Ashlesha is the last stretch of Cancer, so for those eight months Ketu sits in the sign of the Moon, in a nakshatra governed by Mercury.

Who feels a transit like this is a narrower group than the internet suggests. It matters most if your Moon or ascendant is in Ashlesha, in Cancer generally, or in the opposite stretch of Capricorn where Rahu will be sitting. For most other charts it is background weather.

What Ashlesha is

Ashlesha runs from 16 degrees 40 minutes to 30 degrees of Cancer, the ninth of the twenty-seven nakshatras. Its presiding deities are the Nagas, the serpent powers, and its symbol is a coiled snake. Mercury governs it. The star group behind it lies in Hydra, the water snake.

The traditional character of Ashlesha is holding. The coil is not a threat in the older material so much as a grip: something wrapped tightly around something else, protective and constricting at the same time. Texts associate it with penetrating intelligence, with the ability to read people quickly, and with an emotional attachment that does not easily let go.

That last quality is the reason this particular transit is worth writing about, because Ketu is the opposite of holding.

What Ketu does in transit

Ketu is the southern point where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. It is not a body, it always moves backwards through the zodiac, and it takes about eighteen years and seven months to go all the way round, which comes to roughly eight months in each nakshatra.

Tradition reads Ketu's effect as subtraction rather than damage. Where it goes, appetite thins. It is described as loosening a grip rather than breaking anything. Placed on a nakshatra whose whole character is grip, the classical reading is straightforward enough: the eight months are described as a period when something long held is likely to loosen, and when the loosening is more often a relief than a loss.

I want to be careful with the word likely there. That is what the tradition indicates. It is not a forecast of an event, and nobody can tell you from a nakshatra alone what in your life this touches, or whether it touches anything at all.

Two details of this particular passage

Ketu reaches Ashlesha by moving backwards out of Magha, which means it crosses the seam between Leo and Cancer, the point where a fire sign meets a water sign. Tradition treats these sign junctions as sensitive stretches and reads the crossings as the least settled part of any nodal transit. That crossing is the first week of December 2026.

The second detail is more unusual. Jupiter shares Ashlesha with Ketu for part of the passage, from 25 January 2027, when it comes back into Cancer, until 26 June 2027, when it leaves for Leo. Inside that stretch the two stay within a degree of each other from about 16 February to 30 April, and they meet exactly twice, on 1 March and again on 20 April 2027, because Jupiter turns direct between the two meetings. A Jupiter and Ketu conjunction is uncommon in any given nakshatra, and the classical readings of it are mixed rather than alarming: Jupiter is read as expanding what it touches, Ketu as emptying it, and the combination is described in the texts more as a period of revision than of gain or loss. Anyone selling you certainty about that conjunction is inventing it.

Rahu, meanwhile, sits opposite in Capricorn for the whole window, in Dhanishta for the first half and in Shravana from 10 April 2027.

Who this actually touches

Be honest with yourself about whether this transit is yours.

It is directly relevant if your Moon is in Ashlesha. That group is roughly one in twenty-seven of the population, and for them Ketu is crossing the Moon itself, which every tradition treats as significant.

It is relevant if your ascendant is Cancer or your Moon is in Cancer, because Ketu will be in the sign that governs your chart.

It is worth noting if your Moon is in Capricorn, since Rahu is on the other end of the same axis. Rahu leaves Aquarius on the day this window opens, so if you have been reading about Rahu in Aquarius, that period is ending rather than beginning.

If none of those apply, Ketu in Ashlesha will pass over your chart the way it passes over everybody's, and the correct response is to stop reading about it. The remedies attached to Ketu transits in the marketplace are mostly things to buy, which is a poor fit for a factor whose entire character is reduction.

What the older material prescribes for Ketu is simple, cheap, and unglamorous: keep a small routine and do not break it, give something away quietly, and look after animals. For Ashlesha in particular the Naga associations bring in the customary observances around Naga Panchami, which people in most parts of India already keep without needing an astrologer to tell them.

The practical counsel matters more. If a grip does loosen during these eight months, on a job, a role, a long argument inside a family, resist the urge to force it back into place immediately. Ketu periods are known for producing decisions that look obvious at the time and strange a year later. Where a choice can wait, let it wait. Where it cannot, make it on ordinary grounds, and treat the transit as context rather than as instruction.
