Magha Nakshatra

Magha (मघा) is the 10th of the 27 nakshatras of Vedic astrology, spanning 120°00' - 133°20' of the zodiac in Simha. Its lord is Ketu and its deity Pitris. Symbol: Royal throne. It is of rakshasa gana, rat yoni and antya nadi, and its lord's Vimshottari dasha lasts 7 years.

What is Magha nakshatra?
Magha is the 10th of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 120°00' to 133°20' of the zodiac, wholly inside Simha. Its lord is Ketu, its deities are the Pitris, the ancestors, and its symbol is a royal throne.
The name means the mighty or the great one. It is identified with Regulus, the bright star at the heart of the Lion. The image is a throne given by the ancestors: inherited standing and the duty that comes with it.
Which rashi is Magha in, and who is its lord?
Magha lies entirely in Simha, the Sun's sign. Its lord is Ketu, and Ketu's Vimshottari dasha lasts 7 years. Ketu also rules Ashwini and Mula, and all three open a fire sign straight after a water sign, which is why all three are gandamool.
A Moon in Magha at birth means life begins in Ketu's dasha. The balance depends on how far the Moon had moved: near 120°00' almost the full 7 years remain, near 133°20' very little. Shukra's long dasha usually follows in childhood.
What are the four padas of Magha?
The four padas fall in the navamsas of Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna and Karka. The navamsa is the D9, each sign cut into nine, read for marriage and for how strong a graha really is. They begin at 120°00', 123°20', 126°40' and 130°00', all in Simha. Traditional naming gives the syllables Ma, Mi, Mu and Me.
Magha is gandamool. Its gandanta zone is 120°00' to 123°20', the first pada, where the water sign Karka ends and the fire sign Simha begins. Tradition marks a birth with the Moon there for attention. The rule is narrower than it is usually made out to be: it concerns the first pada only, it needs an accurate birth time to apply at all, and it is one factor in a whole chart.
What does tradition say about people born in Magha?
The texts describe Magha natives as proud of family and tradition, generous, fond of honour and comfort, and loyal to elders. The Pitris are said to give reverence for ancestors and a sense of carrying a line forward; the throne gives authority and a wish to be recognised. Ketu as lord adds an inward, detached streak.
Rakshasa gana here means force of will, not cruelty. The shadow tradition notes is pride.
Which careers are traditionally linked with Magha?
Tradition links Magha with positions of authority and inheritance: government and administration, politics, running a family business, history, archives and genealogy, heritage and ceremony, and roles that represent an institution.
For an actual career I read the 10th house, its lord and the dashas.
What does Magha mean for marriage and kundli matching?
Magha is rakshasa gana, rat (mushaka) yoni, male, and antya nadi. In Ashtakoota matching nadi carries 8 points, gana 6 and yoni 4. Rakshasa gana matches best with rakshasa and scores lowest against deva. The rat yoni pairs with Purva Phalguni, the female rat, and is counted an enemy of the cat yoni of Punarvasu and Ashlesha.
Same nadi is the classical concern: two antya nadi Moons give nadi dosha, with exceptions in the texts. The marriage itself is read from the 7th house, its lord, Shukra and the dashas.
What does Magha not tell you?
Magha gets both flattery and fear: the royal image is overplayed, and so is the gandamool label. Neither tells you much alone. Whether someone ends up with authority depends on the Sun, the 10th house and the dashas; whether the ancestral theme is a gift or a weight is read from the 9th house. With Magha the pada matters more than usual, since only the first is gandamool, and the pada is fixed by the birth time to within minutes. Everyone born in the same window shares the nakshatra and lives a different life. The rest comes from the whole chart.
