What is Shatabhisha nakshatra?

Shatabhisha is the 24th of the 27 nakshatras. It spans 306°40' to 320°00' of the sidereal zodiac, wholly inside Kumbha. Its lord is Rahu, its deity is Varuna, the Vedic keeper of the waters and of the moral order, and its symbol is an empty circle. The name is read as "a hundred healers" (shata, a hundred; bhishaj, a physician), and also as "a hundred stars", for the faint scatter of stars around it in Aquarius.

Which rashi is Shatabhisha in, and who is its lord?

All four padas of Shatabhisha sit in Kumbha, the sign Shani rules, while the nakshatra itself belongs to Rahu. Rahu also rules Ardra and Swati, the other two nakshatras of its line, and the texts give the three a family likeness: restless, independent, drawn to the new and the hidden.

Its lord's Vimshottari dasha lasts 18 years. Someone whose Moon is in Shatabhisha is born into Rahu's dasha, and how much of those 18 years remains at birth depends on how far the Moon had moved through the nakshatra: near 306°40' almost all of it, near 320°00' very little. Guru's dasha of 16 years follows.

What are the four padas of Shatabhisha?

Each pada is 3°20' wide and falls in a navamsa, the ninth-part sign the texts use to read the finer grain of a placement, and marriage in particular. The four padas fall in the navamsas of Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha and Meena. The third pada, from 313°20', is vargottama: a graha there sits in Kumbha in both the birth chart and the navamsa, which tradition counts as added steadiness. Shatabhisha is not one of the six gandamool nakshatras, so no birth caution of that kind applies to it.

What does tradition say about people born in Shatabhisha?

Tradition holds that the Shatabhisha-born are private, self-reliant and not easy to read, with a liking for study and for solving things alone. Varuna sees what is hidden and binds those who break their word, so the nakshatra is linked with secrets, truthfulness and a strict private code. The empty circle is read as a boundary: a space kept around the self that few are let into. Its rakshasa gana is said to give an independent, sometimes blunt temperament that does not bend easily to custom.

These are descriptions of a texture, not a verdict on anyone's life.

Which careers are traditionally linked with Shatabhisha?

Because of the hundred healers, Shatabhisha is the nakshatra most often tied to medicine: doctors, pharmacists, nurses, people who prepare medicines or manage long treatment. Rahu adds research, technology and electrical work, Varuna adds work around water and shipping, and the old lists include astronomy and astrology, which suit its solitary, investigating temper.

None of this assigns anyone a job. Work is read from the 10th house, its lord and the dashas running when a career is chosen; the birth nakshatra only colours how a person goes about it.

What does Shatabhisha mean for marriage and kundli matching?

Three of the eight Ashtakoota factors come straight from the nakshatra. Shatabhisha is of rakshasa gana; gana carries 6 points, and a rakshasa pair scores in full, while a deva or manushya partner scores low. Its yoni is the horse, female, which pairs best with Ashwini's male horse; yoni carries 4 points. Its nadi is aadi, and nadi carries 8: two aadi partners score nothing there, the classical nadi dosha, although the texts list exceptions.

People ask about Shatabhisha with Revati. Revati is deva gana, elephant yoni and antya nadi, so the nadis differ and score the full 8, while the ganas are a poor fit. That settles three kootas out of eight, not the match. The score compares two Moons; the marriage itself is read from each chart's 7th house, its lord, Shukra and the dashas.

What does Shatabhisha not tell you?

It does not tell you that you will become a doctor, live alone or keep secrets. Thousands of people are born with the Moon in Shatabhisha every month, and Rahu's long dasha at the start of life lands very differently depending on where Rahu sits and what it rules in each chart. A Shatabhisha Moon in the 7th house and one in the 10th describe different people. The birth time decides the nakshatra and the pada, so check it before reading anything into either.
