind the ascendant, the placement of the Moon, the nakshatra, the condition of the planets, and the planetary period running now, the mahadasha. A birth yoga is not what decides a reading, and it is not a thing to build an explanation of a life on. If someone has told you that you were born under a bad yoga and that this explains your difficulties, you have been given a very small piece of a chart and asked to carry it as if it were the whole.

A correction worth making

You will find pages describing Vyaghata as a birth chart combination formed by the lords of the sixth and eighth houses coming together. That is not what the classical texts mean by the word, and it is not what your panchang is showing you when it prints Vyaghata against today's date.

Sixth and eighth lord combinations are a real subject in chart reading and they have their own names and their own treatment. Borrowing the name Vyaghata for them muddles two separate things, and it is how a person searching for a wedding date ends up frightened about their health instead. When you read about this yoga, check first which of the two the writer means.

What to do if a date falls on one

Ask three questions in this order. Can the date move, even by a day. If it cannot, is there a workable window inside the day. And is this a beginning at all, or the continuation of something already started, in which case the question does not really arise.

If it is a wedding, a business start, or a property matter, it is worth having someone look at the actual date against the actual chart rather than against a general rule. That is what a reading is for. If it is a routine day and you simply noticed the word in your panchang, you can let it pass.

The one people most often ask about in the same breath is Parigha, the nineteenth, where the tradition bars the first half of the yoga and leaves the rest of the day open. That half rule is worth reading if a date will not move.

Questions people ask

Is Vyaghata yoga bad for marriage?

For fixing the wedding date, tradition says yes, choose another day. For a person born under it, no. The date of the ceremony and the birth yoga of the bride or groom are two different questions, and only the first one is a muhurta matter.

How long does Vyaghata yoga last?

About a day, and usually not a neat one. It typically runs somewhere between nineteen and twenty seven hours because the Moon's daily motion varies. Your panchang gives the end time, and that time is the one to work from rather than sunrise to sunrise.

Is there a remedy for being born under Vyaghata yoga?

There is nothing to remedy. It is a position in a repeating cycle that one person in twenty seven shares. If something in your life is genuinely difficult, the honest place to look is the chart as a whole and the period currently running, not a single line in the panchang.
