Almost every list of famous people born in Moola nakshatra that you will find online is unverifiable, because working out a person's nakshatra needs their birth time and most public figures have never had one published. What follows is the short honest version: what Moola actually is, why the lists cannot be trusted, and the handful of Indian figures whose birth data lets us check the calculation ourselves.

What Moola nakshatra is

Moola is the nineteenth of the twenty seven nakshatras. It occupies the first 13 degrees 20 minutes of Sagittarius, sitting close to the centre of our galaxy as seen from earth. Its name means root. Its symbol is a bunch of roots tied together, or an elephant goad, and tradition gives it Ketu as ruler and Nirriti as its presiding power.

When people say someone is "born in Moola nakshatra", they normally mean the Moon was in Moola at the moment of birth. That is the standard usage in Indian practice: your nakshatra is your Moon's nakshatra. It is what a panchang records, what Guna Milan compares, and what the traditional naming syllable is taken from.

The qualities tradition attaches to Moola are getting to the bottom of things, pulling something up by its roots, and an unsentimental willingness to dismantle what does not hold. It is also read as a nakshatra of investigation: the mind that will not accept the surface answer.

Moola also carries an old reputation for difficulty, particularly its first quarter, and I want to be direct about that. A nakshatra is not a verdict on a child. Five names turn up again and again on Moola lists: Sri Ramakrishna, Ratan Tata, Jayalalithaa, Dhirubhai Ambani and Rajinikanth. On 18 February 1836, the date traditionally given for Sri Ramakrishna, it was in Shatabhisha and then Purva Bhadrapada, and a nineteenth century date is itself open to question.

This is a calculation on published dates, not a claim about anyone's life, and if a date turns out to be wrong the calculation changes with it. But the point stands: those five names do not survive five minutes of arithmetic. The page they came from is being replaced by this one, which is the honest way to handle it.

C V Raman, born 7 November 1888. The Moon was in Moola for almost the entire day, leaving only around seven in the evening. His birth time is not reliably published, but the odds are heavily on Moola, and the calculation does not depend on a disputed hour.

Ismat Chughtai, born 21 August 1915, and Leander Paes, born 17 June 1973. In both cases the Moon was in Moola at the start of the day and moved on early: around a quarter past six in the morning for Chughtai, around three in the morning for Paes. So both appear on Moola lists, and for both the answer depends entirely on an hour nobody has published. These are honestly undetermined.

That is a much shorter list than the pages you have been reading, and it is short for a reason. I would rather give you four cases you can verify than thirty you cannot.
