Ketu in the 7th house, read honestly

Ketu in the 7th house is read, in the tradition, as a certain distance inside marriage. Not the absence of marriage, and not a broken one. A person with this placement often does not chase, does not hold on tightly, and keeps a private room in themselves that the partner is not fully let into.

What it does not do is tell you what your husband or wife will look like. That is the question these pages were built to catch, and it is the one part of the subject that has no honest answer.

What Ketu is

Ketu is not a planet in the sense the Sun and the Moon are. It is one of the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's, the southern one, and it is always exactly opposite Rahu. The tradition calls the pair shadow grahas and gives them real weight in a kundli even though there is nothing there to see.

The signification of Ketu is letting go. What Rahu grabs at, Ketu has already had and set down. It carries a sense of a matter finished, of skill without appetite, and of a leaning towards the inward or the spiritual side of life. Applied to any house, it does not empty the house. It removes the hunger from it.

There is a structural fact worth knowing before anything else. If Ketu is in your 7th, Rahu is in your 1st. The reading is never only about the partner. It is about a person with a strong pull towards their own becoming and a weaker pull towards being one of two. Half of what looks like a marriage difficulty in these charts is the 1st house end of the axis, not the 7th.

What the placement is actually read for

Self-sufficiency in relationships. Tradition reads this placement as self-sufficiency inside a relationship rather than appetite for one. That can be a strength in a difficult year and an awkwardness in an ordinary one, because a partner can end up feeling unneeded.

A partner who is somewhat apart. Tradition connects this placement with a spouse who is independent, inward, involved in something technical or devotional, or from a background at some distance from your own, whether by place, language or community.

A sense of having met before. People with this placement sometimes describe recognising a partner rather than discovering them. I mention it because people bring it up, not because I can put any weight on it. I make no claim about where the feeling comes from.

Drift rather than quarrel. Where this placement causes trouble, it is usually not through fighting. It is through two people quietly stopping the effort of explaining themselves.

The old texts are blunter than this. Some of them speak of discontent in marriage and of a spouse who is not held in affection. I report that because it is what the tradition says, but I read it with the context in mind. Those verses were written for a society where marriage was arranged early, ended almost never, and asked nothing of the inner life. A verse about discontent, written then, describes something a modern couple can talk about and work with. It is not a sentence passed on your marriage.

Why the appearance question has no honest answer

Where the classical material describes a partner physically, it works from the sign on the 7th house, the planet ruling that sign, and any planet sitting in the 7th. Even there the descriptions are broad enough to fit a great many people.

Ketu is a harder case still, because the tradition gives it no body of its own. It is a shadow. There is no settled description language for it, and the lists you find online of a slim, ethereal, faraway looking spouse were written by people filling a page, not reading a chart.

I can tell you a good deal about a marriage from a kundli: whether it comes early or late, whether the strain sits in temperament or in money or in the two households, and which years are live for the question. I cannot tell you a face, and neither can anyone else. If you would like the parts that can be read looked at properly, that is what the readings and sittings are for.

What actually helps, if this is your chart

Very little of it is astrological, which is usually the case with useful advice.

Say things out loud earlier than feels necessary. This placement does not make people cold, but it makes them quiet, and quiet gets read as indifference by the person sitting across the table.

Do not confuse not needing someone with not wanting them. The tradition is describing a lack of hunger, not a lack of love, and the difference has to be shown rather than assumed.

Take the marriage decision on the ordinary grounds: character, household, temperament, the way the person treats people who cannot do anything for them. A chart weighs the pattern. It does not choose.

And weigh the whole chart before you take any of this seriously. Where the lord of the 7th sits, whether Venus is strong, what Saturn and Mars touch, and which period is running in your chart all count for more than one shadow point. FAQ

Is Ketu in the 7th house a dosha?

Some astrologers label it as a fault in the marriage house, and I think that is heavier than the evidence supports. It is a placement with a known tendency towards distance. Plenty of people carry it through long, ordinary, affectionate marriages. Treat a page that tells you otherwise, and then offers a remedy at a price, with the suspicion it deserves.

Does Ketu in the 7th mean marriage will be delayed or will not happen?

No. Timing is read from the condition of the 7th house and its lord and from the periods running in your chart, not from Ketu alone. Marriage in these charts is common. What is more often reported is that it takes a while for the person to feel that they want it.

Does it say anything about my spouse at all?

It suggests the kind of relationship you tend to build, and it may point towards a partner who is independent or comes from some distance. Anything more precise than that, including looks, profession or a name, is invention.
