Manglik dosha, and what a manglik calculator actually checks

A manglik calculator does one small thing: it finds Mars in your chart and checks whether it sits in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house. If it does, the tool prints "manglik". That is the whole calculation. It takes a fraction of a second, and it is the beginning of the matter rather than the end of it, because the rule has several versions, several recognised exceptions, and a weight in matching that is far smaller than the word has come to carry in families.

I have sat with a great many people who arrived holding a printout with that word on it and a marriage in doubt because of it. So let me set out plainly what tradition says, where the calculators disagree with each other, and what I actually do with it.

What manglik dosha is

Mars is the graha of heat, drive, argument and physical energy. In classical matching, the seventh house and the significations around marriage are read carefully, and Mars placed in certain positions relative to the lagna is held to bring that heat into the marriage: friction, impatience, a temper that arrives quickly and passes quickly, and in the older texts, a caution about the health and wellbeing of the partner.

The houses counted are usually the first, fourth, seventh, eighth and twelfth from the lagna. That is the version most tools use.

Where it stops being simple:

• Many practitioners count the same houses from the Moon as well, and some also from Venus. A chart can be clean from the lagna and flagged from the Moon.
• Some traditions in the south include the second house. Some do not count the first.
• Some count the twelfth only for certain rashis.

So two honest calculators can return two different answers on the same birth data, and neither one is faulty. They are applying different rules. If you have ever been told you are manglik by one site and not by another, that is the reason, and it is worth knowing before anyone in the family treats a web page as a ruling.

The exceptions tradition itself records

This is the part free tools almost always leave out, and it is the part that matters most to the people who come to me frightened.

The classical texts that describe the dosha also describe the conditions under which it does not apply or is considered much reduced. The commonly cited ones:

• Mars in its own rashi or in the rashi where it is strong.
• Mars aspected by or joined with Jupiter, whose nature is held to steady it.
• Both people in the match carrying the same placement, which is the exception families quote most often and the one that has the widest acceptance.
• Certain rashis rising, where the position in question is not treated as a fault.
• The person's age, in some regional traditions, after which the placement is not weighed the same way.

A calculator that prints "manglik: yes" without checking any of these has told you almost nothing. In practice, once the exceptions are applied properly, many of the charts that get flagged are not carrying anything that should worry anybody.

Where it sits in matching

Matching a pair of charts is not one test. Guna Milan scores the compatibility of the two birth nakshatras across several headings and produces a number out of thirty six. The manglik question is checked separately. And then, if the matching is being done seriously, both full charts are read: the seventh house in each, the condition of Venus and Jupiter, the periods each person is running, and what the two charts do to each other.

The number and the manglik flag are the quick screens. The reading is the work. When the quick screen and the reading disagree, tradition is not obliged to follow the quick screen, and no competent astrologer does.

I say this because manglik has been used, for at least two generations, to end matches that had nothing wrong with them. A word printed by a website, repeated by a relative, and treated as a fact. Tradition holds it as a caution about temperament in the marriage house. It is not a diagnosis, it is not a curse, and it does not say what is going to happen in anybody's marriage.

About remedies

People ask what can be done, and it is a fair question. Tradition records observances tied to Mars: the Tuesday fast, offerings and recitation directed at Mars or at Hanuman, and charity of the things associated with Mars. In some communities a ritual marriage is performed before the real one. These are old practices and I am not going to talk anyone out of them.

What I will not do is sell you one. If somebody quotes you a large fee to remove a dosha, and the urgency is coming from them rather than from your situation, walk away. Tradition treats these as observances a person keeps, not as a service someone performs on your behalf for a price. And no observance changes the placement in the chart, which was fixed at your birth. What it can change is how you carry it.

What I would actually do with it

If a chart shows the placement, the questions I ask are: which rashi is that Mars in, and is it comfortable there. What aspects it. Does the same flag appear from the Moon or only from the lagna. What is the condition of the seventh house otherwise. What does the other chart do to it. And what period is each person running now.

At the end of that I can say something useful, which is usually about temperament and about how two people handle heat between them, and which is a conversation about behaviour rather than a prediction about fate. Where a real caution exists I say it plainly. Where there is none I say that too, and I have said it far more often.

Is manglik dosha real?

It is a real classical rule, recorded in the texts and applied for centuries. What it is not is deterministic. Tradition treats it as an indication about the temperature of a marriage, together with the exceptions that reduce or cancel it. Read that way it is useful. Read as a verdict it has done a lot of harm.

Can two manglik people marry each other?

The most widely accepted exception in tradition is exactly that: where both charts carry the placement, it is treated as balanced between them. Families across India have relied on this for generations. Whether the match is a good one still depends on reading both charts properly.

Why does one website say I am manglik and another says I am not?

Because they use different rules. One counts from the lagna only, another counts from the Moon or Venus as well, and they differ on which houses to include and which exceptions to apply.
