Mars in marriage, and what Mangal Dosha really means
Mars in the marriage picture is read as heat: drive, physical energy, temper, the willingness to protect and the willingness to fight. Where Venus is the softness in a marriage, Mars is the friction and the force behind it. A marriage with no Mars at all is not peaceful, it is flat.
The reason most people arrive at this question is Mangal Dosha, and the reason they arrive frightened is that somebody told them their chart carries it and stopped there. So let me start with the honest position on that, and then explain what Mars actually does.
Mangal Dosha, in plain terms
Mangal Dosha, also called Manglik, is the name given to Mars occupying certain houses in the chart, counted from the ascendant: the first, fourth, seventh, eighth and twelfth. Some lineages count from the moon or from Venus as well, which is one reason two astrologers can disagree about whether the same person has it.
Three things families are rarely told.
It is common. Mars occupies one of those five houses in a very large share of charts. This is not a rare affliction, and once the count from the moon or Venus is added the share is larger still.
Tradition itself provides for it to be cancelled. Classical practice lists a number of conditions under which the dosha is considered nullified, including Mars being in his own sign or strongly placed, certain age thresholds, and the well known case where both people carry it. An astrologer who reports the dosha without checking whether it stands is doing half the job.
It was never meant to be read alone. Guna Milan and the rest of chart matching look at temperament, family life, health and timing together. A single factor deciding a marriage is not tradition, it is laziness, and it has broken engagements that should not have been broken.
I will not tell you the dosha is meaningless. What it indicates, when it genuinely stands, is a marriage with more heat in it: quicker arguments, stronger physical needs, a lower tolerance for being managed. That is worth knowing before the wedding rather than after. It is not a prediction of divorce or of harm to a spouse, and using it to frighten a family is one of the worst habits in this profession.
What Mars actually governs in a marriage
Read the chart rather than the label and Mars is telling you about four practical things.
How anger moves. Fast and loud and over, or slow and quiet and stored. Two people who anger differently need to know it about each other, and this is the single most useful thing Mars tells you.
How needs get voiced. Mars asks directly. A strong Mars in the marriage picture usually means someone who says what they want, which many families read as difficult and which is usually easier to live with than the alternative.
Physical energy and appetite. Tradition is straightforward about this and there is no reason to be coy. Mismatch here is a real source of marital unhappiness and it is rarely discussed at the matching stage.
Drive brought into the household. The one who pushes, decides, and gets things done. In a marriage where neither chart has that, decisions drift.
Mars and Venus together
The pair matters more than either alone. Venus signifies affection, tenderness and pleasure. Mars signifies desire and force. When both are working, a marriage has warmth and a spine. When Mars dominates, the relationship can run on friction and reconciliation. When Venus dominates without Mars, it can be gentle and quietly unresolved, because nobody ever raises the difficult thing.
There is no ideal ratio, and anybody who gives you one is inventing it. What a chart comparison can honestly show is where the two of you differ in this, so that the difference is named rather than discovered in year three.
Timing, which is the part that helps
A placement is standing weather. What changes is timing: a Mars period, and Mars transiting the marriage houses, are when this heat is actually in the room. A marriage crisis that turns out to be a passing transit reads very differently once the family knows it is passing, and knowing that changes how people behave in it. That is the practical value of a chart. If you want that read for two charts rather than one, that is what a reading covers.
What tradition offers, honestly framed
The Mars practices are inexpensive: restraint and a light diet on Tuesdays where the household keeps that, physical exertion so the energy has somewhere to go, giving of red lentils or cloth, and, in many families, the recitation associated with Hanuman. I have no evidence to offer you that these change events, and I will not pretend to have any. What they do is give a hot temperament a routine, and that is not nothing.
Red coral is Mars's stone and it should follow a reading of the chart, never a phone call. The elaborate and expensive shanti ceremonies sold for Mangal Dosha are, in my view, sold too readily. If a family wants the ritual for their own peace, that is a fair reason. Fear is not.
The best remedy I know for a hot marriage is unromantic: both people agreeing what they will not say to each other when angry, and keeping to it.
If the marriage question in front of you is about timing and steadiness rather than heat, the companion piece on Saturn in the navamsa chart, the ninth-part chart read for marriage, covers that side, and Jupiter in love covers the values side of the same question.
Questions people ask
We were told the match is impossible because of Mangal Dosha. Is that true?
Almost never on that ground alone. Ask the astrologer specifically whether the dosha stands after the classical cancellations are checked, and what the rest of the matching shows. If the answer is vague, get a second reading before anyone calls anything off.
Does Mangal Dosha mean harm to the spouse?
That is the old formulation and it is the one I most want retired. What the configuration indicates is friction and temper in married life. Treating it as a threat to a person's life has caused a great deal of unnecessary suffering in Indian families.
Both of us are Manglik. Does that cancel it?
Tradition holds that it largely does, and this is one of the oldest and most widely accepted cancellations. It still deserves a proper look at both charts rather than a rule applied from memory.
