Nakshatra
Bharani Nakshatra
Also in: हिन्दी
Bharani (भरणी) is the 2nd of the 27 nakshatras of Vedic astrology, spanning 13°20' - 26°40' of the zodiac in Mesha. Its lord is Shukra and its deity Yama. Symbol: Yoni / womb. It is of manushya gana, elephant yoni and madhya nadi, and its lord's Vimshottari dasha lasts 20 years.

What is Bharani nakshatra?
Bharani is the 2nd of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 13°20' to 26°40' of Mesha. Its lord is Shukra, its deity Yama, the god of death and of dharma, and its symbol is the yoni, the womb. The name means 'she who bears' or 'she who carries', and the nakshatra is the one of holding, gestation and passing over: what is carried in is also carried out. It is identified with a small, faint triangle of stars in the Ram, usually taken as 35, 39 and 41 Arietis.
Which rashi is Bharani in, and who is its lord?
Bharani lies wholly in Mesha, Mangala's sign, while its own lord is Shukra, and its lord's Vimshottari dasha lasts 20 years. Shukra also rules Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha.
A Moon in Bharani at birth means life begins in Shukra's dasha. The balance depends on how far the Moon had travelled: early in the nakshatra most of the twenty years remain, late in it only a year or two.
What are the four padas of Bharani?
Each pada covers 3°20'. The four padas fall in the navamsas of Simha, Kanya, Tula and Vrishchika. The navamsa (D9) is the chart in which each pada becomes a sign, and the texts read it for marriage and the deeper strength of a graha. Bharani does not cross a sign boundary: all four padas are in Mesha. The third pada falls in Tula, Shukra's own navamsa, and the fourth in Vrishchika, Mangala's, so the two rulers of the nakshatra each own one quarter of it. Bharani is not a gandamool nakshatra.
What does tradition say about people born in Bharani?
The texts describe Bharani natives as determined and capable of carrying a load others put down. Varahamihira's verse calls them resolute, truthful, healthy, skilful and happy. Tradition holds that Yama gives a sense of duty and of consequences while Shukra adds taste, warmth and strong likes. Manushya gana is said to give a practical, human temper, neither saintly nor harsh.
Which careers are traditionally linked with Bharani?
Tradition links Bharani with work at life's thresholds: midwifery and obstetrics, care of the dying, funeral and estate work. Yama as the lord of dharma adds law, courts and enforcement, and Shukra adds the arts, fashion, entertainment and hospitality. These are the nakshatra's associations, not a career prediction. What someone does for a living is read from the 10th house, its lord and the running dasha.
What does Bharani mean for marriage and kundli matching?
For Ashtakoota matching Bharani is manushya gana, elephant yoni (male) and Madhya nadi. Manushya agrees fully with manushya, is accepted with deva and scores lowest against rakshasa. Nadi carries 8 of the 36 points, gana 6 and yoni 4. Both Moons in Madhya nadi is the classical concern known as nadi dosha; the texts list exceptions to it, and it is not the whole match.
The score compares two Moons and nothing more. Marriage itself is read from the 7th house, its lord, Shukra and the dashas, and here Shukra is also the nakshatra's lord, so its condition matters twice.
Which syllables belong to Bharani?
The traditional syllables for the four padas are Li, Lu, Le and Lo, in order. A name beginning with the syllable of the Moon's pada is the custom.
What does Bharani not tell you?
Yama's name makes some people read Bharani as a nakshatra of death. It is not a forecast of anything, and it says nothing about lifespan, which no single factor can. Nor does it tell you whether Shukra is strong, which house Mesha occupies, or which dasha you are in now. Twins born minutes apart can share Bharani and still live different lives, because the ascendant and the houses move much faster than the Moon. I read the nakshatra as one line of the whole chart.
