What is Jyeshtha nakshatra?

Jyeshtha is the 18th of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 226°40' to 240°00', the last stretch of Vrishchika. Its lord is Budha, its deity is Indra, and its symbol is a circular amulet or earring, in some lists an umbrella. The name means "the eldest" or "the senior", and its main star is Antares, the red heart of the Scorpion.

Indra is the king of the gods, the one who wins the throne and must keep defending it.

Which rashi is Jyeshtha in, and who is its lord?

Jyeshtha lies wholly in Vrishchika, Mangala's fixed water sign, and is ruled by Budha. Its lord's Vimshottari dasha lasts 17 years. Budha rules Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati, and all three close a water sign, which is why all three are counted gandamool.

A Moon in Jyeshtha at birth means life begins in the Budha dasha. The balance left depends on how far the Moon had travelled, so a Moon near 240°00' leaves very little of the 17 years, and the Ketu dasha comes next.

What are the four padas of Jyeshtha?

A pada is a quarter of 3°20', and each falls in a navamsa, the ninth-part chart used to judge strength and marriage. The four padas fall in the navamsas of Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha and Meena, and all four sit in the Vrishchika rashi.

Jyeshtha is one of the six gandamool nakshatras. In common practice the whole nakshatra gets the label, but the gandanta zone proper is the fourth pada, 236°40' to 240°00', where Vrishchika, a water sign, meets Dhanu, a fire sign, and several authorities narrow it to the last moments before that boundary. The texts attach their cautions, mostly about elder relatives, to that join, so the tradition is narrower than it is usually made to sound.

What does tradition say about people born in Jyeshtha?

The texts describe Jyeshtha natives as able to carry authority and responsibility for others, as Indra does, and often as the one who takes charge in a family whatever their birth order. Budha is said to add quickness with words and plans. Rakshasa gana is said to give independence and a fierce streak when crossed. Tradition holds these as tendencies, not a description of any one life.

Which careers are traditionally linked with Jyeshtha?

Tradition ties Jyeshtha to command and protection: administration, management, police, defence and security, and leadership in any organisation. Budha adds writing, accounts, negotiation and strategy, and the Vrishchika setting adds investigation and research into hidden things. The 10th house and its lord decide the actual work, not the birth nakshatra.

What does Jyeshtha mean for marriage and kundli matching?

Jyeshtha is of rakshasa gana, deer yoni (male) and aadi nadi. In Ashtakoota matching nadi carries 8 points, gana 6 and yoni 4. Rakshasa gana matches rakshasa fully; with deva or manushya it is the classical concern. The deer yoni pairs best with deer, and Anuradha is its female counterpart, so the two neighbours score well on yoni even though their ganas differ. Two aadi nadi Moons score zero on nadi, the nadi dosha, and the texts give exceptions.

Matching compares the two Moons. The marriage itself is read from the 7th house, its lord, Shukra and the dashas.

What does Jyeshtha not tell you?

Jyeshtha's reputation is mostly its gandamool label, and the label alone tells you little. Whether a birth falls in the fourth pada, let alone its last moments, depends on the Moon's exact degree, which needs a reliable birth time; a few minutes can move it. Beyond that, Jyeshtha says where the Moon was and nothing about the ascendant, the houses or the dashas to come. Two people born in Jyeshtha, one near its start and one at its very end, sit in different navamsas and different stretches of the Budha dasha. I read it from the whole chart.
