The trades tradition puts under Saturn are the slow, heavy, structural ones: land and construction, iron and steel, mining and fuel, machinery, agriculture, labour and staffing, waste and sanitation, law, government service, and the care of the old. • Elder care, hospice work, long-term institutional service. Saturn signifies old age and endurance.

You will notice these are unfashionable. That is the point. Saturn does not signify the business that is written about this year. He signifies the business that is still there in twenty years, run by the person who did not get bored.

How a chart actually points this way

Four things are worth looking at, and none of them alone decides anything.

Saturn's relationship with the tenth house. The tenth is the house of action and public work. Saturn sitting there, aspecting it, or ruling it puts his signature on the working life.

Saturn's own condition. Saturn is comfortable in Capricorn and Aquarius, strong in Libra, and weak in Aries. A weak Saturn does not stop you entering these trades. It usually shows up as impatience with the very slowness the trade demands, which is worth knowing before you commit capital to it.

Where that temperament is present, a Saturn trade tends to work, chart or no chart. Where it is absent, no placement will make a person enjoy a decade of unglamorous compounding. I have watched people force this and it is expensive.

What tradition offers when a Saturn business is struggling

Honest framing first: a remedy is not a business plan. If a construction business is losing money because of a cash flow problem, the cash flow problem is the problem.

Within the tradition, the measures associated with Saturn are consistent and inexpensive: giving to workers, labourers and the elderly, service rather than purchase, discipline in daily routine, and restraint on the corner cutting that Saturn is said to punish hardest. It should never be worn without the chart being read first, and never in a hurry.

What Saturn is said to reward is not devotion. It is fair dealing with people who work for you, and keeping your word when it costs you something.

Saturn has been made frightening by people who profit from frightening you. In the tradition he is the graha of consequence: he is difficult for those who take shortcuts and steady for those who do not. He also gives late. Tradition is consistent that Saturn's results come after maturity rather than early, and careers under him often turn well after the person had privately decided it was not going to happen.

Does a strong Saturn mean I should not do a creative business?

No. It means that whatever you do will reward structure, repetition and long horizons. Plenty of Saturn charts belong to people in creative trades who succeeded through sheer volume of unglamorous work rather than through a lucky break.
