The seventh lord, and what it can honestly tell you about your spouse

The seventh lord shows the arena of your life in which partnership happens and the general temperament of that partnership. It does not give you your spouse's face, profession, initial, or standing in the world, and the pages that promise those things are describing a precision that the tradition does not have.

I am putting the limit first because that is the part people are not told. Everything below is the useful half, and it is genuinely useful.

What the seventh lord is

Each of the twelve houses has a rashi sitting on it, and every rashi has a ruling graha. Whichever graha rules the rashi on your seventh house is your seventh lord. It is not a fixed graha, it depends on your ascendant, and it is the single most important thing in a marriage reading after the seventh house itself.

The question then is where that lord has gone in your chart. Tradition treats a house lord as carrying its house's affairs to wherever it sits. So the seventh lord tells you where in your life partnership is actually being conducted.

Where it sits, and what tradition reads from it

These are the classical indications, compressed. Every one of them is what tradition reads from the placement, which is a direction of travel rather than a description of a real person you have not met yet.

First house. Tradition reads partnership as central to how you see yourself, with a strong pull towards pairing and a match found close to your own circle.

Second house. Tradition reads the marriage as bound up with family and with money, and as a partner drawn closely into the household.

Third house. Tradition reads partnership as met through the ordinary daily circle: siblings, neighbours, colleagues, short journeys. Often informal in how it begins.

Fourth house. Tradition reads the marriage as settling into home and property, and often as a match from the same place or the same background.

Fifth house. Tradition reads affection and romance as leading, which is why this is one of the placements associated with a marriage that grows out of a relationship rather than an introduction.

Sixth house. Tradition treats this as the harder placement, with friction, obligation and service in the partnership, and also reads it as meeting through work. It is heavily over-read on the internet, and I would not conclude anything from it alone.

Seventh house. The lord in its own house, which tradition reads as partnership being straightforward in the chart's own terms.

Eighth house. Tradition reads the joint life as the dominant theme: shared money, the in-laws' resources, matters kept private. It asks for care here, and again it is routinely turned into something more frightening than the texts support.

Ninth house. Tradition reads partnership as coming from a different community, region or country, or as met through study, teaching or travel, and as a marriage that widens the life.

Tenth house. Tradition ties partnership to work and public standing: a partner met through the career, or a marriage that is visible in the world.

Eleventh house. Tradition reads marriage here as a wish arriving, often through friends or a wider network.

Twelfth house. Tradition reads distance into this one: a partner from far away, a marriage lived apart from the public eye, or long stretches spent in different cities.

Two cautions. The condition of that lord matters as much as its house: a strong lord in the sixth beats a weak lord in the fifth most days. And no single placement runs a chart. Anything in the paragraphs above can be modified out of recognition by the rest of the picture.

About the spouse's public image

The old version of this page promised that the seventh lord reveals your spouse's standing in the world, in a named year. I have taken that claim out, because it is not something a chart can deliver.

Here is what is real underneath it. The seventh house is the house of what faces you, and it does carry your dealings with the public. So a seventh lord tied to the tenth house does often show a partnership that is visible: a partner with a public role, or a marriage that becomes part of your standing. That is a tendency in the chart and it is a fair thing to say.

What is not fair is turning it into a portrait. I cannot tell you your spouse's job title from your chart, and neither can anyone else. The tradition of reading a spouse's appearance, complexion, direction and profession from the seventh lord does exist in the old texts. The trouble with it is visible in the descriptions themselves: they are broad enough to fit most people, and a description that fits most people is going to look accurate whenever it is checked after the wedding rather than before it.

What is worth doing instead

Read the seventh lord for the shape of partnership you are heading into, and read Venus for what you are drawn to. Then, if timing is the actual question, read the running period and the transits over the seventh house and its lord. That combination tells you something you can plan around, which a description of a stranger's face never could.

Can the seventh lord tell me who I will marry?

No. It indicates where partnership happens in your life and what it is likely to feel like. Naming a person, a profession or an appearance is beyond what the tradition can do reliably, whatever a website claims.

Is the seventh lord in the sixth or eighth house bad for marriage?

Tradition asks for care with both, mainly around friction and around shared money. They are not verdicts. Both placements turn up in long and settled marriages, and what decides a reading of either one is the condition of the lord and the rest of the chart.

Which matters more, the seventh house or the seventh lord?
