Famous people born in Mula nakshatra, and why most lists are wrong

Mukesh Ambani, born 19 April 1957, and C. V. Raman, born 7 November 1888, are the strongest cases among widely known Indians for a Mula birth: on both dates the Moon spent nearly the whole day inside Mula. Most of the other names that circulate on Mula lists, including several very famous ones, cannot have been born in Mula at all on their published dates. This page shows the checked list, and then deals with the thing people actually come to Mula pages worried about.

Why so many Mula lists fail

Your janma nakshatra is the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth. The Moon crosses a nakshatra in a little under twenty five hours, so on nearly every calendar day it changes nakshatra at some hour. A date alone therefore does not fix a nakshatra. It gives you two candidates, and only the time of birth chooses between them.

The lists that go around are usually built from dates alone, and often from each other. Take the names that appear again and again on Mula pages, and compute the Moon for their published birth dates:

• M. S. Dhoni, 7 July 1981. The Moon was in Purva Phalguni before dawn and in Uttara Phalguni for the rest of the day. Mula is not possible.
• Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, 1 November 1973. Purva Ashadha, then Uttara Ashadha in the evening. Not Mula.
• Rajinikanth, 12 December 1950. Uttara Ashadha, then Shravana. Not Mula.
• Rani Mukerji, 21 March 1978. Ashlesha, then Magha. Not Mula.
• Sushmita Sen, 19 November 1975. Krittika, then Rohini. Not Mula, and eleven nakshatras away from it by the shorter count round the circle.

These are not close calls that a birth time could rescue. Mula was simply somewhere else that day. Nobody checked, because checking is slower than copying.

Mula, in plain terms

Mula is the nineteenth nakshatra. It occupies the first stretch of Sagittarius, so a Mula Moon is always a Sagittarius Moon. Its lord is Ketu. Its deity is Nirriti, associated in the old hymns with dissolution and with what lies underneath. The name means root, and the symbol usually drawn is a tied bundle of roots.

Because it begins a fire sign immediately after Jyeshtha closes a water sign, the junction between the two is what the tradition calls a gandanta, a knot where one element ends and another starts. That knot is where the whole reputation of Mula comes from, and it is a much narrower thing than the reputation suggests.

The character sketch the tradition attaches to Mula is of someone who goes to the bottom of a question rather than around it: researchers, investigators, people drawn to medicine, philosophy, law, repair work of every kind. The same texts note the cost of that temperament, which is a low tolerance for surfaces and for people who live on them, and a life that tends to arrive at its settled shape later than other people's.

That is what tradition holds. It is a description, not a forecast, and a nakshatra is one line in a chart of many.

The mool dosha worry, honestly

Families with a Mula child are often told something frightening: that the birth is harmful to the father, or to the family, and that a ritual must be done within twenty seven days. This is the single most common reason people search for Mula in the first place, and it deserves a straight answer.

What the tradition actually says is narrower than what gets repeated. The concern attaches to birth in the gandanta, the joint at the very start of Mula, and in some regional practice to the first quarter of the nakshatra. It does not attach to every birth anywhere in Mula. The customary response is a shanti ritual, done once, and in the households that follow it that is the end of the matter.

What I will not do is tell a parent that a chart has decided something about their family. It has not. A position in a chart indicates a tendency and a texture, and the tradition itself treats the remedy as closing the question rather than as holding off a fate. If somebody has told you that your child's nakshatra is dangerous, get the chart computed properly first. There are two ordinary reasons the alarm often does not survive that step. The gandanta is a narrow window at the very start of the nakshatra, a small fraction of the thirteen and a third degrees Mula covers, so a birth somewhere in Mula is not by itself a birth in the gandanta. And a nakshatra assigned from a date alone is a coin toss between two candidates, so a chart brought in as Mula sometimes turns out not to be Mula once the birth time is used.

The checked list

For each of these the Moon's position was computed for the published date of birth. Where the Moon entered or left Mula partway through the day, the hour is given so you can judge it yourself. The reckoning, stated once: Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard sidereal reckoning in India, computed on the Swiss Ephemeris, hours in Indian Standard Time. A different sidereal reckoning shifts these boundaries by roughly two to three hours, so an hour quoted without its reckoning is not checkable.

Mukesh Ambani, born 19 April 1957. The Moon entered Mula just before two in the morning and stayed there all day. Effectively settled.

C. V. Raman, born 7 November 1888. The Moon was in Mula from midnight until about seven in the evening. Any daytime birth gives Mula. That hour is an IST equivalent, since Indian Standard Time only came in in 1906, and the clock in Madras then ran about ten minutes behind it.

Alia Bhatt, born 15 March 1993. The Moon entered Mula at about a quarter past eight in the morning and remained there. Likely, unless she was born early.

Jeetendra, born 7 April 1942. Mula until about three in the afternoon. Likely for a morning birth.

Boman Irani, born 2 December 1959. Mula until about a quarter past noon.

M. F. Husain, born 17 September 1915. Mula until about noon.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, born 25 December 1924. The Moon entered Mula only at about half past three in the afternoon. Before that it was in Jyeshtha. This one genuinely hangs on the birth time, and I would not put him on either list without one.

A word that applies to all of these. Published birth times for public figures are rarely documents. They are recollections, publicity material, or times an astrologer reconstructed. The dates above are matters of public record. The hours are computed. The step from a date to a person's actual nakshatra is the step nobody can take for you without a birth time.

If the answer sits near a nakshatra change, or if someone has raised mool dosha with you, that is exactly the kind of question a reading is meant to settle, including the honest answer that the birth time you have is not good enough to settle it.

Questions people actually ask

Is Mula nakshatra bad?

No. It has a heavy reputation because it sits on a junction and because its deity is associated with dissolution, and heavy reputations travel further than mild ones. The tradition's own concern is narrow and is about a small window at the start of the nakshatra, not about the temperament of everyone born in it.

Do I have to do a shanti for a Mula birth?

That depends on where in Mula the Moon actually was, and on what your family follows. Have the chart computed first, and by someone willing to tell you that no ritual is indicated if none is. A ritual done to settle a family's mind is a reasonable thing. A ritual sold on a fright is not.

Which quarter of Mula am I in, and does it matter?

The nakshatra is divided into four quarters, and the first one is the part the gandanta concern attaches to. A properly computed kundli will tell you the quarter along with the nakshatra. If your birth time is uncertain by more than about an hour, the quarter is usually not reliable, and you should be told that rather than given a confident answer.
