Ashtama Shani for Simha rashi, and what it does and does not say about health

Saturn entered Pisces on 30 March 2025 and stays there until 3 June 2027. Pisces is the 8th sign from Simha, so if your moon sign is Simha you are in what tradition calls ashtama shani, Saturn in the 8th, for that whole stretch.

What that means in practice is far less dramatic than the internet makes it. Tradition reads Saturn in the 8th as a period of lower reserves: less stamina than usual, old complaints resurfacing, a body that asks to be looked after rather than pushed. It is a description of a tendency. It is not a diagnosis, it does not predict an illness, and no astrologer, including me, can tell you from a chart what is happening inside your body. A doctor can. That is the correct order of things and I want it said at the top rather than buried at the bottom.

Nothing special happens in March 2026

A lot of what circulates about this transit is pegged to particular months, and March 2026 is one of the dates doing the rounds. Saturn does not move in March 2026. It is in Pisces from March 2025 straight through to June 2027, so there is no ingress, no beginning, no crossing to brace for.

One smaller thing is genuinely true of that stretch of the year, and it is the likely source of the date. The Sun passes through Pisces from about the middle of March to the middle of April, which puts the Sun, the lord of Simha itself, in the same 8th house as Saturn for those weeks. Tradition would call those weeks low rather than dangerous. Take that for what it is worth, which is a hint to not overcommit in that window, not a warning.

Saturn does move in one respect during 2026: it turns retrograde on 27 July and direct again on 11 December. Retrograde does not mean reversal of fortune. It means the planet appears to move backwards from where we stand, and older texts read those months as a time when matters already in hand get revisited rather than new ones starting.

There is a second live factor that most of this content misses. Ketu has been sitting on Simha itself since May 2025, and moves to Karka in the first week of December 2026. Tradition connects Ketu on the moon sign with detachment and a low appetite, which is the same flat, under-powered picture this whole page is describing, arriving from a different direction. It is worth knowing mainly so that you do not read ordinary tiredness as something medical, and do not read something medical as ordinary tiredness.

What ashtama shani actually is

Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross a sign. When it crosses the 8th sign from your moon sign, that period gets the name ashtama shani. It is one of the three Saturn phases tradition marks out. The other two are Sade Sati, the seven and a half years when Saturn passes through the sign before your moon sign, your moon sign, and the one after it, and the two and a half years when Saturn crosses the 4th sign from your moon, which older texts treat much the same way.

Simha is not in Sade Sati. Sade Sati right now belongs to Kumbha, Meena and Mesha. If someone has told you that Simha is in Sade Sati in 2026, they are working from the wrong sign. It is a common enough mistake because both phases are Saturn phases and both get talked about in the same frightened tone.

The 8th house in Vedic astrology governs longevity, the hidden, the inherited, upheaval, surgery, and other people's money. Saturn's nature there is slowing rather than striking. That is why tradition frames it as depletion instead of catastrophe: less energy, delayed recovery, things that take longer than you expected them to take.

What tradition connects with this period

Set out honestly, without the fear:

  • Tiredness that does not clear with one good night of sleep, and a lower tolerance for long hours.
  • Old, known complaints returning to attention rather than new mysterious ones. Backs, knees, teeth, digestion, anything chronic.
  • A tendency to postpone dealing with the body because there is always something more urgent.
  • Sleep going irregular, and worry taking the shape of a physical symptom.
  • Slower recovery from ordinary illnesses and from ordinary overwork.

Notice what is not on that list. Nothing about accidents, nothing about surgery, nothing about the length of anyone's life. Older texts do connect the 8th house with those subjects, and every honest astrologer has watched a Saturn transit coincide with a difficult year for someone. But the same transit is running for one twelfth of everybody alive, which in India alone is more than a hundred million people. A factor shared by that many people cannot be the cause of one person's illness. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

What is actually worth doing

Ordinary things, done on purpose. Tradition and common sense point the same way here, which is usually a sign the tradition is describing something real.

Get the checks done that you have been putting off. If there is a test your doctor mentioned last year, this is the year to stop postponing it. That is the one piece of advice in this whole article I would give with any force, and it does not depend on astrology being true.

Protect sleep before anything else. Saturn's whole method is depletion by slow accumulation, and sleep is the thing that restores it.

Do not add commitments in the low weeks. For Simha that is mid March to mid April, when the Sun joins Saturn in the 8th, and to a lesser degree the retrograde months from late July to December.

Take the disciplines if they help you. Tradition prescribes fasting or a simple meal on Saturdays, giving to people who work with their hands, the Hanuman Chalisa, and black sesame or oil given in charity. I have watched these steady people for twenty five years. What they do is impose a rhythm and turn worry into an action. I would not tell you they alter the sky, and I would think less of an astrologer who did.

Do not buy a remedy under pressure. If anyone quotes you a price to remove ashtama shani, walk away. The transit ends on 3 June 2027 whether or not anybody pays.

If you want the picture read against your own chart rather than against the sign alone, the 6th and 8th houses of your kundli and the running mahadasha matter far more than the transit does. That is what a focused reading covers. The companion piece to this one, on Simha rashi and career under Rahu, takes the same period from the work side.

Questions people ask

How long does ashtama shani last for Simha rashi? From 30 March 2025 to 3 June 2027, which is when Saturn leaves Pisces for Aries. After that Saturn is in the 9th from Simha, which tradition treats as a much easier position. There is no partial exit and no extension.

Does ashtama shani mean I will fall ill? No. Tradition reads it as a period of lower reserves, which is a tendency, not an event, and it is running for everyone with a Simha moon sign at the same time. Use it as a reason to get routine checks done and to sleep properly. Do not use it as a reason to be frightened, and never use it in place of seeing a doctor about a symptom.

Is my Simha sun sign the same as my Simha rashi? Usually not. Rashi in Vedic astrology means the moon sign, the sign the Moon occupied at your birth, and it needs a date and place rather than just a birthday. The Simha sun sign from a newspaper column is a different measurement in a different zodiac. A free kundli will tell you your actual moon sign, and this article only applies if that sign is Simha.
