Famous people and their nakshatra, checked against the actual birth dates

Most lists of famous people born under a given nakshatra are guesswork, and it is easy to show why. The Moon crosses one nakshatra in a little over twenty four hours, so it usually changes nakshatra part way through any given day, at a particular clock time. Unless a person's birth time is genuinely on record, their nakshatra cannot be settled from the date alone.

Put a number on that and the problem is stark. Only about one date in twenty four passes without the Moon changing nakshatra at all. Every other date has a changeover somewhere inside it, so a list built from dates alone is right about some of its entries and wrong about the rest, with no way for the reader to tell which is which.

Below is what can be said honestly for the three nakshatras people ask about most on this site. Everything is computed with the Lahiri ayanamsa from the publicly published date, and where the time decides the answer I have given you the time.

Ardra

Ardra sits in Gemini, its symbol is a teardrop, and Rudra is its presiding deity. Tradition associates it with the storm that clears the air: sharp intelligence, an appetite for taking things apart, restlessness, and a life that tends to include one or two hard breaks that reset everything after them. The unkind versions of this description that circulate online, all grief and destruction, are a distortion. Ardra is difficult in the way a demanding teacher is difficult.

Sam Manekshaw, born 3 April 1914 in Amritsar, is the cleanest example available. On that date the Moon was in Ardra for the entire day, so his nakshatra holds whatever his birth time was.

R K Narayan, born 10 October 1906 in Madras, is Ardra if he was born before about half past one in the afternoon, and Punarvasu after that. His birth time is not something I can source, so the honest answer is that it is one or the other.

Anuradha

Anuradha sits in Scorpio and its lord is Saturn, with Mitra, the deity of friendship and contract, presiding. The tradition reads it as the nakshatra of people who build things with others and stay: loyal, patient, capable of long effort far from home, and often more devoted than the people around them realise. The old texts give it the ability to hold a position through a long stretch of difficulty, which is a quieter kind of power than the internet version of it.

Kapil Dev, born 6 January 1959 in Chandigarh, has the Moon in Anuradha for most of that day. It moves into Jyeshtha only around seven in the evening, so unless he was born late at night, Anuradha is his.

Ravi Shankar, born 7 April 1920 in Varanasi, is the mirror case. The Moon entered Anuradha at about half past three that morning, so almost the whole day belongs to it.

A P J Abdul Kalam, born 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, appears on every Anuradha list on the internet. On that date the Moon left Anuradha at about twenty five past seven in the morning. If he was born early, the lists are right. If he was born later in the day, his nakshatra is Jyeshtha and the lists are wrong. I have not found a reliable published birth time for him, so I do not claim either.

Uttara Bhadrapada

Uttara Bhadrapada sits in Pisces, and its deity, Ahir Budhnya, is the serpent of the deep. Tradition reads it as one of the steadiest of the twenty seven: patient, self contained, generous without display, comfortable with solitude, and slow to anger in a way that other people come to rely on. It is one of the four fixed nakshatras, which is why it appears on the preferred list for wedding dates.

P V Narasimha Rao, born 28 June 1921, had the Moon in Uttara Bhadrapada across that whole day, so his case does not depend on a birth time at all.

Hema Malini, born 16 October 1948, is close to the same case with one caveat worth stating precisely, since precision is the whole argument of this page. The Moon entered Uttara Bhadrapada about two minutes past midnight and stayed there for the rest of the day, so only a birth in the first two minutes of that date would be Purva Bhadrapada.

Rahul Dravid, born 11 January 1973, is Uttara Bhadrapada if he was born before about half past two in the afternoon, and Revati after that.

Why a birth time matters this much

People are surprised that a nakshatra can turn on the hour. The arithmetic is simple. Twenty seven nakshatras divide the zodiac, the Moon takes about twenty seven and a third days to go round, so it holds one nakshatra for roughly a day and one quarter of that nakshatra, a pada, for about six hours. Being born at nine in the morning rather than six in the evening can move you a full nakshatra, and it will nearly always move your pada.

This is the same reason I ask for a birth time before writing anything for a client, and why I say so plainly when a time is approximate. A reading built on a guessed time is a reading about somebody else.

What a Moon nakshatra actually tells you

Roughly one person in twenty seven shares your Moon nakshatra. In a country of this size that is tens of millions of people, which should tell you how much weight one nakshatra can carry on its own.

What it does describe well is the texture of the mind: what settles a person, what unsettles them, how they take in an event before they have decided what to think about it. That is genuinely useful and it is where the nakshatra earns its place. Everything else about a life, the work, the marriage, the money, the timing of the turns, comes from the rest of the chart and from the periods running through it. When someone tells you a nakshatra guarantees fame or wealth, they are describing one line of a page and calling it the book.

Can I find my nakshatra from my birth date alone?

Sometimes, and you will not know which times those are without checking. If the Moon stayed in one nakshatra across your whole birth date, the date is enough. If it changed, you need the time. Enter your details in the free kundli and it will tell you.

Why do different websites give the same celebrity different nakshatras?

Usually because they are working from the date alone and rounding to whichever nakshatra covered the morning, or copying an older list without checking. Occasionally it is a genuine difference of ayanamsa, but the boundary problem explains most of it.

Does sharing a nakshatra with a famous person mean anything?

It means you share one feature of one part of the chart. It is a pleasant thing to know and it is not a prediction. Two people with the same Moon nakshatra can have almost nothing else in common in their charts.
