Gaja Kesari yoga is present when Jupiter occupies the first, fourth, seventh or tenth house counted from the Moon's sign. That is the entire rule, and you can check it yourself in two minutes if you know where your Moon and your Jupiter sit.

The second thing to know is the number that most pages leave out. Jupiter can be in any of twelve positions from the Moon, and four of them count. Find the sign your Moon is in. Count that sign as one, then count forward. The signs that land on one, four, seven and ten are the angles from the Moon, the four positions a chart calls kendras. If Jupiter is in any of those signs, the yoga is present.

The pairing is meant to suggest a bearing that is both weighty and commanding, and the classical descriptions run along those lines: tradition holds that the person is well spoken, held in regard, generous, of steady judgement, and that the good name lasts rather than flares.

Notice what the old texts emphasise. Regard, judgement, reputation. Not a bank balance. The translation of this yoga into a promise of wealth is a modern commercial addition, and it is the reason so many people arrive disappointed, having been told they had a fortune yoga and finding no fortune in it.

What actually decides whether it does anything

Since a third of the world has this combination, the presence of it is nearly meaningless on its own. What a practitioner looks at is the condition of the two planets involved.

Jupiter's own state. Jupiter is at its strongest in Cancer, comfortable in Sagittarius and Pisces which it owns, and at its weakest in Capricorn. A Jupiter that is weak in its own right forms a weak yoga, whatever the geometry says.

Whether Jupiter is close to the Sun. A planet within a few degrees of the Sun is said to be burnt up, and a burnt Jupiter in an angle from the Moon is a yoga on paper more than in life. A burnt Jupiter is one common reason a chart carries the combination and the person has never felt it.

The Moon's brightness. The Moon near the full moon is treated as strong and the Moon near the new moon as weak. A dark Moon at one end of the yoga thins it considerably.
