Famous people born under Meena rashi, and how to check a moon sign properly

Almost every list of famous Meena rashi people you will find online is wrong. They are lists of people born between roughly 19 February and 20 March, which is the western sun sign Pisces, and that is a different thing from Meena rashi. Meena rashi means the Moon was in Meena at birth, and the Moon changes sign every two and a quarter days, so it has nothing to do with the birth month.

Below are people whose birth dates are a matter of public record and whose Moon can be checked to have been in Meena for the whole of that day, so the answer does not depend on a birth time nobody can verify. It is a short list, and it is short on purpose.

First, what Meena rashi is

Meena is the twelfth sign, a water sign, owned by Jupiter. In Indian practice a person's rashi is their moon sign, which is why a panchang, a rashifal and Guna Milan all work from it. The Moon spends about two and a quarter days in each sign, so a Meena rashi person can be born in any month of the year.

Meena covers three nakshatras: Purva Bhadrapada in its first part, then Uttara Bhadrapada, then Revati to the end of the sign. Tradition associates the sign with imagination, sympathy, an easy inner life and a certain difficulty with hard edges, and Revati in particular with gentleness and with journeys.

The people who genuinely have the Moon in Meena

Srinivasa Ramanujan, the mathematician, born 22 December 1887 in Erode. The Moon was in Meena for the whole of that day, so the placement holds whatever the birth hour was.

Steve Jobs, born 24 February 1955 in San Francisco. His birth time is on public record and the Moon was in Meena throughout that day in any case.

Dev Anand, the actor, born 26 September 1923. Moon in Meena, in Revati, all day.

Zakir Hussain, the tabla player, born 9 March 1951 in Bombay. Moon in Meena all day.

Rahul Dravid, born 11 January 1973 in Indore. Moon in Meena all day.

Rabindranath Tagore, born 7 May 1861 in Calcutta, is very nearly in the same category. The Moon left Meena that evening, so unless he was born in the last hours of the day, which no account suggests, his rashi is Meena.

That is the whole list I am willing to put my name to. I could pad it to twenty by taking birth times off celebrity websites, and every one of those additions would be a guess wearing a decimal point.

Why Albert Einstein is on every other list and not on this one

Einstein was born on 14 March 1879 in Ulm, at 11:30 in the morning, and it is a well documented birth record. It also puts his Sun in Meena, which is why every sun sign list calls him a Pisces.

His Moon was in Vrishchika. So by Indian reckoning he was not Meena rashi at all. He was Vrishchika rashi, in Jyeshtha, and the Moon was nowhere near Meena at any point that day.

That single example is the clearest way I know to show the difference between the two systems. If a list has Einstein on it, the list is not about rashi.

The old version of this page, before I rewrote it, had the same problem and one worse: it listed Daniel Radcliffe, born in July, as Meena rashi. That is not a mistake either system can produce. It is a mistake that comes from writing for a search engine rather than for a reader.

About public birth times

Even where a birth date is certain, birth times in the public domain are often unreliable. They come from interviews, from family recollection decades later, from horoscopes published by newspapers, and sometimes from an astrologer who worked backwards from the life. Where a time is genuinely documented, as with Einstein and with Steve Jobs, it is worth using. Where it is not, the honest position is to say so.

This is why the list above is restricted to people whose Moon stayed in Meena for the entire day. That way the birth time cannot change the answer. Anything more precise than the moon sign, such as the ascendant or the house positions, does need a real birth time, and for most public figures we do not have one.

What a rashi does and does not explain

Nothing on that list is explained by the moon sign.
