Gajakesari yoga, and how to check whether you actually have it

Also in: हिन्दी

Gajakesari yoga forms when the Moon stands in the first, fourth, seventh or tenth position counted from Jupiter, in either direction. That is the whole definition. You can check it in a minute with a chart in front of you, and roughly one chart in three has it, which is the first thing most pages about it leave out.

It is a genuine combination and the older texts speak well of it. It is also routinely oversold. Having it is common. Having it in a form that does anything is not.

What the combination is

Jupiter is the chart's teacher and its widener: judgement, learning, generosity, the sense of what things are worth. The Moon is the mind and the mood, how a person actually feels their way through a day.

When those two stand at right angles to each other in the chart, the classical reading is that the mind and the judgement work together rather than pulling apart. That is what the name is pointing at. Gaja is the elephant, kesari the lion, and the picture is of steadiness carrying strength rather than either one alone.

In a life, that usually shows up as a person whose good opinion others seek. Not loudness, and not necessarily wealth. Standing. The sense that this is someone whose word is worth having.

Why so many people have it

Count the positions. From Jupiter, the Moon can be in any of twelve places, and four of them make this combination. So around a third of charts have it in the simple form.

That number is worth holding on to, because it is the honest answer to "does Gajakesari yoga make you rich". If a third of the world had a wealth-guaranteeing combination, we would notice.

What the texts actually claim for it is more modest and more interesting: respect, a reputation that outlasts the person, sound judgement, and the ability to keep learning. Those are real things. They are not the same as money.

When it is strong and when it is only technically there

This is the part a calculator cannot do for you, and it is the only part that matters.

The condition of the Moon. A Moon with almost no light in it, born within a day or two of the new Moon, is a weak Moon, and half of this combination is then weak. The same combination with a full Moon is a different thing entirely.

The condition of Jupiter. Jupiter in Cancer or Sagittarius or Pisces is strong. Jupiter in Capricorn is at its weakest point in the circle. Gajakesari formed by a Jupiter in that state promises far less than the phrase suggests.

Where the pair sits. The combination formed in an angle of the chart, and especially in the 10th, does far more than the same combination formed in the 6th, 8th or 12th, which are the parts of the chart where results come slowly and with friction.

What else is touching them. Saturn or Rahu with a hand on either planet changes the reading. Nothing in a chart is read alone.

Whether the period ever arrives. A combination gives its results during the stretch of life when the planets forming it are the ones running. Some people carry a strong Gajakesari and reach the years when it speaks in their fifties.

So the honest sequence is: is it there, is it made of strong planets, is it well placed, is it left alone by the difficult planets, and when does it get its turn. Five questions, not one.

Checking your own chart

You need a real chart, which means the date, the town and the clock time of birth. The free kundli here will draw it for you without asking for an email address.

Then do this. Find Jupiter. Count houses forward to the Moon, starting at Jupiter's own house as one. If you land on 1, 4, 7 or 10, the combination is present.

That tells you it exists. It does not tell you what it is worth in your chart, because that is the five questions above, and answering them is what a reading is for.

The mirror image of this question is worth reading too: a planet sitting in its weakest sign is not always weak, and the conditions that lift it are set out in neecha bhanga raja yoga.

What I would not do with it

I would not buy anything on the strength of it. Gemstones sold to "activate" Gajakesari yoga are sold on the assumption that you will not count how common the combination is.

I would not treat it as a promise. The best of the classical descriptions of it are about character and standing. A life is made of a whole chart running through a whole set of years, and one combination in it is one line.

And I would not be disappointed if you do not have it. Two thirds of people do not, including a great many people whose judgement everyone around them trusts. There is no single combination whose absence closes anything.

Questions people ask

How do I know if I have Gajakesari yoga?

Draw your chart, find Jupiter, and count to the Moon starting from Jupiter's own house as one. If the Moon falls on 1, 4, 7 or 10, the combination is present. You need your birth time for this, because the Moon moves about one house every two and a half days and an approximate time can put it in the wrong place.

Does Gajakesari yoga make a person wealthy?

The classical texts attach reputation, judgement and respect to it rather than wealth. About a third of charts contain it in the basic form, so on its own it cannot explain anybody's fortune. Whether it does anything in a particular chart depends on the strength of Jupiter and the Moon and where in the chart they sit.

Is Gajakesari yoga cancelled if Jupiter is weak?

Not cancelled, but reduced, and sometimes reduced to almost nothing. A Jupiter at its weakest point in the circle, or a Moon with very little light, gives a combination that is technically present and practically quiet. This is why a yes or no answer from a calculator is not the same as a reading.
