Marriage is read from the seventh house of the kundli, the house tradition calls Yuvati, the house of union. If nothing sits in your seventh house, that is not a sign that marriage is missing from the chart. It is the most ordinary situation there is.

Two questions arrive together. Someone has downloaded a chart, counted the houses, found the seventh one bare, and read on some website that an empty seventh house means a late marriage or no marriage at all. That reading is wrong, and it is wrong for a reason anyone can check in one minute.

Why the seventh house carries marriage

The seventh house sits directly opposite the first. The first house is you: your body, your temperament, the way you arrive in a room. The seventh is what stands facing you. Everything in a chart that involves another person meeting you as an equal lands there.

That is why the seventh house is not only marriage. Tradition reads it for business partnership, for contracts, for dealings with the public, and for open opponents, the ones who face you rather than work behind you. All of these are the same shape: a second party, across a table, in an agreement with you. Marriage is the most personal version of that shape, which is why it became the house's headline.

So the first thing the seventh house indicates is not who you marry. It is how you partner: whether you move towards other people easily or hold back, whether you need agreement to feel settled, how you behave when someone is standing opposite you.

The houses that sit around it

The seventh does most of the work, but marriage is not read from a single house. In practice I look at a small group.

The second house is family in the everyday sense, the household you eat with and speak to. After marriage, that household changes shape, and the second house shows how you sit inside it.

A graha like Venus indicates a theme wherever it sits. So Venus matters in a marriage reading even if it is nowhere near the seventh house.

An empty seventh house is the common case

Here is the minute of arithmetic. A kundli has twelve houses. It has nine grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Nine things cannot fill twelve places. Every chart ever cast has at least three empty houses, and most have five or six, because grahas cluster rather than spread evenly.

An empty house is not a house that is switched off. It is a house whose story is told from elsewhere. If your seventh house is empty, the seventh house of your chart is still fully alive; you simply read it through its lord instead of through a tenant.

I would go further. A crowded seventh house is often the harder chart to read, not the easier one, because several grahas of different natures are pulling one area of life in different directions at once.

What is actually read when the seventh is empty

Four things, in this order.

The seventh lord. Every house is ruled by a rashi, and every rashi has a lord. Whichever graha rules the rashi on your seventh house is your seventh lord, and where that graha sits is where your partnership life is actually being conducted. A seventh lord in the tenth ties partnership to work and public life. A seventh lord in the twelfth points to distance, foreign places, or a private life kept apart from the world. That single placement usually tells me more than any tenant in the seventh would have, and it is worth reading properly: the seventh lord, house by house.

The condition of that lord. Is it in a rashi it is comfortable in. Is it hemmed in by difficult company. Is it strong enough to deliver what it indicates. A well placed seventh lord in an empty seventh house chart is a good marriage indication, plainly.

What aspects the seventh house. Grahas cast their gaze across the chart. A house with no tenant may still be watched by Jupiter or pressed by Saturn, and that gaze counts.

Venus, and then timing. Once the picture is clear, timing is read through the running mahadasha and the transits of the slow grahas. Timing is a separate craft and it is where most of the honest work in a marriage reading sits.

What the seventh house will not tell you

It will not name a person. It will not give you a face, a city, a profession or a date you can circle. Anyone selling you that is selling you something else.

What a careful reading of the seventh house can do is describe the shape of partnership you are built for, the friction you are likely to meet, and the periods when the chart is more open to it.
