What is Punarvasu nakshatra?

Punarvasu is the 7th of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 80°00' to 93°20' of the zodiac, across Mithuna and Karka. Its lord is Guru, its deity Aditi, the boundless mother of the gods, and its symbol is a quiver of arrows. The name means 'good again' or 'the return of the light', and the nakshatra follows Ardra's storm as the clearing after it. It is identified with Castor and Pollux, the two bright heads of the Twins.

Which rashi is Punarvasu in, and who is its lord?

Punarvasu crosses a sign boundary: padas 1 to 3 lie in Mithuna, pada 4 in Karka, the sign where Guru is exalted. Its lord is Guru, and its lord's Vimshottari dasha lasts 16 years. Guru also rules Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada, and each of the three ends with its last pada in the next sign.

A Moon in Punarvasu at birth means life begins in Guru's dasha, with a balance set by how far the Moon had travelled through the nakshatra: most of the sixteen years early on, a year or so at the end.

What are the four padas of Punarvasu?

Each pada spans 3°20'. The four padas fall in the navamsas of Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna and Karka. The navamsa (D9) is the chart in which each pada becomes a sign, read for marriage and for the deeper strength of a graha. Padas 1, 2 and 3 sit in Mithuna (80°00' to 90°00') and pada 4 in Karka (90°00' to 93°20'). Both the third pada (Mithuna in Mithuna) and the fourth (Karka in Karka) are vargottama, which is unusual: two of the four quarters fall in the same sign in both charts. Punarvasu is not a gandamool nakshatra.

What does tradition say about people born in Punarvasu?

The texts describe Punarvasu natives as good-natured, generous and resilient, people who come back after a setback. Varahamihira's verse calls them self-controlled, happy, of good conduct and content with little. Tradition holds that Aditi gives breadth of heart and a mothering instinct, and the quiver, arrows returned home, a gift for starting over. Deva gana is said to give a gentle temper, and Guru as lord adds faith, learning and a wish to teach.

Which careers are traditionally linked with Punarvasu?

Tradition links Punarvasu with teaching, counselling and religious work, publishing and writing, travel and hospitality, and with any role that restores what was lost, from rehabilitation to repair. These are classical associations, not a forecast. Work is read from the 10th house, its lord and the running dasha; the birth nakshatra does not decide it.

What does Punarvasu mean for marriage and kundli matching?

In Ashtakoota matching Punarvasu counts as deva gana, cat yoni and Aadi nadi. Deva agrees fully with deva, is accepted with manushya and scores lowest with rakshasa. In the 36-point scheme nadi carries 8, gana 6 and yoni 4. Two Aadi nadi Moons is the classical concern, nadi dosha, and the texts list exceptions to it.

Matching only scores two Moons. I read the marriage itself from the 7th house, its lord, Shukra and the dashas of both people.

Which syllables belong to Punarvasu?

The traditional syllables for the four padas are Ke, Ko, Ha and Hi, in order. A name is often begun with the syllable of the Moon's pada.

What does Punarvasu not tell you?

The nakshatra alone does not settle the sign: a Moon in its last pada is a Karka Moon, in the first three a Mithuna Moon, and those are read very differently. It does not tell you where Guru sits or how strong it is, the ascendant, or the dasha running now. Its reputation as a nakshatra of renewal describes a tendency, not an assurance that every loss comes back. Two people with a Punarvasu Moon share one factor among hundreds.
