The 7th lord in the 10th house, career and the spouse question
When the lord of the 7th house sits in the 10th house, the tradition reads it as partnership and public life being wired together. Marriage, business partners and the way you deal with other people show up inside your work, and your work shows up inside your marriage. That is the whole of the classical indication, and it is a tendency, not an event.
What it does not do is describe what your husband or wife will look like. Pages that promise a spouse's face, height or complexion from this one placement are selling something the chart does not carry. I will come to that below, because it is the most common reason people search for this placement, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a polite one.
What the two houses actually cover
The 7th house is the house of union. Marriage sits there, but so does every other one-to-one arrangement: a business partner, a contract, a counterparty, an open opponent. Older texts call it the house of the other person, the one standing across from you. It is the mirror of the 1st house, which is you.
The 10th house is the house of action and standing. Work, position, what you are known for, the part of your life that is visible to people who have never met you.
So the lord of the 7th moving into the 10th carries the affairs of union into the field of work and reputation. That is the sentence. Everything else in this article is what that sentence means in a real life.
The ordinary ways it shows up
Across charts, this placement tends to express itself in a few recognisable ways. None of them is guaranteed, and in many charts it is simply quiet.
Meeting through work. Introductions tend to come through professional circles rather than family circles. Colleagues, clients, a course, a workplace, a shared project. In arranged-marriage families this often reads as the match arriving through a professional contact rather than a relative.
A partner with visible standing. The spouse tends to have their own work identity that matters to them, and often to the household. In many of these charts the partner is not a background figure.
Work that is partnership-shaped. Consulting, agency work, a family business run with a partner, sales, anything where the income depends on a relationship with a specific other person rather than on a salary. The 7th and 10th connecting is one of the standard signatures for that.
Married life and work overlapping. This is the double edge. The same wiring that brings a partner in through work also means work pressure lands on the marriage and marital pressure lands on the work. That is worth knowing in advance, because it is manageable when you can see it.
Which planet is the 7th lord changes everything
This is where most of the internet goes wrong. "7th lord in the 10th" is not one placement. It is twelve different placements, because the 7th lord is a different planet for each rising sign, and a planet reads according to its own nature and condition.
For Aries rising the 7th lord is Venus. For Taurus rising it is Mars. For Gemini rising, Jupiter. For Cancer rising, Saturn. Venus in the 10th and Saturn in the 10th are not the same story even though both are correctly called "the 7th lord in the 10th house".
Then the condition of that planet matters: which sign it is in, whether it is with another planet, what aspects reach it, whether it is close to the Sun, which nakshatra it occupies. A well-placed 7th lord in the 10th and an afflicted one produce very different lives, and a reading that skips this step is not a reading.
What about the spouse's standing and public image
Tradition does allow you to look at the 7th house and its lord to say something general about the partner's environment: whether their life leans towards public work or private work, whether their family background is likely to be settled or striving, whether they are likely to earn independently. With the 7th lord in the 10th, the honest general statement is that the partner's work and social standing tend to be a significant feature of the marriage.
That is as far as I go, and it is as far as the technique honestly reaches.
I do not read a spouse's appearance from a chart, and I do not put a year on their public image. Two reasons. First, physical description from a chart depends on an exact birth time and on rules that different classical sources state differently, and there is no way to check whether the resulting description was right until after the fact, by which point the person is already married. Second, a description that cannot be checked can still be acted on. Once someone is told their spouse will be fair, or tall, or from a particular part of the country, that sits in their mind while they are making one of the larger decisions of their life, and nothing in the technique earns the right to put it there.
If you want to know what your chart indicates about marriage, the useful questions are about timing, about the shape of the partnership, and about what tends to go wrong and how you would recognise it early. Those are answerable. A face is not.
When it becomes active
A placement in a birth chart is a standing tendency. It tends to become noticeable when the mahadasha of the 7th lord runs, or when the mahadasha of a planet connected to it runs, and it is often visible around the years when Jupiter transits the 7th house or the house the 7th lord occupies.
That is the honest mechanism, and it gives windows rather than dates. If you want the reasoning laid out properly, finding a likely age for marriage goes through it in full.
What to do with this
If this is your placement, the practical reading is short. Tradition reads your work and your marriage as sitting in the same room rather than in separate ones. Choose a partner who can live with that, and protect some part of the week that has nothing to do with either. If you go into business with your spouse, put the arrangement in writing the way you would with a stranger. That is not cynicism, it is the 7th house being read as it was meant to be read: as a house of contracts.
If you want your own chart looked at rather than a general placement explained, that is what a reading is for.
Questions people ask
Does the 7th lord in the 10th house mean a love marriage?
Not by itself. It suggests the meeting is likely to come through the work or public side of life rather than through family, which in practice often ends up looking like a love marriage or a self-arranged one. But the 5th house, the 9th house and the family's own circumstances all sit in that decision, and plenty of charts with this placement have ordinary arranged marriages.
Can this placement tell me my husband's appearance?
No. Some classical sources give physical descriptions from the sign and planet involved, but they disagree with each other, they need a birth time accurate to the minute, and they cannot be checked in advance. I do not offer appearance readings, and I would treat any site that does with caution.
Is the 7th lord in the 10th house bad for marriage?
No placement is bad on its own. This one raises the amount of contact between work and married life, which some couples find energising and others find exhausting. Whether it goes well depends on the condition of the planet, on the rest of the chart, and on two people's actual conduct. Tradition indicates a tendency. It does not decide the outcome.
