What a Venus transit actually does, read from your rashi
Venus moves through a sign in about four weeks. That single fact is why a Venus transit article pinned to a particular year is out of date almost as soon as it is written, and why the ones you find are usually recycled. A Venus transit from 2023 tells you nothing about today.
What is worth learning once is how to read a Venus transit from your own rashi, because then any month's transit is readable without waiting for somebody to publish a forecast. That is what this page is for.
One clarification first, because the phrase is ambiguous. Astronomers use "transit of Venus" for the rare event where Venus crosses the face of the Sun as seen from Earth. That happened in 2004 and 2012 and does not happen again until 2117. In astrology the word simply means where Venus is in the sky at the moment, and that changes every few weeks.
What Venus stands for
Shukra in the Vedic system is the significator of marriage and the spouse, of comfort, taste, beauty, art, vehicles, and the pleasant side of money, the part you spend rather than the part you count. It rules Vrishabha and Tula. Tradition holds it exalted in Meena and at its weakest in Kanya, and treats it as friendly with Shani and Budha and uneasy with the Sun and Moon.
Two things about its motion matter more than most forecasts admit.
Combustion. Venus never travels far from the Sun in the sky. Every so often it comes close enough that tradition calls it combust, and reads its significations as dimmed for those weeks. This is ordinary and recurring, not a crisis. A panchang will tell you when it is happening.
Retrograde. Roughly every nineteen months Venus appears to move backwards for about six weeks. The last such stretch was in the spring of 2025 and the next falls late in 2026. Older texts read those weeks as a time when matters of the heart, of taste and of money come back around to be reconsidered rather than begun. People revisit an old relationship, an old purchase, an old design decision. That is a description of a tendency, not an instruction.
Read it from your moon sign
Count from your rashi, the moon sign, not the sun sign a newspaper column uses. If you do not know it, a free kundli will tell you in a minute. Then find which house Venus is currently sitting in, counting your moon sign as the 1st, and read that line.
Every line below is what tradition reads Venus in that house as, not a forecast. These are leanings for four weeks, and the section after this one explains how little that is worth on its own.
1st. Ease with your own appearance and manner, a lighter month, people tending to respond more readily than usual.
2nd. Family, speech, food and money. Tradition treats this as one of Venus's more comfortable positions and connects it with spending on the household.
3rd. Communication, siblings, short journeys, and effort that comes easily. Older texts favour it for anything that needs persuasion.
4th. Home, mother, property, vehicles. The classic month for the house getting attention, a purchase for it, or simply wanting to be in it.
5th. Romance, children, creative work, and the pleasure of learning something. Where the older texts are most positive about Venus.
6th. Service, competition, debts and health. Venus in a difficult house tends to mean pleasant things costing more than expected, and expenses on comfort.
7th. Partnership and marriage directly. This is the month people notice, and it is the one most over-promised. It is four weeks, and it is shared by a twelfth of the world.
8th. Joint money, the hidden, the inherited. Tradition is cautious here, mostly about transactions and confidences rather than anything dramatic.
9th. Fortune, teachers, travel and belief. Usually described as an easy, expansive stretch.
10th. Work and public standing. Tradition reads it as a friendlier stretch for reputation, and favours work involving people over work involving material.
11th. Gains, networks, the people who bring you things. Often the month income moves without the role changing.
12th. Expense, foreign places, rest, and what happens in private. Tradition connects Venus in the 12th with comfort taken away from the centre of things.
The limit worth being honest about
Venus spends four weeks in a sign. Every person on earth who shares your moon sign gets the same transit at the same time. For any one rashi that is a twelfth of the country, more than a hundred million people in India. A factor shared by that many people can shade a month. It cannot decide a marriage, a proposal, or whether a relationship survives.
This matters because Venus transits are what most marriage-timing content is built on, and it is the weakest foundation available. In a chart, marriage timing is read from the 7th house and its lord, from Venus's own condition at birth, and above all from the running mahadasha, which is measured in years, not weeks. A transit can say when inside a favourable stretch something is likely to come to a head. It cannot create the stretch.
So when a Venus transit is described as bringing love to four signs and trouble to four others, the arithmetic alone should tell you it is filler. Read the house it falls in from your rashi, take it as weather for the month, and look at your chart for anything larger. Moon sign compatibility and the 2026 and 2027 planetary transits are the sensible next reads.
Questions people ask
How long does Venus stay in one sign? About 23 to 30 days most of the time. It can be much longer, up to a few months, when Venus slows down around a retrograde stretch, because it crosses the same degrees three times. A panchang gives the exact ingress dates for the year you are in.
Is a Venus transit good for marriage? It is a small factor. Tradition treats Venus in the 7th or 5th from your rashi as favourable weeks for meeting people and for existing relationships being easy, and no more than that. Marriage timing is read from the chart's own structure and the running mahadasha. If someone tells you a four week transit will get you married, they are describing a horoscope column, not a kundli.
What does a combust Venus mean? It means Venus is close enough to the Sun for tradition to read its significations as dimmed for that period. Practically it is treated as weeks when matters of comfort, art and relationship do not get the clear air they usually get. It happens on a regular cycle, it passes on its own, and it is not something anyone needs to buy a remedy for.
