A yoga is a named combination of planets in a kundli that the tradition associates with a particular kind of result. Some of them are commonly said to come into effect after marriage, and families notice this: a man's work steadies, a woman's standing rises, money that never arrived starts arriving. The chart does show something real here. What it shows is timing, and confusing timing with cause is where most of the writing on this subject goes wrong.

Let me take that apart properly, because it is a genuinely interesting piece of the tradition and it is usually explained badly.

What a yoga is

Planets do not act alone. When two or more of them sit in a particular relationship, in particular houses, with particular rulerships, the classical texts give that arrangement a name and a description. Gaja Kesari yoga is Jupiter placed in an angle from the Moon, and is associated with intelligence, good judgement and steady reputation. The various Raj yogas are formed when the rulers of certain houses combine, and are associated with authority and rise in position. Two things follow. A yoga is present in a chart from birth, or it is not. Nothing forms one later. And a yoga in the chart is a capacity, not an event. It sits there, and it expresses itself when the periods running at that time belong to the planets that make it up.

Why so much appears to start at marriage

Most people in India marry somewhere between the middle twenties and the middle thirties. That stretch is also when a great many charts move from one long planetary period into the next, because of how the periods are laid out from the Moon's position at birth. The caution that belongs with all of this

Named yogas are the most oversold material in astrology. Almost every chart contains a few impressive sounding ones, because there are so many named combinations that some will land by chance. A practitioner who reads you a list of your yogas without telling you which ones are actually strong, which are cancelled by other placements, and which periods would express them, is reading you a horoscope, not your chart.
