Mithuna Rashi (Gemini)
Also in: हिन्दी
Mithuna (Gemini, मिथुन) is the 3rd of the twelve rashis of Vedic astrology and spans 60°00' to 90°00' of the zodiac. Dual air sign of exchange, duality and communication. Its lord is Budha, and it holds the nakshatras Mrigashira, Ardra and Punarvasu.

What is Mithuna rashi?
Mithuna is the 3rd of the twelve rashis and spans 60°00' to 90°00' of the sidereal zodiac. Its English name is Gemini, its lord is Budha, its element is air and its quality is dual (dvisvabhava). The name means a pair, and its symbol is a couple: in the classical image a man holding a mace and a woman holding a veena.
Who rules Mithuna and what kind of sign is it?
Budha rules Mithuna, and Kanya as well. Budha is the graha of speech, reasoning, trade and learning, so Mithuna is read as the sign where the mind turns outwards: talking, comparing, bargaining, writing. As a dual sign it closes a season and holds two modes at once, which the texts read as adaptability. It is counted a male sign, and of the body it governs the arms and shoulders.
Which nakshatras fall in Mithuna?
Three. Padas 3 and 4 of Mrigashira (60°00' to 66°40'), all four padas of Ardra (66°40' to 80°00') and padas 1 to 3 of Punarvasu (80°00' to 90°00'). Mrigashira belongs to Mangala, Ardra to Rahu and Punarvasu to Guru, so a Moon in Mithuna can begin life in any of three quite different dashas, depending on where in the sign it sits.
Which grahas are exalted or debilitated in Mithuna?
None, in the system this site uses. Mithuna is a sign of no exaltation and no debilitation, and none has its mooltrikona here. Some traditions place Rahu's exaltation in Mithuna; Parashara places it in Vrishabha, with its debilitation in Vrishchika, and that is the view I follow and the one these pages print.
What does tradition say about a Mithuna Moon or ascendant?
The texts describe a Mithuna Moon as quick, talkative, curious and witty, fond of company, music and learning several things at once. Tradition holds that a Mithuna ascendant is youthful in manner, clever with the hands and with words, and restless when bored. These are classical descriptions, not a forecast: the aspects on the Moon and the condition of the lagna lord change the picture a great deal.
Which careers are linked with Mithuna?
Budha and an air sign point the traditional lists towards work done with words, numbers and people: writing, teaching, journalism, translation, accounts, trade, sales, communication and travel. A career itself is read from the 10th house, its lord and the dasha running, not from the sign the Moon or the ascendant falls in.
What does Mithuna mean for marriage?
For a Mithuna ascendant the 7th house is Dhanu, Guru's sign, and tradition reads a partner who is steadier and more principled than the native. In Ashtakoota matching the Moon sign enters through bhakoot (7 points) and graha maitri (5 points). Neither settles a marriage. I read it from the 7th house, its lord, Shukra and the dashas of both people.
Is Mithuna rashi the same as Gemini?
Not quite. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons, and Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. The two are now about 24 degrees apart, the Vedic sign sitting about 24 degrees behind, so most people born in Gemini's Western dates have the Sun in Vrishabha, not Mithuna. And when someone in India says "my rashi is Mithuna", they usually mean the Moon sign.
What does your rashi not tell you?
Mithuna is shared by three nakshatras with three different lords, so the sign alone does not even fix the first dasha of a life. It does not tell you that you are fickle or a good talker. Budha's own condition, the house Mithuna occupies in your chart and the dashas you are running say far more. The Moon crosses the sign in about two and a half days, so the birth time decides whether you are Mithuna at all, and I read it only as one factor in the whole chart.
