Vish yoga and marriage, without the fear

Also in: हिन्दी

Vish yoga is the name given to the Moon and Saturn sitting together in one house of the kundli. What tradition reads from it is a mind that carries weight: slow to trust, slow to show what it feels, and inclined to expect the difficult version of things. Applied to marriage, that shows up as delay, as a partner who is serious or older, and as a relationship that warms slowly rather than starting bright.

What it is not is a marriage that fails. The word vish means poison, and that word has done more damage to more people than the placement ever has. Let me take it apart properly.

What the combination actually is

The Moon in tradition is the mind: mood, comfort, the sense of being at ease or not. Saturn is time, weight, restriction, and the long slow work of things. Put them in the same house and each takes some of the other's colour. The mind acquires Saturn's caution and Saturn's patience, and also Saturn's habit of expecting less.

Some astrologers apply the name more widely, to Saturn aspecting the Moon, or to the Moon placed in a part of the sky ruled by Saturn. Others reserve it strictly for the conjunction. And confusingly, the same name is used in the panchang for an entirely separate thing, a combination of the weekday and the lunar day that is avoided when fixing a time to begin something. If someone has told you that you have vish yoga, it is worth asking which of these they mean, because they are not the same subject.

You will also find the name used loosely for Saturn simply sitting in the seventh house of the kundli. That is not the classical definition of vish yoga, and it is worth separating, because Saturn in the seventh house is its own subject with a far better reputation in the texts than the word poison suggests. Tradition reads it as a delayer, yes, and also as a placement that tends to produce a marriage which settles late and then holds. If that is the placement you actually have, the reading is about patience, not about damage.

Older writing also calls the Moon and Saturn combination Punarphoo, a name that carries the sense of again, and connects it with delay and with matters that have to be taken up a second time. It is the more useful of the two names, because it describes a pattern instead of pronouncing a verdict.

How common it is

The Moon takes about two and a quarter days to cross a sign, and goes right around the zodiac in a little over twenty seven days. Saturn sits in one sign for roughly two and a half years. By simple counting, about one birth in twelve has the Moon in the same sign as Saturn.

One in twelve. That is a very large number of people, living every kind of married life there is, including long and contented ones. Hold that number next to the word poison and you will see how out of proportion the fear around this combination has become.

What tradition holds it does to marriage

Four things come up repeatedly, in the texts and in ordinary practice.

Delay. This is the most consistent reading in the texts. Tradition reads marriage as coming later here than it does for siblings and friends, sometimes considerably later. Saturn's method is described as withholding first and then giving something that lasts.

Things having to be done twice. An engagement that is postponed and then held. A match that is nearly settled and then falls through, followed by another one that works. This is the Punarphoo quality, and it is worth knowing in advance because it turns a frightening experience into an expected one.

A serious partner. Often older, or older in bearing. Responsible, undemonstrative, not given to romance as performance. Tradition reads Saturn's involvement in the mind as drawing the person towards weight rather than sparkle.

Slowness to feel loved. This is the part I think matters most and is written about least. The difficulty in these marriages is usually not the partner's behaviour. It is that the person carrying this combination does not easily register affection when it is given. Reassurance goes in, and does not stay.

None of that is a broken marriage. It is a slower and heavier one, which is a different thing, and a workable one.

What softens it

Tradition names several conditions that are held to reduce the weight considerably, and any competent reading will check all of them before saying a word about vish yoga.

The aspect of Jupiter on the Moon or on the pair. This is the strongest of the mitigations in the classical view, and it is common.

A Moon that is strong in its own right: waxing, in the bright half of the lunar month, or placed in a sign that suits it.

Saturn in one of its own signs, Capricorn or Aquarius, where it is at home and behaves far better than the general description suggests.

A wide separation in degrees. Two planets in the same sign but twenty five degrees apart are not doing to each other what two planets three degrees apart are doing.

If several of these are present, the combination is present in name and not much in effect. This is exactly the sort of thing an automatic report will not check and a person will.

What it is not

It is not Sade Sati, which is a transit, the roughly seven and a half year stretch when Saturn passes through the sign before your Moon, your Moon's own sign, and the one after. Sade Sati comes and goes. This combination is fixed in the birth chart. People conflate them constantly and then attribute everything happening in a hard year to the wrong cause.

It is not a divorce indication, and I would not read it as one in any chart.

It is not an indication about children. Pages on this subject sometimes extend the fear to infertility and childlessness. There is no basis for reading that from the Moon and Saturn together, it causes real distress to people already going through something difficult, and I will not repeat it.

And it is not a reason to put on a blue sapphire. That stone is prescribed casually all over the internet for anything involving Saturn, it is the one stone traditional practice itself treats with the most caution, and nobody should be wearing it because a web page mentioned their name and a yoga in the same sentence.

And it is not a reason to refuse a match. If this combination were disqualifying, one person in twelve would be unmarriageable, which is plainly not the world we live in.

What actually helps

I will keep this to what follows from the reading rather than from anything I cannot stand behind.

The heaviness described here lives mostly in mood and in communication, and both of those are things a person can work on directly. Regular sleep and a steady routine do more for a Saturn-weighted Moon than most people expect, because the placement is describing a mind that suffers disproportionately from disorder.

Say the thing rather than assuming it is known. The characteristic failure here is silence that both people read as coldness.

And expect the delay instead of fighting it. Much of the pain around this combination comes from measuring against a timetable that was never going to apply. Traditional practice attaches various observances to Saturn, and people find them steadying. I offer them as practice, not as a mechanism, and I will not sell you one.

Whether this combination is doing anything at all in your own chart is a question with a real answer, and it comes from checking the softening conditions and the running periods one by one. You can ask for that.

Common questions

Does vish yoga delay marriage?

Delay is the most consistent traditional reading of the Moon and Saturn together, and it is the part of the description the texts state most firmly. It is not an exact number of years and it is not certain. It also depends heavily on whether Jupiter aspects the pair and on what condition each planet is in.

Does vish yoga cause divorce?

No, and I would not read it that way in any chart. It describes a heavy, cautious, slow-warming temperament in the person, which is a pressure inside a marriage rather than a prediction about it. Separation is judged, when it is judged at all, from many factors across both charts, and a chart indicates conditions rather than decides events.

Can vish yoga be cancelled?

Tradition names several conditions that reduce it substantially: Jupiter's aspect, a strong or waxing Moon, Saturn in its own sign, and a wide gap in degrees between the two. Astrologers use the word cancelled loosely here. What is honest to say is that the combination can be present in name while doing very little, and that this is common enough to be checked before anyone is told they have a problem.
