What is Pushya nakshatra?

Pushya is the 8th of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 93°20' to 106°40' of the zodiac, wholly inside Karka. Its lord is Shani, its deity is Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods, and its symbol is a cow's udder, sometimes drawn as a lotus.

The name means nourishment; its other name, Tishya, means auspicious. Its stars are the faint ones in the body of the Crab. On a Thursday or Sunday it gives the Guru Pushya and Ravi Pushya yogas of muhurta.

Which rashi is Pushya in, and who is its lord?

Pushya lies entirely in Karka, the Moon's own sign, so every pada of it gives a Karka Moon. Its lord is Shani, and Shani's Vimshottari dasha lasts 19 years, the second longest of the nine. Shani also rules Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada.

If the Moon was in Pushya at your birth, your life began in Shani's dasha. How much of the 19 years was left depends on how far the Moon had travelled through the nakshatra: a Moon near 93°20' starts you with nearly all of it, a Moon near 106°40' with very little.

What are the four padas of Pushya?

Each pada is a quarter of 3°20'. The four padas fall in the navamsas of Simha, Kanya, Tula and Vrishchika. The navamsa is the D9 chart, read for marriage and a graha's real strength.

All four padas sit in Karka, beginning at 93°20', 96°40', 100°00' and 103°20', so the rashi does not change inside Pushya; only the navamsa does. Guru's classical exaltation point, 5 degrees of Karka, falls in the first pada. Traditional naming gives the syllables Hu, He, Ho and Da to the four padas.

What does tradition say about people born in Pushya?

The texts describe Pushya natives as steady, dutiful and protective, people who look after others the way the udder of the symbol feeds a calf. Brihaspati as deity is said to give respect for learning, faith and good counsel; Shani as lord adds patience, restraint and a willingness to carry responsibility. Deva gana places it among the gentler temperaments.

The shadow tradition mentions is Shani's: caution that hardens into rigidity, care that turns into worry.

Which careers are traditionally linked with Pushya?

Tradition links Pushya with work that feeds, teaches or keeps order: teaching and priestly work, counselling, food and dairy, nursing and caregiving, administration, law, and institutions built to last.

Work itself is decided by the 10th house, its lord and the running dasha; the nakshatra describes the worker, not the job.

What does Pushya mean for marriage and kundli matching?

For matching, Pushya is deva gana, sheep (mesha) yoni, male, and madhya nadi. In Ashtakoota matching nadi carries 8 points, gana 6 and yoni 4. Deva gana sits best with deva, comfortably with manushya, and scores lowest against rakshasa. The sheep yoni pairs with Krittika, the female sheep; the monkey yoni is its enemy.

Same nadi is the classical concern: two madhya nadi Moons give what is called nadi dosha, and the texts themselves list exceptions. Pushya is usually left out of wedding muhurta, but that is about the date, not about who may marry a Pushya native. Matching scores two Moons; the marriage itself I read from the 7th house, its lord, Shukra and the dashas.

What does Pushya not tell you?

Pushya's good name is the trap. Being born in the nakshatra most praised for beginnings does not make a life easy, and a Moon here can still be weak by house, aspect or conjunction: a Pushya Moon in the 8th house reads very differently from one in the 10th. The Moon crosses Pushya in about a day, so the birth time decides whether you are Pushya, Punarvasu or Ashlesha, and everyone born in that window shares it while living a different life. Career, partner and health come from the whole chart.
